This paper concerns the prevalence of intimate partner violence in 15 State capital cities and the Federal District of Brazil. A population-based multi-stage survey in 2002/2003 involved 6,760 15-69-year-old women (respondents). Using the Conflict Tactics Scales--Form R, the overall prevalence of psychological aggression and "minor" and severe physical abuse within couples was 78.3%, 21.5%, and 12.9%, respectively. Prevalence rates varied distinctively between cities. For instance, total physical abuse ranged from 13.2% to 34.8%. On the whole, prevalence was higher in the North and Northeast c

The influence of husband's alcohol consumption and that of women's empowerment has been largely studied separately in relation to the intimate partner violence (IPV) faced by women, which has hindered a nuanced understanding of gender-based violence in India. This study aimed to understand how husbands' alcohol consumption shapes the relationship between women's empowerment and violence among Indian couples. Data from the 2015-16 National Family Health Survey (NFHS) were used in this study. A composite women's empowerment index was constructed and its association with husbands' drunkenness and…

BACKGROUND: Violence against women continues to be a challenge in many countries. Many women suffer physical violence at the hands of their intimate partners and sometimes this leads to their deaths. This study aimed to examine the multilevel determinants of physical violence among ever-partnered women in South Africa.
METHODS: We used data from the 2016 South Africa Demographic and Health Survey. The study has a weighted sample size of 4169 ever-partnered women aged 18-49 years, based on the domestic violence module. We included univariate, bivariate and multilevel logistic regression analys

BACKGROUND: Violence and trauma exposure among children remain critical public health issues, particularly in under-resourced regions such as the Vhembe district, South Africa. Although much is known about the prevalence of child abuse, limited research explores children’s lived experiences and coping mechanisms from their own perspectives. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of children exposed to trauma and violence in the Vhembe district, focusing on their emotional responses, coping strategies, and perceived sources of support. METHODS: A qualitative research desig

Intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual violence (SV) are drivers of women's morbidity and mortality in urban environments yet remain among the most underreported crimes in the USA. We conducted 26 in-depth interviews with women who experienced past-year IPV or SV, to explore structural and community influences on police contact in Baltimore, MD. Results indicate that gender-based and race-based inequities intersected at the structural and community levels to discourage women from police contact following IPV/SV. Structural influences on police reporting included police discriminatory polic

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner physical violence increases women's risk for negative health outcomes and is an important public health concern. The purpose of the present study was to determine 1) the proportion of girls (≤18 years) and women (>18 years) who experienced physical violence by a sexual partner, and 2) factors (including self-reported HIV infection) associated with girls and women who experienced physical violence by a sexual partner.
METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys conducted in the Gem Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) area in Siaya County, western Kenya in 2011-2

PURPOSE: Extant severe mental illness (SMI) and physical violence literature focus disproportionately on community-based men samples. To address this empirical imbalance, the current study explored violence towards others and oneself among women inpatients with SMI. As those with SMI are more likely to be victims than perpetrators of violence, victimisation was also an important factor assessed in this study.
METHODS: The study used a quantitative within-subject cross-sectional design. Data were extracted from 5675 inpatient women cases between 2009 and 2013.
RESULTS: Women with a manic diso

In 2021, Netflix released Clickbait and The Guilty, which both feature white men who are wrongfully accused of gender-based violence. The character trope of the wrongfully accused man is a staple in popular film and television but takes on a new meaning in the #MeToo era. This article argues that Clickbait's and The Guilty's use of this trope is created by perpetuating rape myths. Thus, they contribute to rape and domestic violence myth acceptance. Furthermore, it will demonstrate that their overall narratives show striking parallels with what Jennifer J. Freyd coined as DARVO (Deny, Attack, R…

The aim of the paper is to investigate associations between a range of markers of gender inequity, including financial, psychological and physical violence, and two proximal practices in HIV prevention, namely discussion of HIV between partners and the woman suggesting condom use. The paper presents an analysis of data from a cross-sectional study of a representative sample of women from three South African Provinces which was primarily undertaken as an epidemiological study of gender-based violence. A multi-stage sampling design was used with clusters sampled with probability proportional to …

There is growing evidence of the association between gender-based violence and HIV from the perspective and experiences of women. The purpose of this study is to examine these associations from the perspective of young men living in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. A community-based sample of 951 men were interviewed, of whom 360 had sex in the past 6 months and were included in these analyses. Almost a third of the men (29.2%) reported that they had been physically violent at least once with an intimate partner. Men who reported more lifetime sexual partners (OR = 8.75; 95% CI = 2.65, 28.92), experie…

BACKGROUND: To determine if improvements in social determinants of health for trans women and decreases in transphobic discrimination and violence occurred over three study periods during which extensive local programs were implemented to specifically address longstanding inequities suffered by the transgender community.
METHODS: Interviewer-administered surveys from repeated cross-sectional Transwomen Empowered to Advance Community Health (TEACH) studies in 2010, 2013 and 2016-2017 in San Francisco collected experiences with transphobia violence and discrimination. Respondent-driven sampling

Transgenerational child sexual abuse (CSA-T) remains one of the most hidden yet persistent forms of interpersonal trauma, reproducing harm across generations and deepening gender-based violence through its disproportionate emotional, symbolic, and social impact on women. This study examines the performative effects of dominant cultural and institutional discourses surrounding motherhood on Chilean women who are non-offending mothers and survivors of CSA, and whose children have also experienced sexual abuse. This study employed a qualitative design grounded in feminist and social constructioni…

We conducted a survey-based study looking at the associations among attachment insecurities (anxiety and avoidance), relationship functioning, and psychological domestic violence. We looked at three relationship functioning variables (i.e., anger management, communication, and conflict resolution) and three domestic psychological violence variables (i.e., derogation and control, jealous-hypervigilance, and threats-control of space). Data were collected from 76 male and 21 female court-mandated batterers. Participants completed the self-report measures of attachment insecurities, relationship f

Previous research has repeatedly shown that gender-based violence affects a considerable proportion of women in any given population. Apart from providing current estimates of the prevalence of sexual violence against women in Germany, we identified specific risk markers applying an advanced statistical method. We analyzed data from a survey of N = 4450 women representative of the German population, conducted by the Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony in 2011. Lifetime prevalence for experiencing sexual violence was 5.4% for women aged 21-40 years (five-year prevalence: 2.5%). No…

BACKGROUND: The widespread promotion of oral contraceptives raises concerns about side effects, informed choices, and contraceptive coercion, which contribute to gynecological violence influenced by systemic factors. The link between gynecological violence and oral contraceptives is understudied and rarely examined through systemic violence theories.
METHODS: To address this gap, we explored how a continuum of symbolic, structural, and slow violence manifests in the physical body by drawing on qualitative online interviews with 19 former oral contraceptive users and six gynecologists in Germa
