Multidrug Resistance Reversed by Maleimide Interactions. A Biological and Synthetic Overview for an Emerging Field.

Multidrug Resistance (MDR) can be considered one of the most frightening adaptation types in bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and eukaryotic cells. It allows the organisms to survive the attack of many drugs used in the daily basis. This forces the development of new and more complex, highly specific drugs to fight diseases. Given the high usage of medicaments, poor variation in active chemical cores, and self-medication, the appearance of MDR is more frequent each time, and has been established as a serious medical and social problem. Over the years it has been possible the identification of severa

Isolation and characterization of a novel bacteriophage SAP_01 for the biocontrol of multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Staphylococcus aureus is an emerging food safety threat because of its ability to form persistent biofilms in food-processing environments, making eradication difficult using conventional disinfectants. In this study, a novel lytic bacteriophage, SAP_01, was isolated from wastewater and evaluated for its potential as a biocontrol agent against MDR S. aureus in food-related environments. SAP_01 formed clear plaques and exhibited a tailed morphology characterized by a polyhedral head and contractile tail. The phage demonstrated rapid adsorption and productive one-step g

Preparation, characterization, and evaluation of chitosan-thymol nanoparticles for antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against catheter-associated uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is a major cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and is capable of forming biofilms on inert surfaces, contributing to persistent and recurrent infections. Given the limitations of conventional antibiotics, alternative strategies are needed to control multidrug-resistant (MDR) UPEC. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of thymol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (TLCNPs) against MDR UPEC isolates urinary catheters. TLCNPs were prepared using the ionotropic gelation method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (S

Multidrug-Resistant and Clinically Relevant Gram-Negative Bacteria Are Present in German Surface Waters.

Water is considered to play a role in the dissemination of antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria including those encoding Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) and carbapenemases. To investigate the role of water for their spread in more detail, we characterized ESBL/Carbapenemase-producing bacteria from surface water and sediment samples using phenotypic and genotypic approaches. ESBL/Carbapenemase-producing isolates were obtained from water/sediment samples. Species and antibiotic resistance were determined. A subset of these isolates (n = 33) was whole-genome-sequenced and analyzed

Single nucleotide polymorphisms may explain the contrasting phenotypes of two variants of a multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain.

Globally, about 4.5% of new tuberculosis (TB) cases are multi-drug-resistant (MDR), i.e. resistant to the two most powerful first-line anti-TB drugs. Indeed, 480,000 people developed MDR-TB in 2015 and 190,000 people died because of MDR-TB. The MDR Mycobacterium tuberculosis M family, which belongs to the Haarlem lineage, is highly prosperous in Argentina and capable of building up further drug resistance without impairing its ability to spread. In this study, we sequenced the whole genomes of a highly prosperous M-family strain (Mp) and its contemporary variant, strain 410, which produced onl

Insights into Antagonistic Interactions of Multidrug Resistant Bacteria in Mangrove Sediments from the South Indian State of Kerala.

Antibiotic resistance is a global issue which is magnified by interspecies horizontal gene transfer. Understanding antibiotic resistance in bacteria in a natural setting is crucial to check whether they are multidrug resistant (MDR) and possibly avoid outbreaks. In this study, we have isolated several antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) (n = 128) from the mangroves in Kerala, India. ARBs were distributed based on antibiotics (p = 1.6 × 10-5). The 16S rRNA gene characterization revealed dominance by Bacillaceae (45%), Planococcaceae (22.5%), and Enterobacteriaceae (17.5%). A high proportion of

Genomic characterization of novel lytic bacteriophages targeting carbapenemase producing multidrug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae from Ethiopia: a molecular study.

Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) is a critical pathogen responsible for a wide range of severe infections. Its escalating resistance to frontline antimicrobials, particularly carbapenems, severely compromises existing therapeutic options and undermines current treatment strategies. This clinical challenge is further exacerbated by the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains and hypervirulent lineages, which substantially complicate infection management and worsen patient outcomes. Ultimately, this alarming convergence of resistance and virulence presents a severe public health thre
