An investigative network analysis mapping global cancer epidemiology.

Cancer incidence is influenced by a combination of extrinsic and genetic factors. We hypothesized that cancers with similar incidence patterns may suggest shared etiologies. Age-standardized incidence rates for 36 cancer types across 185 countries were obtained from GLOBOCAN 2022. Pairwise Spearman's correlation coefficients were computed, and network clustering analyses were performed using six community detection algorithms: Leiden, Surprise, Walktrap, Girvan-Newman, Infomap, and spectral clustering. A dominant cluster was consistently identified, comprising kidney, pancreatic, colorectal, a

[Gastric tumors with GLI1 gene alterations (plexiform fibromyxoma and gastroblastoma). Case report and literature review].

Plexiform fibromyxoma (PFM) and gastroblastoma (GB) are rare gastric tumors with a specific MALAT1::GLI1 rearrangement, included in the conditional spectrum of neoplasms with alterations of the GLI1 gene. The article presents a clinical case of PFM in a 6-year-old girl and a literature review highlighting current data on the morphology, immunophenotype and molecular genetic characteristics of PFM and GB. Despite the common genetic anomaly, differences in the morphology and clinical course of these tumors indicate the need for further research to clarify their relationship and potential reclass

Evolutionary Algorithms for Boolean Functions in Diverse Domains of Cryptography.

The role of Boolean functions is prominent in several areas including cryptography, sequences, and coding theory. Therefore, various methods for the construction of Boolean functions with desired properties are of direct interest. New motivations on the role of Boolean functions in cryptography with attendant new properties have emerged over the years. There are still many combinations of design criteria left unexplored and in this matter evolutionary computation can play a distinct role. This article concentrates on two scenarios for the use of Boolean functions in cryptography. The first use

Poland syndrome: A proposed classification system and perspectives on diagnosis and treatment.

Poland Syndrome (PS) is a rare condition, with an estimated incidence of approximately 1 per 30,000 births and encompasses a wide range of severities of chest and upper arm anomalies. The etiology remains unknown, but genetic involvement is suspected. Few radiological investigations have proven useful in the study PS phenotypes and we propose a reference algorithm for guiding pediatricians. Our experience with 245 PS patients in the last 10 years stimulated a phenotypical classification of PS. The management of the different PS types and a therapeutic algorithm according to the phenotypical fe

Integrated Approaches and Practical Recommendations in Patient Care Identified with 5q Spinal Muscular Atrophy through Newborn Screening.

In recent years, significant progress has been made in 5q Spinal Muscular Atrophy therapeutics, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and intervention for better clinical outcomes. Characterized by spinal cord motor neuron degeneration, 5q-SMA leads to muscle weakness, swallowing difficulties, respiratory insufficiency, and skeletal deformities. Recognizing the pre-symptomatic phases supported by screening and confirmatory genetic tests is crucial for early diagnosis. This work addresses key considerations in implementing 5q-SMA screening within the Brazilian National Newborn Screening

CYSTSCAN-PKD: a comprehensive pipeline for automatic cyst segmentation and counting on µCT scans from PKD animal models.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a genetic disorder causing progressive renal cyst formation, increased kidney volume, and impaired function. The PCK rat is a preclinical model for investigating new treatments, requiring accurate quantification of total kidney volume (TKV), total cyst volume (TCV), and cyst count. We propose an automated segmentation pipeline of kidneys and cysts on µCT scans of excised rat kidneys, followed by automated cyst counting. For segmentation, a 3D U-Net ensemble was implemented using the nnU-Net framework with dual-channel input (raw µCT volum

Re-examining the Diagnostic Criteria for Wilson's Disease: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Wilson's disease (WD) is a heterogeneous genetic disorder for which diagnosis is challenging. We present the case of a 54-year-old woman with a complicated medical history, including hepatitis C, cirrhosis, hepatic encephalopathy, and extensive psychiatric disease, who was transferred to our hospital for management of a spinal epidural abscess. Further findings suggested undiagnosed WD, including bilateral rings around Descemet's membrane and modestly low ceruloplasmin but normal urinary copper excretion. Many algorithms have been proposed for Wilson disease diagnosis, including clinical, labo

Group Sparse Joint Non-Negative Matrix Factorization on Orthogonal Subspace for Multi-Modal Imaging Genetics Data Analysis.

With the development of multi-model neuroimaging technology and gene detection technology, the efforts of integrating multi-model imaging genetics data to explore the virulence factors of schizophrenia (SZ) are still limited. To address this issue, we propose a novel algorithm called group sparse of joint non-negative matrix factorization on orthogonal subspace (GJNMFO). Our algorithm fuses single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data, function magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data and epigenetic factors (DNA methylation) by projecting three-model data into a common basis matrix and three differ

Methodology for the prediction of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation based on heart rate variability feature analysis.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most clinically diagnosed arrhythmia, as its prevalence increases with age, and its initial stage is paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). This pathology usually triggers hemodynamic disorders that can generate cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), causing morbidity and even death. The aim of this study is to predict the occurrence of PAF episodes in order to take precautions to prevent PAF episodes. The PhysioNet AFPDB prediction database was used to extract 77 heart rate variability (HRV) features using time domain, geometrical analysis, Poincaré plot, nonlinear an

VeloHARMO: a deep learning framework for mRNA coding sequence generation and design via translation velocity harmonization.

Heterologous gene expression often results in suboptimal protein yield or activity, potentially influenced by differences in translation dynamics between native and host organisms. Conventional mRNA design approaches based on codon usage frequency can improve expression efficiency. However, codon usage frequency alone does not necessarily reflect codon-level translation velocity. Here, we present VeloHARMO, a computational framework for mRNA coding sequence design based on translation velocity harmonization. VeloHARMO combines organism-specific deep learning models trained on Ribo-seq data wit

Generating risk scenarios adverse to cooperative vehicle-infrastructure perception: An optimization-based framework.

Existing approaches for concrete scenario generation and assessment primarily focus on trajectory-level interactions while neglecting physical perception constraints, such as sensor field-of-view limitations and occlusions from surrounding objects, leading to unrealistic risk representations. To fill this gap, this study proposes a framework that integrates vehicle dynamics, environmental constraints, and perception limitations into a unified generation process. Specifically, vehicle trajectories are parameterized using a kinematic bicycle model and perturbed through controlled variations in l

Identification of large rearrangements in cancer genomes with barcode linked reads.

Large genomic rearrangements involve inversions, deletions and other structural changes that span Megabase segments of the human genome. This category of genetic aberration is the cause of many hereditary genetic disorders and contributes to pathogenesis of diseases like cancer. We developed a new algorithm called ZoomX for analysing barcode-linked sequence reads-these sequences can be traced to individual high molecular weight DNA molecules (>50 kb). To generate barcode linked sequence reads, we employ a library preparation technology (10X Genomics) that uses droplets to partition and barcode

Predicting early clinical recovery in first-episode psychosis: development and external validation of a clinically interpretable multivariable model.

BACKGROUND: Identifying patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) who are unlikely to achieve early clinical recovery (ECR) is critical for personalised intervention and resource allocation. ECR - defined as the concurrent achievement of symptomatic and functional remission - represents a clinically meaningful outcome that captures both illness control and functional reintegration. AIMS: To develop and externally validate prediction models for ECR using clinical, cognitive and genetic data. METHOD: We analysed two large, independent Spanish cohorts: the primeros episodios psicóticos cohort

Optimization of multi-AGV task allocation based on an improved PSO algorithm.

Research on task allocation for multiple automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in factory environments is a key topic in intelligent manufacturing. Existing studies often struggle to balance fairness and priority in task allocation, leading to low AGV utilization and high no-load distances. Moreover, the stability and applicability of task allocation algorithms in real-world production environments face significant challenges. To address these issues, a mathematical model is formulated with the objective of minimizing the no-load distances of all AGVs in material delivery tasks. The model is subseq
