Mapping the Landscape of Epigenetic Research in Diabetes Mellitus: A Decade-Long Bibliometric Analysis (2014-2024).

INTRODUCTION: Epigenetic regulation constitutes critical molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of diabetes and disease progression. While substantial mechanistic investigations exist, the field lacks systematic mapping of research trends, collaborative networks, and emerging frontiers. OBJECTIVES: To conduct the first comprehensive bibliometric evaluation of epigenetic studies in diabetes mellitus and its complications (2014-2024), identifying key research domains, international collaboration patterns, and innovative investigative directions to inform strategic research planning an

[Studies on the association of genes with language disorders in the post-genomic era].

Since genetic research entered the post-genomic era, the high heritability of language disorders has been confirmed. A variety of genetic-related diseases may cause various types of language disorders in children and/or adults. This article has summarized language disorders and their underlying mechanisms by searching the Web of Science database over the last decade, and combed the genetic researches for dyslexia, frontotemporal degeneration, specific language disorder, childhood speech apraxia and other single diseases that are strongly associated with the language disorders. It also provided…

My Research Results: a program to facilitate return of clinically actionable genomic research findings.

Researchers and research participants increasingly support returning clinically actionable genetic research findings to participants, but researchers may lack the skills and resources to do so. In response, a genetic counsellor-led program to facilitate the return of clinically actionable findings to research participants was developed to fill the identified gap in research practice and meet Australian research guidelines. A steering committee of experts reviewed relevant published literature and liaised with researchers, research participants and clinicians to determine the scope of the progr…

A bibliometric overview of craniosynostosis research development.

This article reviews the development of research in the field of craniosynostosis from a bibliometric standpoint. Craniosynostosis is a malformation occurring during the early development of the skull, when one or more of the sutures close too early, causing problems with normal brain and skull growth. Research in this field has developed from early clinical case descriptions, to genetic discoveries responsible for the occurring malformations and onwards to developing sophisticated surgical treatment. In this article we describe these developments, zoom in on publication trends and characteris

Pharmacogenetics: a new challenge for health law.

Developments in pharmacogenetics make it possible to determine the genetic factors that influence variations in response to medicine. Differences in response to medication may be related to the genetic characteristics of the individual, to the genetic make-up of the diseased tissue or to both. Advantages include optimal therapeutic effect, safe medication, minimised side-effects, and development of medication for small groups of patients. Strict adherence to patients' rights and to the medical professional standard must prevent negative effects of pharmacogenetics on individual rights, notably

ALBINISM AND WATER ESCAPE PERFORMANCE IN THE MOUSE.

Observation of six inbred strains of mice in a water escape test revealed that albino strains perform markedly slower than non-albino strains. Performances of F(1), F(2), and backcross offspring of selected crosses between these strains indicated that there is an association between the homozygous condition for albinism (cc) and slow performance in the water escape test.

SEX-LINKED ALBINISM IN THE JAPANESE QUAIL.

From a single white Coturnix chick hatched in August 1963, a white colony has been developed. The results of breeding experiments are consistent with the view that the albinism is sex-linked and recessive. It appears likely that the mutation occurred in the first white female hatched, or her sire.

Genetics of 21-hydroxylase deficiency: Clinical presentation should guide the investigation.

A young couple applied for preconception counseling because of a case of congenital adrenal hyperplasia in the family. They were concerned about their risk of giving birth to a child with classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The case presented here demonstrates the complexity of the genetics of 21-hydroxylase deficiency and the way the clinical presentation should guide the genetic inquiry.

Noncoding RNAs in Apicomplexan Parasites: An Update.

Recent breakthroughs in high-throughput technologies, transcriptomics, and advances in our understanding of gene regulatory networks have enhanced our perspective on the complex interplay between parasite and host. Noncoding RNA molecules have been implicated in critical roles covering a broad range of biological processes in the Apicomplexa. Processes that are affected range from parasite development to host-parasite interactions and include interactions with epigenetic machinery and other regulatory factors. Here we review recent progress involving noncoding RNAs and their functions in the A

Tackling legal challenges posed by population biobanks: reconceptualising consent requirements.

This paper examines, from an Australian and international perspective, the phenomenon of population 'biobanks' (research platforms comprisin … nsent in circumstances where permission is sought for future use of samples in, as yet unspecified, genetic research. In pursuing this aim, the objectives underlying this paper are to ensure that unnecessary impediments to research are removed and, at the same time, to facilitate research participation and respect for autonomous choices by research subjects.

The contributions of the Genome Project to the study of schistosomiasis.

In this paper we review the impact that the availability of the Schistosoma mansoni genome sequence and annotation has had on schistosomiasis research. Easy access to the genomic information is important and several types of data are currently being integrated, such as proteomics, microarray and polymorphic loci. Access to the genome annotation and powerful means of extracting information are major resources to the research community.

Polygenic risk scores in human genetics for study design discovery and translation.

Polygenic risk scores (PRS) quantify the component of disease risk captured by measured additive common variants. Their use as a study design variable, rather than only as a predictive endpoint, broadens their scientific value in human genetics. PRS can define informative extremes of common-variant burden, identify discordance between phenotype and PRS-estimated risk, and facilitate the detection of subgroup-specific or residual mechanisms that may be obscured in conventional case-control analyses. This review outlines four major PRS-informed design strategies: tail sampling based on PRS extre
