Bridging the Gap: Addressing the Disparity Between Expectations and Practical Training in Oncology During Medical School.

Cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally, leading to significant healthcare and socioeconomic burdens. Medical education is crucial in preparing future healthcare professionals to manage cancer care effectively. To compare the expectations of first-year medical students about oncology training with the actual knowledge and experiences of more advanced students. A cross-sectional, quantitative study was conducted with 373 medical students (152 first-year, 121 fourth-year, and 100 sixth-year) using structured questionnaires. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 25.0, with a 5%

Canadian Cardiovascular Society Clinical Practice Update on Cardiogenetic Testing.

This Canadian Cardiovascular Society clinical practice update provides essential guidance on integrating genetic testing into clinical care for inherited cardiovascular conditions, including primary arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, aortopathies, familial hypercholesterolemia, and congenital heart diseases. Genetic testing for these conditions is crucial for early detection, risk stratification, and management, and significantly influences patient and family outcomes, particularly regarding sudden cardiac death risk. Historically managed within specialized genetics or cardiology clinics, growing

[Diagnostic DNA testing for Huntington disease].

Direct DNA testing for the autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder, Huntington's disease, may be performed in a diagnostic setting, as a presymptomatic procedure or prenatally. This paper is intended for physicians practising outside departments of medical genetics who are considering diagnostic testing of patients presenting with symptoms or signs compatible with Huntington's disease. It offers a brief overview of practically relevant clinical, epidemiological, molecular and legal aspects of diagnostic genetic testing for Huntington's disease in Norway. We stress the need for adequate i

Of replications and refutations: the status of Alzheimer's disease genetic research.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a genetically complex and heterogeneous disorder. To date, mutations in three genes (APP, PSEN1, PSEN2) have been described to cause familial early-onset AD. In addition, a common polymorphism in the gene encoding apolipoprotein E (APOE) has been associated with the more common late-onset form of the disease. However, many studies have shown that genetic factors other than APOE play an important role in late-onset AD. Along these lines, a recent report predicted the existence of at least four additional late-onset AD genes, one of which was estimated to have a much

The European Society of Human Genetics-Young committee- activities and achievements between 2019-2022.

The European Society of Human Genetics—Young Committee (ESHG-Y) aims to support young human geneticists by developing strategies and programs for better education and creating a strong network in all European countries. In this report, we present the ESHG-Y projects conducted since its conception. We organized the educational sessions at the ESHG Annual Conference, the European Dysmorphology Meetings, and a virtual session in collaboration with the European Board of Medical Genetics (EBMG). Also, the ESHG-Y regularly promotes relevant activities and succeeded in creating an active network of y

Psychiatric genetics: recent advances and clinical implications.

OBJECTIVE: To present an overview on current progress and future directions in psychiatric genetics. METHODS: The review of studies that have demonstrated a genetic contribution to a wide range of psychopathology using family, twin, adoption studies and exploration of the methods and limitations of molecular genetic studies. RESULTS: Single gene disorders has been the area that is most straightforward with striking advances in disorders such as Huntington Disease and early onset familial Alzheimer disease. Complex phenotypes such as schizophrenia and affective disorder have presented greater

Common genetic variants do not impact clinical prediction of methotrexate treatment outcomes in early rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Methotrexate (MTX) is the mainstay initial treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but individual response varies and remains difficult to predict. The role of genetics remains unclear, but studies suggest its importance. METHODS: Incident RA patients starting MTX-monotherapy were identified through a large-scale Swedish register linkage. Demographic, clinical, medical, and drug history features were combined with fully imputed genotype data and used to train and evaluate multiple learning models to predict key MTX treatment outcomes. RESULTS: Among 2432 patients, we consistently

[French recommendations for malignant pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas by the national ENDOCAN-COMETE network].

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors, developed respectively in the adrenal medulla and in extra-adrenal locations. Their malignancy is defined by the presence of distant metastases. Forty percent of them are inherited and can be part of different hereditary syndromes. Their management is ensured in France by the multidisciplinary expert centers of the ENDOCAN-COMETE national network "Cancers of the Adrenal gland", certified by the National Cancer Institute and discussed within multidisciplinary team meetings. The diagnostic and therapeutic work-up must be standa

On-Demand Patient-Specific Phenotype-to-Genotype Ebola Virus Characterization.

Biosafety, biosecurity, logistical, political, and technical considerations can delay or prevent the wide dissemination of source material containing viable virus from the geographic origin of an outbreak to laboratories involved in developing medical countermeasures (MCMs). However, once virus genome sequence information is available from clinical samples, reverse-genetics systems can be used to generate virus stocks de novo to initiate MCM development. In this study, we developed a reverse-genetics system for natural isolates of Ebola virus (EBOV) variants Makona, Tumba, and Ituri, which hav
