Multi-TPC: A Multimodal Dataset for Three-Party Conversations with Speech, Motion, and Gaze.

Analysis and generation of conversational gestures, especially in multi-party settings, remains an open challenge in many fields, due to the lack of publicly available datasets, models, and standardized evaluation metrics. To address this gap, we introduce Multi-TPC, a multimodal dataset of three-party conversations featuring synchronized speech, motion, and gaze. Multi-TPC captures rich conversational dynamics, enabling the study of interactions between multiple participants. Our statistical analysis reveals correlations between gestures and various modalities, including audio, text, and spea…

Visual Sensory Cortices Causally Contribute to Auditory Word Recognition Following Sensorimotor-Enriched Vocabulary Training.

Despite a rise in the use of "learning by doing" pedagogical methods in praxis, little is known as to how the brain benefits from these methods. Learning by doing strategies that utilize complementary information ("enrichment") such as gestures have been shown to optimize learning outcomes in several domains including foreign language (L2) training. Here we tested the hypothesis that behavioral benefits of gesture-based enrichment are critically supported by integrity of the biological motion visual cortices (bmSTS). Prior functional neuroimaging work has implicated the visual motion cortices …

Structural Disconnection of the Tool Use Network after Left Hemisphere Stroke Predicts Limb Apraxia Severity.

Producing a tool use gesture is a complex process drawing upon the integration of stored knowledge of tools and their associated actions with sensory-motor mechanisms supporting the planning and control of hand and arm actions. Understanding how sensory-motor systems in parietal cortex interface with semantic representations of actions and objects in the temporal lobe remains a critical issue and is hypothesized to be a key determinant of the severity of limb apraxia, a deficit in producing skilled action after left hemisphere stroke. We used voxel-based and connectome-based lesion-symptom map

Apraxia.

UNLABELLED: The term apraxia refers to 'higher level' disorders of motor control. Apraxia differs from other motor symptoms of unilateral brain damage by the bilaterality of symptoms following unilateral lesions. Lesions causing apraxia are located predominantly in the left hemisphere and apraxia is frequently, although not invariably, associated with aphasia. Examination for apraxia traditionally assesses imitation of gestures, performance of communicative gestures on command, and use of tools and objects. It has, however, been amply demonstrated that these three domains can be affected more …

Imitation and matching of hand and finger postures.

Converging evidence from patients with unilateral brain lesions, from a patient with callosal disconnection, and from functional imaging in healthy subjects suggests different competencies of both hemispheres for imitation and matching of hand and finger postures. Whereas the left hemisphere is fully competent for processing hand postures, an additional right hemisphere contribution is needed for finger postures. I propose that the left hemisphere is responsible for coding gestures with reference to knowledge about the structure of the human body, whereas a right hemisphere contribution is nee…

What is developmental dyspraxia?

The idea of developmental dyspraxia has been discussed in the research literature for almost 100 years. However, there continues to be a lack of consensus regarding both the definition and description of this disorder. This paper presents a neuropsychologically based operational definition of developmental dyspraxia that emphasizes that developmental dyspraxia is a disorder of gesture. Research that has investigated the development of praxis is discussed. Further, different types of gestural disorders displayed by children and different mechanisms that underlie developmental dyspraxia are comp

Laryngeal kinematics in voiceless obstruents produced by hearing-impaired speakers.

During normal production of voiceless consonants several events occur simultaneously in the vocal tract. These events must be temporally coordinated. Earlier work has indicated that a breakdown in interarticulator timing can contribute to the characteristic voiced-voiceless errors produced by hearing-impaired speakers. The present study examines kinematic details of the laryngeal articulatory gesture in 2 deaf speakers and a control subject using transillumination of the larynx. Results indicate that hearing-impaired speakers often do not produce differences between stops and fricatives in the

Vibrotactile stimulation for intersystemic reorganization in the treatment of apraxia of speech.

Intersystemic reorganization in the treatment of apraxia of speech involves pairing fragments of a speech motor program with internal cues generated by some other, more intact system. Gestural reorganization, pairing speech with limb gestures, somehow provides an organizational framework for the proper sequencing of motor speech movements. This paper briefly develops some hypotheses suggesting that afference resulting from limb movements rather than a central movement program is involved in gestural reorganization, and that vibrotactile stimulation may have advantages over visual or auditory m…

Communication behaviors in autism and developmental language delay.

The communicative behavior of autistic and developmental language delay (DLD) children matched for nonverbal mental age and mean length of utterance (MLU) was compared to that of normally-developing (ND) 2-yr-olds. Autistic children were less able than other children to respond correctly to language or gestures used to direct their attention, used attention directing (pointing, showing) less frequently, and produced more echolalic speech when making requests. DLD and ND children differed only in number of pronouns used while requesting. Attention-directing gestures were associated with recepti…

Validation of the Apraxia Screen TULIA (AST) in Schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Deficits in social interaction and community functioning, including impaired use, performance, and perception of hand gestures, are key features in schizophrenia. A well-established tool to assess gesture deficits is the test of upper limb apraxia (TULIA). However, given its time-consuming application based on video analyses, research has proposed the bedside apraxia screen of TULIA (AST). This study aims to test the validity and reliability of the AST to detect gesture abnormalities at bedside in a sample of 27 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizotypal disorder, acute a…

Treating limb apraxia via action semantics: a preliminary study.

Limb apraxia is evident in approximately 50% of patients after left hemisphere cerebral vascular accident (LCVA) and increases disability and caregiver dependence. Individuals with apraxia exhibit abnormalities in spatio-temporal aspects of gesture production and/or in knowledge of tool-related actions (action semantics). This preliminary study of three LCVA participants aimed to (i) explore the efficacy of a novel Action Network Treatment (ANT) that focused on improving the semantic association between tool actions and other types of tool knowledge, an intervention inspired by successful sema

Facets of Pantomime.

OBJECTIVES: Exploring the nature of defective pantomime in apraxia. METHODS: Critical review of behavioral associations and dissociations between defective pantomime, imitation of gestures, and real tool use. Analysis of congruencies between crucial lesions for pantomime, imitation, and tool use. RESULTS: There are behavioral double dissociations between pantomime and imitation, and their cerebral substrates show very little overlap. Whereas defective pantomime is bound to temporal and inferior frontal lesions, imitation is mainly affected by parietal lesions. Pantomime usually replicates th…

Cross-day analysis of Multicode Surface Electromyography based Biometrics for Personal Identification.

Recently, surface electromyography (sEMG) has emerged as a novel biometric trait for personal identification, potentially providing a superior spoof-resistant solution over existing traits. The sEMG possesses a unique dual-mode security: they differ between individuals (biometric-mode), and different gestures have different sEMG characteristics (knowledge-mode). To leverage the knowledge-mode facet of the dual-mode security, the previous studies have utilized a multicode framework involving the fusion of codes (gestures), however, the analysis involved data recorded on a single day and from a …

Driving anger in Malaysia.

The present study examined the types of situations that cause Malaysian drivers to become angry. The 33-item version of the driver anger scale (Deffenbacher et al., 1994) was used to investigate driver anger amongst a sample of 339 drivers. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the fit of the original six-factor model (discourtesy, traffic obstructions, hostile gestures, slow driving, illegal driving and police presence), after removing one item and allowing three error pairs to covary, was satisfactory. Female drivers reported more anger, than males, caused by traffic obstruction and hosti…
