156 cases of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome treated by acupuncture.

The principle of clearing Yangming and nourishing the kidney and heart was adopted in the treatment of 156 cases of Gilles de la Tourette's Syndrome with acupuncture. The total effective rate was 92.3%, and the cure rate in children aged 11-15 years was markedly higher than that in children 6-10 years of age. Among 84 cases with abnormal EEG, the pathological waves in 54 disappeared or ameliorated after the treatment.

Adaptation and verification of the relocatable Gill-Thomas-Cosman frame in stereotactic radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) combines techniques of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) with radiation therapy fractionation schemes. Fractionation in SRT necessitates a relocatable immobilization system to precisely reproduce the patient's position at each treatment. The Gill-Thomas-Cosman (GTC) head frame is such an immobilization device compatible with the Brown-Roberts-Wells (BRW) stereotactic system. We describe this device, our modifications to the original design, the repeat position accuracy, and the daily verification procedure. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The original GTC frame w

The metabolic effects of limbic leucotomy in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Regional cerebral oxygen metabolism was measured before and after limbic leucotomy in a patient with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, and obsessional slowness. The preoperative scan showed hypermetabolism in the caudate nuclei, which normalised after operation. It is proposed that the beneficial effects of this operation on both tics and obsessive compulsive behaviour are mediated by disruption of abnormal neural activity in basal ganglia-thalamocortical loops.

Pharmacologic controversy of CNS stimulants in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

The controversy of the use of stimulants in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) can only be understood by examining the relationship between GTS and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), because the relationship between the two disorders is complex, and stimulants are used in the one (ADHD) and may be contraindicated in the other (GTS). This relationship therefore has to be viewed from several perspectives, including clinical, genetic, neurobiochemical, neurophysiological, and treatment strategies, to highlight the complexities involved, and reasons for controversy. The present r

The genetics of obsessive compulsive disorder and Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

This article reviews the evidence that obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) are both familial and genetic. Studies are summarized that suggest that (1) some forms of OCD are related to GTS, (2) some forms of OCD are familial and may not be related to GTS, and (3) the patterns of inheritance of GTS and OCD within the same families are consistent with the transmission of an autosomal dominant genetic locus.

Computerized EEG frequency analysis in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

EEG abnormality has been reported in Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome but not confirmed in later studies. We carried out computerized EEG frequency analysis in 30 patients with the disorder, using Nicolet Pathfinder II frequency analysis software, versions 1.2 and 3.1 EEG was recorded from 01-A1+A2, 02-A1+A2, Fz-A1+A2, F7-C3, F8-C4, T5-01, and T6-02 in Tourette Syndrome patients and controls. Controls were taking no medications, and drug therapy for Tourette Syndrome had been stopped or not yet initiated in the patient group. Modal alpha frequency (MAF), maximal alpha frequency (MxAF), and spect

A four-step hypnotherapy model for Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Hypnotherapy may sometimes be helpful in ameliorating the behavioral characteristics of Tourette's Syndrome. This paper presents a case study of an adolescent male with Tourette's Syndrome who was referred by his physician for hypnotherapy for his disorder. A four-step treatment model involved progressive relaxation, finger-tip temperature feedback using a biotic finger band, Spiegel's eye-roll procedure, and imagery. The adolescent was in treatment for nine sessions, from October 1985 to March 1986, a period of 6 months. At the end of the nine sessions, his tics and vocalizations were minimal

The antagonistic effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine and methylxanthine on the gill cilia of Mytilus edulis.

The laterofrontal (LF) cirri on isolated gill filaments of Mytilus edulis, prepared in natural seawater, are active and initially beat with an average frequency of about 8 Hz (with a range of 6-14 Hz). However, the lateral (L) cilia on these filaments are arrested in a position at the end of their recovery stroke. Perfusion of the filament with artificial seawater (ASW), with or without 1% ethanol, has little or no biological effect on the activity of the LF cirri, although a transitory decrease in frequency often accompanies the perfusion process. The L cilia remain arrested during perfusion

Effect of tetrabenazine on tics and sleep of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Supersensitivity of dopaminergic receptors may be responsible for the tics of Tourette's syndrome. Symptoms improve after treatment with dopamine blockers, but side effects limit use of these drugs. We evaluated tetrabenazine (which has both presynaptic monoamine-depleting effects and postsynaptic blocking action) in nine patients. Marked and lasting (more than 6 months) improvement occurred in four patients (ages 10 to 14 years), mild or transient (less than 6 months) improvement occurred in three patients (ages 11 to 20 years), and two patients (age 48 years) had minimal or no response. Biological and psychological aspects of a case of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

The case of a 12-year-old girl with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome is presented, and the following factors are discussed: psychological aspects, urinary excretion of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethylene glycol (MHPG) and unconjugated amines, and CT scan findings. The most noticeable differences from normal controls seen in the urine studies were elevated levels of beta-phenylethylamine and the catecholamine metabolites normetanephrine, MHPG, and 3-methoxytyramine, and a decrease in 5-hydroxytryptamine. A CT scan revealed a slight increase in density in the caudate nuclei bilaterally; this was t

Morphological and biochemical studies on liver, kidney and gill of fishes affected by pesticides.

Effect of a herbicide, paraquat (1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridilium-dichloride), the fungicide copper sulphate, and zinc chloride was studied on the histological structure of liver, kidney and gill of three fish species with different feeding habits, viz.: a herbivorous, silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix); an omnivorous, common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) and a carnivorous, sheatfish (Silurus glanis L.). The organs were studied electron microscopically after fixation according to Karnovsky. The toxic effect manifested itself characteristically on the respective species, regardless of the typ

On the use of clonidine and thioproperazine in a woman with Gilles de la Tourette's disease.

A 25-year-old woman with Gilles de la Tourette's disease was successfully treated with clonidine (an inhibitor of noradrenaline release). However, the drug was stopped because of side effects. Thioproperazine, a phenothiazine derivative which blocks subcortical dopaminergic receptors, suppressed Gilles de la Tourette's symptoms totally. The patient has tolerated the drug well for over a year since its introduction. The pharmacomanometric investigation performed in this patient showed hyperactivity of her noradrenergic system.

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome: report of five cases in the Chinese.

Five cases of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome occurring in the Chinese are described. The onset, course, symptomatology and family psychopathology are similar to those reported in Caucasians. On the parameters of APGAR score, psychological testing, EEG and psychiatric examination all had at least one abnormality. The response to haloperidol was uniformly good. Follow-up results showed that all were able to lead a fairly normal life after treatment. Though the cases are few in number, the findings seem to support the hypothesis that the syndrome has an organic substratum subject to psychologic
