Recent trends in clinical isolates from paranasal sinusitis.

Trends in the detection of causative pathogens and changes in bacterial counts in patients with sinusitis treated between January 1989 and December 1993 were investigated. In adult patients with chronic sinusitis, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS), Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae), Corynebacterium sp., Haemophilus influenzae (H. influenzae), and Moraxella catarrhalis were often isolated while Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and anaerobic bacteria were detected in 2.4% and 5.3% of patients, respectively. The bacteria isolated from adult pat

Azithromycin and clarithromycin.

Azithromycin and clarithromycin are alternatives to conventional macrolides in the routine treatment of many dermatologic, upper respiratory, and lower respiratory tract infections. In this role as alternative therapy, they are better tolerated, less toxic, and more convenient to take, although at a greater cost to the patient. This dosing convenience is an important consideration for the clinician; as shown by Nelson, patient compliance ranges from 95% with once-daily dosing to 58% with four-times-a-day dosing. Thus, less frequent dosing with both drugs as well as the shorter course of therap

Enumeration of bacteria in clinically significant blood cultures in neutropenic and non-neutropenic patients using a pour plate method.

A 3-year review of clinically significant positive blood cultures was undertaken to assess any differences in the blood bacterial count between haematological neutropenic and other non-neutropenic patients. The pour-plate method was used. In Gram-positive infections the pour plate contained colonies in 61% of haematological patients and in 41% of others. In Gram-negative infection the figures were 54% and 25% respectively. The mean numbers of bacteria per ml of blood were increased in haematological patients compared with the others for both groups of organisms.

Bacteria and nematodes in the conjunctiva of mule deer from Wyoming and Utah.

Swabs of conjunctiva were collected from 44 live and 226 hunter-harvested mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Wyoming and Utah (USA). We identified 29 gram negative and 22 gram positive bacterial taxonomic categories, but many isolates from hunter-harvested animals were environmental contaminants. Staphylococcus spp. and Micrococcus spp. were the most common gram positive bacteria isolated, and Enterobacter spp., Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas spp. were common gram negative bacteria isolated. Thelazia californiensis were found in 15% of hunter-harvested deer in Utah in 1994 and in 8% in 19

Gram differentiation of bacteria by acoustic-enhanced flow cytometry.

Introduction. Recently, flow cytometry has gained the attention of clinical microbiologists for its ability to characterize bacterial species. This article shows how acoustic-enhanced flow cytometry, combined with the fluorescent dye SYTO 9, can differentiate between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.Gap Statement. SYTO 9 is a cell membrane-permeable dye with a high affinity for nucleic acids in both living and non-living prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and has been used as a counterstain to discriminate between live and dead cells in combination with other dyes. However, the consisten

Evaluating the potential of vancomycin-modified magnetic beads as a tool for sample preparation in diagnostic assays.

Vancomycin-functionalized micro- or nanoparticles are frequently used for isolation and enrichment of bacteria from various samples. Theoretically, only Gram-positive organisms should adhere to the functionalized surfaces as vancomycin is an antibiotic targeting a peptidoglycan precursor in the cell wall, which in Gram-negative bacteria is shielded by the outer cell membrane. In the literature, however, it is often reported that Gram-negative bacteria also bind efficiently to the vancomycin-modified particles. The goal of our study was to identify the underlying cause for these different findi

Antimicrobial Properties of Capsaicin: Available Data and Future Research Perspectives.

Capsaicin is a phytochemical derived from plants of the genus Capsicum and subject of intensive phytochemical research due to its numerous physiological and therapeutical effects, including its important antimicrobial properties. Depending on the concentration and the strain of the bacterium, capsaicin can exert either bacteriostatic or even bactericidal effects against a wide range of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, while in certain cases it can reduce their pathogenicity by a variety of mechanisms such as mitigating the release of toxins or inhibiting biofilm formation. Infection increases activity via Toll dependent and independent mechanisms in Drosophila melanogaster.

Host behavioural changes are among the most apparent effects of infection. 'Sickness behaviour' can involve a variety of symptoms, including anorexia, depression, and changed activity levels. Here, using a real-time tracking and behavioural profiling platform, we show that in Drosophila melanogaster, several systemic bacterial infections cause significant increases in physical activity, and that the extent of this activity increase is a predictor of survival time in some lethal infections. Using multiple bacteria and D. melanogaster immune and activity mutants, we show that increased activity

[Antibacterial effect of local anaesthetics].

Medications may have important impacts other than the original effect. It is important to know about these to avoid side effects or use these beneficial capabilities. The antibacterial effect of local anaesthetics has been known since 1909. For decades, no attention has been payed to this fact. In the 1960s, the high number of negative microbiological results when local anaesthetics were used before sampling drew attention to the possible antibacterial effect. Studies suggested that cultures from bronchoscopy, wound, skin or nasal samples may be affected. Bupivacaine 0,5% and lidocaine 2% have

Mathematical modeling of the 'inoculum effect': six applicable models and the MIC advancement point concept.

Antimicrobial treatment regimens against bacterial pathogens are designed using the drug's minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) measured at a bacterial density of 5.7 log10(colony-forming units (CFU)/mL) in vitro. However, MIC changes with pathogen density, which varies among infectious diseases and during treatment. Incorporating this into treatment design requires realistic mathematical models of the relationships. We compared the MIC-density relationships for Gram-negative Escherichia coli and non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and St
