HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 60-year-old man with anaemia was found to have a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) which was classified as refractory anemia with ringsideroblasts (RAEB). Because of severe fever the patient was hospitalized. Waldeyer's throat ring revealed signs of acute inflammation.
LABORATORY FINDINGS: Indicated severe anemia and thrombocytopenia. Leucocytes were 8000/ml with a pathological shift to the left (1920/ml blasts). CRP (4.7 g/dl) and BSG (59/91mm) were abnormal. An axial CT of the neck showed a left sided paratonsillar abscess.

Lymphocytic and granulocytic hypophysitis are rare pituitary masses. A series of five dealt with at a single centre is presented and discussed. Retrospective analysis of pathology records revealed the cases. Of pituitary mass lesions dealt with in this centre, 0.8% have the diagnosis. Five females presented, one pregnant at the time of presentation, three presenting with signs and symptoms of panhypopituitarism, and two with visual problems. All were treated by surgical means. Granulocytic sarcoma or chloroma is defined as an extramedullary solid tumor, composed of granulocytic precursor cells at various levels of differentiation. Granulocytic sarcoma is mostly associated with acute and chronic leukemia, rarely with polycythemia vera and myelofibrosis. The use of special immuno-histochemical stains is mandatory, because this tumor is often misdiagnosed as malignant lymphoma. We report two cases of granulocytic sarcoma (tonsil and ovary) associated with chronic myelogenous leukemia. We describe the first reported association of atypical CML and granulocytic sarcoma.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is normally present in amniotic fluid and then to determine if amniotic-fluid G-CSF levels are affected by labor and intrauterine infection.
METHODS: Amniotic fluid was collected from 35 patients in 4 groups: no labor, early labor, late labor, and labor plus chorioamnionitis. G-CSF levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Acid phosphatase activity examinations and nitrotetrazolium blue reduction test after latex stimulation in peripheral blood neutrophils were performed in the group of 32 coking plant workers. Reference group consisted of 150 men not exposed to any toxic substances. Neutrophils of coking plant workers, comparing with the reference group, revealed decreased activity of acid phosphatase and impaired reduction of nitrotetrazolium blue after latex stimulation. Quantitative indexes of myeloperoxidase content, elastase and catepsin G in the neutrophil granulocytes of newborns and laboratory animals are determined. An indirect immunofluorescence test using anti-granulocyte antibodies was developed to examine many sera samples in a one-step procedure by flow cytometry. Sera from patients with unexplained neutropenia have been assayed for anti-granulocyte opsonic activity using a chemiluminescence technique which measures the metabolic response of human monocytes to antibody-coated granulocytes. In a 18 years old, Ph1 negative woman a lymphoblastic lymphoma developed after 16 months of treatment for juvenile form of CGL. In the course of the disease we observed twice the myeloblastic transformation and once the low differentiated transformation of CGL. Based on available methods we are not in a position to exclude a particular form of lymphoblastic transformation of CGL involving lymph nodes without leukaemic blood picture.

Twenty-one patients with chronic granulocytic leukaemia underwent marrow transplantation. The donors were human-lymphocyte antigen-identical siblings in 19 cases. In the remaining 2 cases the donor was a parent in one and an identical twin in the other.
