Pyogenic Granuloma: A Retrospective 10-year Analysis of 82 Cases.

OBJECTIVE: Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a common acquired hemorrhagic benign vascular lesion of the skin and mucous membranes. Recently, PG was considered a capillary hemangioma and was renamed as lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH). A clinical retrospective analysis of PG cases in our institute over a period of 10 years was performed. METHODS: The study involved 82 cases of pathologically diagnosed PG managed and treated at the Plastic Surgery Department of Tokai University between 1995 and 2004. Individual data from charts were reviewed for age, gender, affected site, size of lesion, predispos

Oral pyogenic granuloma in hemophilia: a report of 2 cases.

Pyogenic granulomas (PGs) are benign vascular lesions occurring in skin and mucous membranes, often secondary to trauma or chronic inflammation. Oral PGs have never been described previously in hemophilia. We describe 2 pediatric patients with hemophilia A, who developed PGs with inadequate factor therapy for bleeding. PG pathophysiology suggests an association with hemophilia given chronic vascular damage and low-grade inflammation at sites of bleeding in hemophilia patients. Knowledge about the occurrence of PGs in hemophilia patients is essential for prompt diagnosis and early institution o

Pyogenic granuloma of the ileum diagnosed by double-balloon enteroscopy.

A pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a capillary hemangioma that usually occurs on the skin or in the oral cavity; it is rarely observed in the gastrointestinal tract. We herein describe a case of a 86-year-old woman who presented with anemia. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy did not reveal any significant bleeding focus, but capsule endoscopy revealed a bleeding focus in the small intestine. We performed double-balloon enteroscopy and identified a 7-mm-diameter, reddish, subpedunculated, hemispheric polyp with a smooth surface in the small intestine, approximately 100 cm from the ileocecal

Minimally invasive approach to eliminate pyogenic granuloma: a case report.

Pyogenic granuloma is one of the inflammatory hyperplasia seen in the oral cavity. The term is a misnomer because it is not related to infection and arises in response to various stimuli such as low-grade local irritation, traumatic injury, or hormonal factors. It is most commonly seen in females in their second decade of life due to vascular effects of hormones. Although excisional surgery is the treatment of choice for it, this paper presents the safest and most minimally invasive procedure for the regression of pyogenic granuloma.

Management of rectal pyogenic granuloma with transanal mucosal sleeve resection.

In children, pyogenic granulomas are most commonly cutaneous benign vascular lesions but can also present in the gastrointestinal tract. When they occur in the intestine, they can cause acute or chronic gastrointestinal bleeding. We present an unusual case of rectal pyogenic granuloma and our management strategy.

A rare case of generalized pyogenic granuloma: a case report.

Gingival enlargement is defined as an overgrowth or increase in size of the gingiva. Enlargement can be of many types depending on etiologic factors like inflammation, drug-induced effects, neoplasm, hormonal imbalance, and systemic involvement (leukemia, etc). Drugs and hormonal imbalance are the most common causes of gingival enlargement. Nonspecific conditioned enlargement, or pyogenic granuloma, is considered an exaggerated conditioned response to minor trauma or chronic irritation. Pyogenic granuloma occurring in the oral cavity is a common phenomenon. However, simultaneously occurring ge

Proliferative activity in oral pyogenic granuloma: a comparative immunohistochemical study.

CONTEXT: Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is one of the most common reactive vascular lesions in the oral mucosa, which has been divided into the lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH) and the non lobular type (non-LCH) as two distinct entities, on the basis of some investigations. AIMS: This study aims to compare the proliferative and angiogenic activity of two histological types of PG to determine whether they have two distinct types of biological behavior. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, immunostaining was performed on 10 cases of each type of PG. MATERIALS AND METHO

Pyogenic granuloma complicating pulsed-dye laser therapy for cherry angioma.

A 37 year-old-woman presented for cosmetic removal of a 7-mm (diameter) cherry angioma on her right anterior thigh. Various treatment options were discussed and removal of the lesion using pulsed-dye laser was carried out. The patient returned 5 weeks later complaining of bleeding from the treatment site, which on examination showed a 23 x 23-mm friable nodular lesion with the typical appearance of a pyogenic granuloma. This lesion was removed by shave excision, curettage and electrodessication. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma. This is a rare occurre

Regression of a lesion resembling pyogenic granuloma after endodontic treatment.

A rare case of regression of a lesion resembling pyogenic granuloma after endodontic treatment of a maxillary lateral incisor in a 16-year-old female patient is reported. After clinical and radiographic examination, the maxillary right lateral incisor was endodontically treated in two visits. At the second visit, clinical regression of the exophytic lesion was evident and the size of this lesion had been greatly decreased, so was not biopsied. After 3 weeks, the exophytic lesion had totally disappeared. This case report indicates that surgical excision of exophytic lesions resembling pyogenic

Surgical treatment of giant pyogenic granuloma of the upper eyelid.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG), also known as lobular capillary hemangioma, is a benign acquired vascular lesion of the skin and mucous membranes. Diagnosis is aided by history of surgery, trauma or inflammation and characteristic clinical appearance, whereas, definitive diagnosis is made by histopathologic findings. PG is most often located on the head, neck, extremities, and upper trunk. From an ophthalmic perspective, a PG may be located on the eyelids, conjunctiva or rarely on the cornea. We present a case of surgically treated giant pyogenic granuloma of the upper eyelid, and we describe a techn

Detection of HHV-8 in pyogenic granuloma-like Kaposi sarcoma.

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a low-grade vascular neoplasm associated with human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) infection. Clinically, lesions commence as blue-red macules that may develop into plaques and eventually into nodules. The histologic appearance spans a broad spectrum and varies with the stage of the lesion. At each stage, KS has significant morphologic overlap with other vasoproliferative lesions. Recently, we encountered 6 KS tumors that histologically mimicked pyogenic granuloma (PG), a common benign vascular tumor of the skin that usually does not figure in the histologic differential diagnosi

Pyogenic granuloma following silicone punctal plugs: report of two cases.

PURPOSE: To report two cases of pyogenic granuloma following silicone punctal plugs. METHODS: Interventional case reports. RESULTS: The authors report two cases of pyogenic granuloma secondary to silicone punctal plugs and their lacrimal sequelae following surgical removal in one case and conservative treatment with removal of the plug alone in another. The former case developed no lacrimal sequelae while the second case developed punctal scarring. Spontaneous loss of plugs was common to both the cases. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with punctal plugs should be informed about plug-related problems

Successful treatment of pyogenic granuloma with injection of absolute ethanol.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a small, almost always solitary, sessile or pedunculated, raspberry-like vegetation of exuberant granulation tissue. Conservative treatment by techniques such as cryosurgery, laser surgery, and electrodesiccation are usually adequate, whereas excisional treatment can often result in noticeable scars. We attempted a different approach using an injection of absolute ethanol in five patients with recurrence due to inadequate cryosurgery. This therapy is less invasive than surgical excision and appears to be an alternative therapy for PG.
