Avoidance processes mediate the relationship between rumination and symptoms of complicated grief and depression following loss.

Ruminative coping has been associated with negative outcomes in bereavement. Rather than assuming it to be a problematic confrontation process, researchers have recently suggested rumination to be maladaptive through its links with avoidance processes. The main aim of this study was to examine, for the first time, whether the relationship between ruminative coping and symptoms of complicated grief and depression is mediated by avoidance processes (suppression, memory/experiential avoidance, behavioral avoidance, loss-reality avoidance). A sample of 282 adults (88% female, 12% male), bereaved o…

Rumination and avoidance as predictors of prolonged grief, depression, and posttraumatic stress in female widowed survivors of war.

This study examined independent contributions of rumination and experiential avoidance in predicting symptoms of psychological distress among female widowed survivors of war. A decade after the war in Kosovo, 100 widowed survivors of war completed measures of rumination, experiential avoidance, depression, posttraumatic stress, and prolonged grief. Results showed that both rumination and experiential avoidance significantly predicted the symptom severity of prolonged grief, depression, and posttraumatic stress. Furthermore, rumination accounted for additional variance above and beyond experien…

Expressive and defensive behavior during discourse on unresolved topics: a single case study of pathological grief.

Both psychodynamic and social-cognitive theoretical domains have control process models of behavior but with different ideas about the purpose and loci of control. This study examines expressive and defensive behaviors associated with different topics of discourse in the time-limited psychotherapy of a woman treated for pathological grief. Conceptually the study is based on a model of defensive control processes that integrates states of mind and person schemas. Theoretically derived measures of discourse topics, verbal and nonverbal defensive behaviors, emotional disclosure, and states of min…

Humanistically Universalizing Grief (HUG): Advisory Guidelines for National Hospice Bereavement Programs Standards Within the United States.

Hospice bereavement programs in the United States lack standardized guidelines, resulting in service disparities and underutilization. While many hospice bereavement programs focus on pathologizing grief, humanistic approaches remain underexplored. The purpose of this study was to assess the current structure and challenges of hospice bereavement programs and to gather coordinators' recommendations to inform the development of a foundational minimum standards for supporting healthy grieving. This quantitative study gathered data through online surveys from bereavement coordinators in Californi…

Anticipatory Grief Among Family Caregivers of Cancer Patients in Home Palliative Care: A Constructivist Grounded Theory.

Background/Objectives: Anticipatory grief is a significant phenomenon in the experience of family caregivers of individuals receiving palliative care (PC) at home, representing a complex emotional response to impending loss. Nevertheless, there is scarce research supporting an in-depth, context-sensitive understanding of caregivers' lived experiences in home settings. This study aims to develop a grounded theory that explains how family caregivers of individuals receiving PC at home experience anticipatory grief. Methods: This qualitative study used a constructivist grounded theory approach. F…

Psychometric evaluation of the prolonged grief disorder-13-revised (PG-13-R) for Indonesian bereaved adults.

This study aimed to translate and evaluate the Prolonged Grief Disorder-Revised (PG-13-R) for psychometrically sound grief instruments in Indonesia. The cross-cultural adaptation process followed the five steps outlined by Beaton and the instrument was administered to 136 bereaved adults. The value for the Kaiser-Meier-Olkin test was .96. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed the goodness-of-fit results for the model structure. The composite reliability (CR) score for factor 1 was .90, for factor 2 was .78, and for factor 3 was .85. The scale exhibited strong test-retest reliability (intra…

Complicated grief following pregnancy loss in women with autoimmune rheumatic diseases: a comparative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Women with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs) present a higher rate of obstetric adverse events including perinatal losses (PL). The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of both complicated grief (CG) following PL and resilience in women with ARDs and compare it to a control group. METHODS: We performed an analytical, comparative, cross-sectional study from November 2022 to July 2024. Women with and without an ARD diagnosis with a history of PL who completed a self-report survey including the Perinatal Grief Scale (PGS) and the Wagnild and Young Resilience Scale (RS) w…

Understanding the complexity of suicide loss: PTSD, complex PTSD and prolonged grief disorder following suicide bereavement.

Suicide-bereaved individuals are often confronted with profound grief reactions and have an increased risk for mental health disorders. Little is known about the development of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) following a loss by suicide. This paper aims to assess the prevalence of CPTSD, PTSD, prolonged grief disorder (PGD), and depression as well as to identify sociodemographic and loss-related factors regarding their development. A total of 161 suicide loss survivors (91.3% female) completed a questionnaire, which collected symptoms of grief (TGI-SR+), PTSD, CPTSD (ITQ), and d…

Longitudinal Study of Bereavement Outcomes Among Palliative Caregivers Mourners: Psychological Profiles in Prolonged Grief and Psychopathology.

Prolonged grief (PG) is a mental health condition characterized by severe distress following a loss. This study examines the roles of attachment styles, social support, stressful life events (SLEs), and pre-existing psychopathology in predicting PG and post-bereavement psychopathology among 74 caregivers of palliative patients. Using validated assessment tools, the study employed hierarchical regression and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to identify predictors of prolonged grief and psychological outcomes over six months. Results showed that pre-existing psychopathology and…

Depression among incarcerated persons following the death of a loved one: Does social support mitigate grief?

The death of a loved one generates adverse and potentially damaging consequences for surviving family members and friends. The challenges of bereavement can be especially severe when experienced by incarcerated persons who must cope with and grieve the death while incarcerated. Yet, limited research evaluates bereavement among incarcerated persons and whether factors such as social support buffer against health-related consequences. Using data from the LoneStar Project-a study of 802 incarcerated men in Texas-we examine depressive symptoms among currently incarcerated persons with differential

Traumatic stress, depression, and non-bereavement grief following non-fatal traffic accidents: Symptom patterns and correlates.

Non-fatal traffic accidents may give rise to mental health problems, including posttraumatic stress (PTS) and depression. Clinical evidence suggests that victims may also experience grief reactions associated with the sudden changes and losses caused by such accidents. The aim of this study was to examine whether there are unique patterns of symptoms of PTS, depression, and grief among victims of non-fatal traffic accidents. We also investigated associations of emerging symptom patterns with sociodemographic variables and characteristics of the accident, and with transdiagnostic variables, inc…

A Comparative Study of Grief Severity, Executive Functions, and Social Support Following Human Vs. Companion Animal Loss.

Losing a loved one profoundly impacts social and cognitive domains, yet the loss of a companion animal (CA) is often an overlooked area of study. This research investigated whether CA loss carries the same weight as human loss by comparing grief severity, executive functions, and perceived social support. The study analyzed 307 participants from Turkey (205 human loss; 102 CA loss). Results indicated no significant differences between the two groups in terms of grief severity or perceived social support. Furthermore, analysis with executive functioning indices revealed no differences between t…

Responding to grief-related needs in older adults: protocol for a community-based matched-care trial (GriefDiff).

BACKGROUND: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) affects a significant proportion of bereaved people and may be especially burdensome in later life, when cumulative losses, health problems, and reduced social resources can hinder adjustment. Grief support is often reactive, and many older adults do not access timely, appropriate care. GriefDiff will study a differentiated, community-based model that matches intervention intensity and format to individual risk and relational needs. METHODS: GriefDiff is a mixed-methods (QUAN→QUAL) protocol. The quantitative component is a three-arm, tiered, parallel-…

Grief modular group therapy: theoretical bases and pilot study of a new bereavement intervention programme in China.

Background: Bereavement is a major life stressor, with millions of Chinese individuals experiencing grief each year. Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are prevalent among bereaved people in China, yet culturally appropriate interventions are scarce. Existing Western-based protocols often showed limited cross-cultural applicability when implemented in the Chinese context, highlighting the need for evidence-based, culturally adapted interventions. Objective: This study aimed to introduce and evaluate the effectiveness of a newly developed structured Grief Mod…
