This study investigates the interaction between histamine and the adenylate cyclase systems involved in the secretion of amylase from the guinea-pig pancreatic lobules. Histamine increased amylase release, reaching a maximum response at 10(-5) M. BACKGROUND: In the guinea pig, depleting hepatic glutathione before inhaling subanesthetic 0.1% halothane increases covalent binding of halothane biotransformation intermediates to hepatic protein and potentiates resultant liver injury. Because inhalation of a higher concentration of halothane is known to produce greater levels of covalent binding than with subanesthetic halothane, this study was undertaken with 0.25-1.0% halothane concentrations to further examine glutathione depletion as an etiology for halothane hepatitis.

Frontal encephaloceles are common in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Seventeen cases collected over 7 years are reported. Eleven frontal (sincipital) encephaloceles were repaired successfully via an extracranial approach. The research described in this paper allowed the authors to follow the acceptance of new information by villagers in nine localities in Mali. This study examined the effect of varying rearing and testing conditions on guinea pig aggression, courting behavior, endocrine responses and body weight. The right endolymphatic sac and duct were obliterated through an extradural posterior fossa approach. The effects of palytoxin (PTX) on airway smooth muscle were investigated in opened rings of guinea pig trachea. Concentrations of PTX from 10 pM to 100 nM caused contractions of tracheal strips, with maximal contractions approximately 80% of those in response to 120 mM potassium. Experimental sensitization of guinea pigs with 6 azo and anthraquinone dyes used frequently as disperse dyes for fabrics (stockings, pantyhose) revealed that the blue dyes were moderate sensitizers while the red, yellow and orange dyes were only weak ones. This was found to be in contrast with the order based on the frequency of observed allergic sensitization, which showed the yellow and orange dyes at the top of the list and the blue dyes at the bottom.
