Evoked potential variation in schizophrenic subgroups.

Unmedicated chronic schizophrenic inpatients and nonpsychotic controls were tested in a paradigm designed to elicit habituated event-related potentials (ERPs) to auditory stimuli. Analysis of Variance of the ERP components recorded at bilateral frontal (F1 and F2) and temporal (T3 and T4) scalp leads revealed significant decreases in N1 component amplitudes in both frontal leads in the schizophrenic subjects. P2 and N2 amplitudes also tended to be smaller at frontal leads in the schizophrenic subjects, but these differences were not found to be statistically significant overall. The schizophre

Hyperresponsiveness to stress: differential effects of prenatal ethanol on males and females.

In this study we investigated the hypothesis that pituitary-adrenal response inhibition is compromised in animals prenatally exposed to ethanol. In the first experiment, we examined whether opportunity to perform a consummatory response reduces the adrenocortical response to a novel test cage. Animals were water deprived for 24 hr and tested in one of three conditions: (a) removed from home cage, blood sample obtained immediately; (b) placed into empty novel cage, blood sample obtained 30 min later; (c) placed into novel cage with water available, blood sample obtained 30 min later. All animal

Behavioral, neurochemical and physiological effects of repeated exposures to subsymptomatic levels of the anticholinesterase, soman.

The present experiments were designed to study behavioral, neurochemical and physiological effects of repeated exposure to subsymptomatic levels of the anticholinesterase, soman. Sprague-Dawley rats were placed on a soman regimen of 35 micrograms kg-1 (0.3 log10 units below the LD50) which consisted of daily injections SC for the first three days, followed by the same dose three times per week for a total of 11 injections (22 days). There were no significant differences in pretreatment baselines between soman-treated and saline control animals for any of the variables measured. Some basic phys

Impaired neural habituation to neutral faces in families genetically enriched for social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is an incapacitating disorder running in families. Previous work associated social fearfulness with a failure to habituate, but the habituation response to neutral faces has, as of yet, not been investigated in patients with SAD and their family members concurrently. Here, we examined whether impaired habituation to neutral faces is a putative neurobiological endophenotype of SAD by using data from the multiplex and multigenerational Leiden Family Lab study on SAD. METHODS: Participants (n = 110; age, 9.2 - 61.5 years) performed a habituation paradigm

Reduced electrophysiological habituation to novelty after trauma reflects heightened salience network detection.

BACKGROUND: Event-Related Potential (ERP) studies of PTSD have reported enhanced P3 amplitudes in response to trauma-related stimuli that are less likely to habituate over time. METHODS: In the present study, we compared ERPs to the first and last half of an auditory novelty oddball task using neutral (trauma-unrelated) stimuli. Participants were 59 young students who were: trauma-exposed with "Probable PTSD", trauma-exposed without PTSD, or non-traumatized controls. RESULTS: Reduced P3 amplitudes were observed for the last half of the trials for the entire sample, but this habituation was l

Cognitive training modifies frequency EEG bands and neuropsychological measures in Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RS) is a childhood neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a primary disturbance in neuronal development. Neurological abnormalities in RS are reflected in several behavioral and cognitive impairments such as stereotypies, loss of speech and hand skills, gait apraxia, irregular breathing with hyperventilation while awake, and frequent seizures. Cognitive training can enhance both neuropsychological and neurophysiological parameters. The aim of this study was to investigate whether behaviors and brain activity were modified by training in RS. The modifications were assessed

Effects of tic suppression: ability to suppress, rebound, negative reinforcement, and habituation to the premonitory urge.

The comprehensive behavioral intervention for tics (CBIT) represents a safe, effective non-pharmacological treatment for Tourette's disorder that remains underutilized as a treatment option. Contributing factors include the perceived negative consequences of tic suppression and the lack of a means through which suppression results in symptom improvement. Participants (n = 12) included youth ages 10-17 years with moderate-to-marked tic severity and noticeable premonitory urges who met Tourette's or chronic tic disorder criteria. Tic frequency and urge rating data were collected during an altern

Mirror exposure in women with bulimic symptoms: how do thoughts and emotions change in body image treatment?

Mirror exposure is an efficient treatment for body image problems in eating disorders. Although habituation processes and cognitive changes are postulated to be underlying mechanisms, evidence is scarce, especially during repeated mirror exposure treatment. Fourteen participants with eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS) and five with bulimia nervosa (BN) composed the bulimic group (BG), and 19 healthy women without any mental disorder composed the healthy controls group (HC). The participants were treated by four standardized mirror exposure sessions. Subjective distress was assess

Acoustics of clear speech: effect of instruction.

PURPOSE: This study investigated how different instructions for eliciting clear speech affected selected acoustic measures of speech. METHOD: Twelve speakers were audio-recorded reading 18 different sentences from the Assessment of Intelligibility of Dysarthric Speech ( Yorkston & Beukelman, 1984). Sentences were produced in habitual, clear, hearing impaired, and overenunciate conditions. A variety of acoustic measures were obtained. RESULTS: Relative to habitual, the clear, hearing impaired, and overenunciate conditions were associated with different magnitudes of acoustic change for measur

Interoceptive fear conditioning and panic disorder: the role of conditioned stimulus-unconditioned stimulus predictability.

Interoceptive fear conditioning is at the core of contemporary behavioral accounts of panic disorder. Yet, to date only one study has attempted to evaluate interoceptive fear conditioning in humans (see Acheson, Forsyth, Prenoveau, & Bouton, 2007). That study used brief (physiologically inert) and longer-duration (panicogenic) inhalations of 20% CO(2)-enriched air as an interoceptive conditioned (CS) and unconditioned (US) stimulus and evaluated fear learning in three conditions: CS only, CS-US paired, and CS-US unpaired. Results showed fear conditioning in the paired condition, and fearful re

Octopamine and serotonin have opposite effects on antipredator behavior in the orb-weaving spider, Larinioides cornutus.

In this study, we experimentally elevated levels of octopamine and serotonin in an orb-weaving spider, and observed the effects on the antipredator behavior thanatosis (death feigning), activity level, and running speed. We found that octopamine significantly shortened the duration of thanatosis, and its effect wore off over 24 h. We also found that serotonin significantly lengthened thanatosis, but in this case, the effect persisted for over 24 h. Neither octopamine nor serotonin affected the general activity or running speed of the spiders. To our knowledge, this is the first study to direct

Time-dependent behavioral recovery after pneumococcal meningitis in rats.

Alterations in hippocampus frequently occur following bacterial meningitis, despite antibiotic treatment. We investigated the cognitive performance in rats submitted to bacterial meningitis after 10, 30, and 60 days. To this aim, we utilized male Wistar rats submitted to either sham (control) or meningitis by Streptococcus pneumoniae, and followed by the initiation of the antibiotic treatment at 16 h after inoculation. The animals underwent six behavioral tasks 10, 30 and 60 days after surgery. We demonstrated that some of the learning and memory impairment, demonstrated 10 days after the indu

Impairment of novelty detection in mice targeted for the Chl1 gene.

A deficit in cell adhesion molecules including the human Chl1 (close homologue of the L1 cell adhesion molecule) gene may cause impairment of cognitive processes. Aberrant connectivity in the CA3 region of the hippocampus has been reported in mice lacking the CHL1 protein after Chl1 gene targeting. Previous studies have observed a deficit in the processing of novel information by CHL1-deficient mice. We investigated deficits in spatial discrimination and object discrimination in three groups of mice--Chl1(+/+), Chl1(+/-) and Chl1(-/-)--performing spatial and object novelty tasks. The results i

Habituation and short-term repeatability of thermal testing in healthy human subjects and patients with chronic non-neuropathic pain.

We investigated habituation effects during thermal quantitative sensory testing (tQST) using 8 repetitive measurements for thermal detection and pain thresholds. The same measurements were repeated two days later. 39 healthy subjects and 36 patients with chronic non-neuropathic pain syndromes (migraine, tension-type headache, non-radicular back pain) were enrolled. The pain intensity was assessed using an 11-point (0-10) numerical rating scale. Measurements correlated significantly over the two days in both groups (r=0.41...0.62). Warm detection (WDT) and heat pain threshold (HPT) revealed no

Sensitization and habituation of AMH and C-fiber related percepts of repetitive radiant heat stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Pain perception involves neuronal plasticity at peripheral and central stages, resulting in sensitization or habituation, depending on intensity and temporal features of stimulation. Concurrent assessment of perceptual change over different time spans is therefore important for understanding the dynamics of pain processing. METHODS: A new psychophysical procedure was established to assess sensitization and habituation during repetitive radiant heat stimulation. Short-term perceptual change (<1 min) during trials with 10 stimuli applied at 3 frequencies (0.2-0.6-1.8 Hz) and 3 intens

Correlation between cataleptic freezing and prepulse inhibition of the startle reflex in rats.

GC rats, bred for a predisposition to cataleptic freezing, were found to show a significant negative correlation between the duration of freezing and the level of prepulse inhibition of the startle reflex. In addition, a group of GC rats characterized by increased "nervousness" also showed a negative correlation between the duration of freezing and the extent of habituation of the startle reflex. These correlations were not seen in Wistar rats. Since decreases in the level of prepulse inhibition and habituation of the startle reflex are regarded as characteristic of schizophrenia, it is sugges

The Na,K pump regulates decreases in the cholinosensitivity of neurons in the common snail to a cellular analog of habituation: the role of cellular calcium.

The effects of the Na,K pump inhibitor ouabain on the depth of depression of cholinosensitivity of defensive behavior command neurons LPa2, LPa3, RPa3, and RPa2 were studied in the common snail using a cellular analog of habituation; the role of intracellular Ca2+ in these effects was analyzed. Integral acetylcholine-evoked transmembrane currents (ACh currents) were recorded by two-electrode membrane voltage clamping. In one group of neurons, extracellular application of ouabain (0.1 mM) by addition to the bathing solution evoked increases in the depression of the ACh current evoked by rhythmi

Startle responses in hereditary hyperekplexia.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hereditary hyperekplexia have excessive startle responses that are accompanied by transient stiffness and also continuous stiffness in infancy. A point of mutation has been identified for the major form of hereditary hyperekplexia in the gene encoding the alpha 1 subunit of the glycine receptor. OBJECTIVE: To measure startle reflexes and autonomic responses in the major form of hereditary hyperekplexia in the original Dutch pedigree. DESIGN: Startle reflexes and autonomic responses were examined by administering 3 series of 20 auditory stimuli at intervals of 10 sec

The role of negative self-statements during exposure in vivo. A process study of eight panic disorder patients with agoraphobia.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pattern of cognitive change, and in particular the role of negative self-statements, in relation to improvement during an in vivo exposure treatment. Eight panic disordered patients with agoraphobia, of whom 4 were most and 4 were least improved on a composite measure, were exposed to standardized agoraphobic situations. During the exposure, heart rate, self-statements, and subjective anxiety were registered throughout the sessions. Fixed criteria were set for habituation of heart rate and reduction of subjective anxiety within a session. Results s
