Hair analysis comprises the determination of minerals, trace elements and drugs. It is applied in Germany with increasing frequency in the recently established field of environmental medicine for biological monitoring of the internal metal/metalloid exposure. Five men (average age 35 years) suffering from the sequelae of hair implants were examined in the course of claims for legal compensation. Polyether amide hair fibres had been implanted, 1000 per patient and session. In all cases the improved implantation technique with a fine needle and subcutaneous knotting had been used in a total of three institutions. We present a 59-year old male patient, who had small plant cylinders 1-2 mm in length adhering to the hair shafts and easily moved up and down along them. We found hair casts together with lichen ruber follicularis and pseudopelade of the Brocq type. The presence of hair casts is often misdiagnosed as pediculosis capitis, piedra alba or trichorrhexis nodosa. The case report and the literature are discussed.

A mouse tyrosinase minigene, mg-Tyrs-J, in which genomic 5' noncoding flanking sequence was fused to a mouse tyrosinase cDNA, was introduced into fertilized eggs of BALB/c albino mice. Six transformed mice that exhibited brown agouti hair with some variations in the intensity of pigmentation were obtained. By crossing the founder mice with BALB/c albino mice, transgenic lines and sublines were established. Hair transplant surgery is a highly successful procedure for improving alopecia. However, this procedure is not without its potential risks and complications. A case of a large keloidal scar following hair transplantation is presented. Those performing hair transplant surgery should be aware of this significant potential complication, especially in Black and Oriental individuals, who are more prone to keloid formation.

17 cases of epidermoid cysts with vellus hairs in their lumen are reported. The clinical diagnosis was usually cysts. In 12 cases the lesions were solitary and in 5 they were multiple, small and closely set. Microscopically, the findings of the wall were those of the epidermoid cyst containing in their lumen hair shafts of lanugo size. The solitary variety of these cysts can be considered as the solitary counterpart of the eruptive vellus hair cyst. Problems of differential diagnosis are discussed.

We report 20 girls who experienced episodes of unconsciousness while standing for hair grooming. The episodes were syncopal in character, electroencephalograms were normal in most cases, and at least 11 of the 20 had definite episodes of syncope in other circumstances. A number of these girls underwent extensive diagnostic testing. We consider this a form of situational or reflex syncope, perhaps related to orthostatic hypotension, the recognition of which may spare unnecessary diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

A careful history and examination of shed hairs will reveal the etiology of most alopecias due to systemic processes. Telogen effluvium is preceded by a severe systemic stress occurring at least two months prior to the loss of normal club hairs. Most other causes of hair loss involve damage to the hair follicle, which leads to the shedding of dystrophic, brittle anagen hairs. A history of drug ingestion or nutritional compromise or concurrent symptoms suggestive of a genetic, endocrinologic, collagen vascular, or infectious etiology will lead to an accurate diagnosis.

From Orentreich's initial studies of the donor and recipient dominance of disease and of dermatologic conditions and his translation of those observations into punch-graft hair transplantation, a number of innovations in hair replacement have occurred. Minoxidil, a potent peripheral vasodilator used orally for refractory hypertension, has produced hypertrichosis. To determine the efficacy and safety of 1% or 5% topical minoxidil for the stimulation of scalp hair regrowth, we studied fifteen normotensive patients, five with androgenic alopecia and ten with alopecia areata diagnosed clinically and by biopsy, for 12 months. Florid scalp hair regrowth following the depilatory effects of both whole cranial radiotherapy and cytotoxic chemotherapy is described in a patient who simultaneously exhibited acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa in the head and neck region. The regrowth of more youthful and more senile scalp hair following cranial radiotherapy are exemplified in two further case reports.
