Bilateral absence of the ulna and ulnar rays in twin female infants are described as a manifestation of the split hand--split foot deformity (ectrodactyly). Family history revealed the father had a unilateral split hand. Given the wide variability of expression of this disorder and the availability of prenatal diagnosis, there is a need for obstetricians and pediatricians to recognize parents with this malformation and appreciate the potential for severely affected offspring.

A 46-year-old man presented to the surgery outpatient clinic with an ulcer on top of his left foot. He had previously been diagnosed with basal cell naevus syndrome but had withdrawn from follow-up. His foot showed a deep ulcerating defect accompanied by profound necrosis extending to the metatarsophalangeal joints. There was a nodular skin defect over the first metatarsophalangeal joint, which was shown by histopathology to be a basal cell carcinoma, and the ulcer was bordered by a raised wall. Further physical examination revealed more than 200 dermal lesions which were identified by the der

BACKGROUND: Deficient endogenous pain modulation has been implicated in the development and exacerbation of chronic orofacial pain. To date, relatively little is known regarding the function of the endogenous pain modulation in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). This case-control study investigated endogenous pain modulation in women with BMS.
METHODS: Conditioned pain modulation (CPM) was assessed upon temporal summation (TSP) of thermal pain. Forty female subjects, 20 BMS patients and 20 age-matched control subjects, were included in a 2 session-protocol. Mechanical and thermal pai

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a genetically defined neurodevelopmental disorder presenting with intellectual disability associated with a specific neurocognitive profile characterized by anxiety, hypersociability, poor visuospatial skills and relatively preserved language. We have defined the lateral preference in 69 individuals (40 males and 29 females, age range 5-47 years) with WBS confirmed by molecular testing, and explored its correlation with cognition, behavior problems, the main aspects of the behavioral phenotype, and specific molecular variants (parental origin and size of the 7

The authors discuss foot abnormalities in Apert's syndrome (acrocephalo-syndactyly). Characteristic of these deformities are bilateral, mostly symmetrical syndactlys of the toes; incorrect hyperextension positions of the first toe with large toes in flexed positions; intermetatarsal synostoeses, above all between the first and second metatarsal bones; multiple synostoses in the tarsal region; bi- and monophalanges with pseudo-, delta- or arcuate epiphyses. A classification of Apert's foot is presented, using 68 examples from the literature and 12 cases treated by the authors. The calssificatio

UNLABELLED: Non-polio enteroviruses are ubiquitous viruses responsible for a wide spectrum of disease in people of all ages, although infection and illness disproportionately affect infants and young children. Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is an enteroviral clinical syndrome most frequently caused by coxsackievirus-A16 and enterovirus-A71. Since 2008, a novel coxsackievirus-A6 genotype has been associated with more severe HFMD in both children and adults, presenting with a unique constellation of findings, and whose prevalence has been increasing over the last few years. In this case report,

Split hand foot malformation (SHFM) also known as central ray deficiency, ectrodactyly and cleft hand/foot, is one of the most complex of limb malformations. SHFM can occur as an isolated malformation or in association with other malformations, as in the ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome and other autosomal dominant conditions with long bone involvement, all showing variable expressivity and reduced penetrance. The deficiency in SHFM patients can also be accompanied by other distal limb anomalies including polydactyly and/or syndactyly. This variability causes the pheno

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS) complicating antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy is not well acknowledged in the neurologic literature. We report 4 patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy that occurred while they were receiving AEDs. All patients had shoulder and hand involvement, which in 2 was bilateral, and 1 had ipsilateral foot involvement. Two patients did not respond to a change in AEDs, but all improved with a course of prednisone. One patient with phenobarbital (PB)-associated RSDS relapsed on inadvertent rechallenge with secobarbital. A review of the literature showed th

We report two sibs with features overlapping those of orofaciodigital syndrome type VI (Varadi syndrome). Both presented at birth with oculomotor abnormalities, dysmorphic facial features, and dysgenesis of the cerebellar vermis. There were minimal oral manifestations (high arched palate) in both of them and one had postaxial polydactyly of both hands and one foot. In addition, there was evidence of aplasia of the pituitary gland on MRI scan in both of them with evidence of hypopituitarism. Both responded well to hormone replacement therapy with improvement in their linear growth and mental ab

BACKGROUND: Runners with iliotibial band syndrome display symptoms similar to chronic tendinopathy and distinct gait patterns compared to healthy controls. Although altered pain processing has been demonstrated in chronic tendinopathies, central pain processing and its relationship to motor control has not been measured in iliotibial band syndrome. The purpose of this study was to examine pain sensitivity, hip strength, and gait kinematics in runners with and without iliotibial band syndrome.
METHODS: Nine female runners with iliotibial band syndrome and eight healthy controls participated. S

This review highlights the cutaneous side effects associated with the administration of chemotherapy and discusses the management of these conditions. Rapidly growing cells are the targets of chemotherapy, so the skin, hair follicles, and nail matrix are frequently affected by chemotherapy. Chemotherapy skin reactions are more likely toxic than allergic reactions. The most common cutaneous reactions are alopecia, hyperpigmentation, hand--foot syndrome, radiation recall, hypersensitivity, extravasation injuries, and nail dystrophies. While these side effects are generally not life threatening,

We report two female sibs, with severe split-hand/split-foot malformation associated with renal and genital anomalies. The patients also have severe mandibular hypoplasia and some other, minor anomalies. The relationship to the acro-renal "syndrome" in particular and to other phenotypes with similar malformations in general is discussed. Because of consanguinity in the parents, autosomal recessive inheritance seems likely. However, the presence of a septate uterus in the mother and a double collecting system in the only living sib could also suggest possible dominant inheritance with variable

The clinical aspects of Hemoglobinopathy S in children of a black family from Zair living in Belgrade are discussed in the paper. The parents and two brothers are heterozygous carriers for patologyc hemoglobines; those children had, sauf permanent anaemia, the crysis of dyspnea, cyanosis, cough, evidence of subperiosteal bone formation, associated with vitamin D deficiency. The Youngest child, girl two years of age, is homozygous with complete Sickle cell disease: hand-foot syndrome, heterotopic paravertebral hematopoetic tissue, lung infarctions, cardiomegaly, severe drepanocytic anaemia; she…

Miller-Fisher syndrome (MFS) is a rare variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) with varying incidence rates geographically. MFS is primarily diagnosed based on clinical features, such as ataxia and areflexia, although other neurological symptoms may also present. A case of MFS has been presented, characterized by complaints of ataxia, areflexia, bilateral foot and hand pain and difficulty in swallowing. In this regard, a paediatric rehabilitation approach has been adopted, utilizing outcome measures, such as the Erasmus Guillain-Barre Syndrome Respiratory Insufficiency Score-Kids, WeeFIM and

A 70-year-old woman with yellow nail syndrome and right-sided pleural effusion, lower extremity edema, and hypoalbuminemia was followed for 18 months. She reported an 8-year history of asthma. She had four children (3 boys and 1 girl). Dystrophy, changes in color and shape of nails both hands and foot, along with lower extremity edema was observed in the daughter and two of her sons. One son had asthma. The patient reported that her grandmother had similar nail abnormality and lower extremity edema. Other family members and patient's grandchildren were healthy. This report demonstrates a case

Joubert syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive condition, first described by Joubert in 1969. We present a case of Joubert syndrome from a consanguineous family in which, apart from the cerebellar vermis agenesis, ventriculomegaly, bilateral postaxial polydactyly of hands and right foot and micropenis, episodes of fetal breathing pattern with an increased respiratory rate were also demonstrated by prenatal ultrasound scan. At birth the infant showed an odd face and bilateral fleshy nodules of the tongue. He had an abnormal breathing pattern of alternating tachypnea and apnea. Cranial MRI show
