Burking a rare and distinct form of homicidal asphyxia is when the perpetrator(s) obstruct all the external respiratory orifices while simultaneously applying thoracic compression. It is historically associated with the 19th-century serial killers Burke and Hare. It is a complex form of 'complicated asphyxia' which can present significant diagnostic challenges due to its potential for subtle or overlapping postmortem findings. This report describes the autopsy and forensic investigation of a 35-year-old male victim of a suspected homicide. External examination revealed periorbital ecchymosis,

Substance use and dependence may play an essential role in the risk of reoffending by sex offenders. Research examining the influence of substance use and dependence on the criminal behaviour of psychopathic sex offenders is limited. Alcohol and drug use have been identified as factors which promote criminal behaviour and are suspected to contribute, at least partially, to the probability of reoffending. For instance, previous research showed that elevated scores on the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST) contribute to the predictability of the Hare Psychopathy Checklist - Revised (PCL-R) o

Disruption of cranial sympathetic tone leads to the symptom complex of miosis, ptosis, and hemifacial anhidrosis. It is widely believed that this phenomenon was discovered in 1869 by the Swiss ophthalmologist Johann Friedrich Horner, and as a result, the term Horner syndrome has become synonymous with the clinical presentation. However, the syndrome that would become Horner syndrome had actually been described several times before his report. François Pourfour du Petit documented the ocular effects of sympathetic trunk lesions in animal studies in 1727. Claude Bernard identified the full clini

In Canada, the emergence of vector-borne diseases may occur via international movement and subsequent establishment of vectors and pathogens, or via northward spread from endemic areas in the USA. Re-emergence of endemic vector-borne diseases may occur due to climate-driven changes to their geographic range and ecology. Lyme disease, West Nile virus (WNV), and other vector-borne diseases were identified as priority emerging non-enteric zoonoses in Canada in a prioritization exercise conducted by public health stakeholders in 2013. We review and present the state of knowledge on the public heal

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that people with psychopathic disorders lack empathy because they have deficits in processing distress cues (e.g. fearful facial expressions).
AIMS: To investigate brain function when individuals with psychopathy and a control group process facial emotion.
METHOD: Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging we compared six people scoring > or =25 on the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised and nine non-psychopathic healthy volunteers during an implicit emotion processing task using fearful, happy and neutral faces.
RESULTS: The psychopathy group

Lambda-crystallin is a composition of lens in rabbit and hare. It contains the putative NAD- or FAD-binding domain, which is named as HCDH domain in 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase. In our attempt to search for genes differentially expressed between liver cancer tissues and normal tissues, human CRYL1 (crystallin, lambda 1) was identified. It was downregulated in 58% of 60 Chinese HCC tissue samples. The putative protein encoded by CRYL1 shares 83% identity with rabbit lambda-crystallin and contains two HCDH domains. Interestingly, CRYL1 mRNA level is remarkably high in liver and kidney, while…

Brucella suis is responsible for swine brucellosis worldwide. Of the five different B. suis biovars (bv.), bv. 2 appears restricted to Europe where it is frequently isolated from wild boar and hares, can infect pigs and can cause human brucellosis. In this study, the differential gene expression profile was characterized in spleens of Eurasian wild boar naturally infected with B. suis bv. 2. Of the 20,201 genes analyzed in the microarray, 633 and 1,373 were significantly (fold change > 1.8; P < 0.01) upregulated and downregulated, respectively, in infected wild boar. The analysis was focused o…

Francisella tularensis, a small Gram-negative facultative intracellular bacterium, is the causative agent of tularaemia, a severe zoonotic disease transmitted to humans mostly by vectors such as ticks, flies and mosquitoes. The disease is endemic in many parts of the northern hemisphere. Among animals, the most affected species belong to rodents and lagomorphs, in particular hares. However, in the recent years, many cases of tularaemia among small monkeys in zoos were reported. We have developed a real-time PCR that allows to quantify F. tularensis in tissue samples. Using this method, we iden…

Trehalose-negative strains of the Pasteurella haemolytica complex have recently been transferred to a new genus, Mannheimia. This genus presently consists of five named species: M. haemolytica, M. glucosida, M. granulomatis, M. ruminalis and M. varigena. The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of these species and lesions associated with these isolates in Denmark. In all 106 M. haemolytica-like strains isolated from pathological material from cattle, sheep, pigs and hares submitted to the Danish Veterinary Laboratory between 1994 and 1998 were investigated. Phenotypic chara…

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complex and dynamic pathological condition characterized by disrupted lipid metabolism and neuroinflammatory responses, posing significant therapeutic challenges. To address these, biomimetic bacterial outer membrane nanoparticles (BM-NPs) are designed by integrating the precise targeting capability of detoxified outer membrane vesicles (dOMVs) with the efficient drug-loading properties of liposomes. BM-NPs exhibit superior targeting efficiency toward peripheral neutrophils and macrophages, enabling spatiotemporal drug delivery via immune cells. An innovative "Tor

Whether it involves human subjects or non-human animals, basic, translational, or clinical sleep research poses significant ethical challenges for researchers and ethical committees alike. Sleep research greatly benefits from using diverse animal models, each offering unique insights into sleep control mechanisms. The fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) is a superior genetic model due to its quick generation period, large progenies, and rich genetic tools. Its well-characterized genome and ability to respond to hypnotics and stimulants make it an effective tool for studying sleep genetics and

HYPOTHESIS: If otolithiasis can be demonstrated to affect multiple species, it may be possible to identify an experimental animal for prospective study of this entity.
BACKGROUND: Otolithiasis refers to dislodged otolithic matter within the confines of the membranous labyrinth that has the potential to cause clinical symptoms. The mechanism involves separation of free-floating otoconia that can affect the hearing and balance functions of the ear. While this process is known to occur in humans, it is uncertain if other species are affected.
METHODS: The published images of 37 whole-mount spec
