Helmets for preventing injury in motorcycle riders.

BACKGROUND: Motorcycle crash victims form a high proportion of those killed or injured in road traffic crashes. Injuries to the head, following motorcycle crashes, are a common cause of severe morbidity and mortality. It seems intuitive that helmets should protect against head injuries but it has been argued that motorcycle helmet use decreases rider vision and increases neck injuries. This review will collate the current available evidence on helmets and their impact on mortality, and head, face and neck injuries following motorcycle crashes. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of wearing a mo

Drivers overtaking bicyclists: objective data on the effects of riding position, helmet use, vehicle type and apparent gender.

A naturalistic experiment used an instrumented bicycle to gather proximity data from overtaking motorists. The relationship between rider position and overtaking proximity was the opposite to that generally believed, such that the further the rider was from the edge of the road, the closer vehicles passed. Additionally, wearing a bicycle helmet led to traffic getting significantly closer when overtaking. Professional drivers of large vehicles were particularly likely to leave narrow safety margins. Finally, when the (male) experimenter wore a long wig, so that he appeared female from behind, d

Fatalities from non-use of seat belts and helmets in Greece: a nationwide appraisal. Hellenic Road Traffic Police.

It has been established that seat belt use by car occupants and helmet use by motorcycle riders substantially reduces the risk of serious and fatal injuries following accidents. No study, however, has evaluated the motor vehicle deaths that could be prevented in Greece by general use of these devices, even though this country has the highest mortality from motor vehicle accidents in the European Union. We have estimated the odds ratios (OR) for death rather than injury in a motor vehicle accident by seat belt use among occupants of passenger cars or helmet use among motorcycle riders, using a

Bicycle helmets in Israel: observed change in usage following a nationwide campaign.

Bicycle-related head injuries are an important cause of injury and death among bicycle riders. The use of bicycle helmets could reduce the rate of serious head trauma among bicyclists involved in accidents. A nationwide survey was conducted in Israel to determine the usage of such helmets. This survey preceded a media campaign encouraging the use of bicycle helmets. A second survey compared the rates of helmet usage following the media campaign with those rates prior to the campaign. A modest but significant increase in the use of bicycle helmets was observed. In order to further increase this

Tympanic membrane injury in welders: is prevention neglected?

Injury to the ear in welders is a recognized but poorly documented entity. Five cases are described to demonstrate a spectrum of severity of injury, ranging from minor burns to tympanic membrane perforation requiring myringoplasty. Welders are most at risk when working overhead, in cramped conditions or adjacent to other welders. Conventional safety helmets offer inadequate protection to the ears and it is recommended that insert ear plugs should be offered to all workers at risk, in addition to safer working practices. An increased awareness of these risks among occupational physicians, welde

Accidents in equestrian sports.

In a five-year study, 160 accidents occurred among 46,351 six-through 21-year-olds engaged in horse activities. Of these, 130 were riding accidents, 20 were horse-related and 10 did not involve horses. Bruises and abrasions were the most frequent injuries, and the area of the body most commonly injured was the head and face. The low accident rate may result from the requirement that riders wear approved protective headgear.

The influence of ethanol intoxication on outcome of injured motorcyclists.

Previous reports have failed to demonstrate a statistically significant adverse effect of acute ethanol intoxication in the well-resuscitated trauma patient. In the present study the prevalence of acute alcohol intoxication and its effect on outcome was analyzed in a homogenous population of young, previously healthy motorcycle accident victims (N = 134). The incidence of intoxication was 25%. The intoxicated cyclists were at fault for the accident 50% more often than the nonintoxicated cyclists and were found to wear helmets one third as frequently. Furthermore, the protective effect of helme

An Analysis of Guardian Cap Use and Changes in the Concussion Rate in National Football League Preseason Practices From 2018 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory testing has shown that the Guardian Cap NXT, an aftermarket padded football helmet cover, reduces head acceleration in test dummies compared with a helmet alone. However, it is unknown whether use of the Guardian Cap NXT is associated with a reduction in concussions on the field. PURPOSE: To study the effect of Guardian Cap NXT use on the incidence of concussions in National Football League (NFL) preseason practices from 2018 to 2023. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Using data from the NFL Injury Surveillance System, concussion rates in pres

Evaluating protective helmet efficacy in work-related accident: A forensic biomechanical analysis of concussion risk from falling objects.

This study investigates the risk of head injuries, specifically concussions, from falling objects in workplace accidents. A case study focuses on a construction worker who sustained a head injury despite wearing a protective helmet. Utilizing finite element (FE) analysis, the helmet-head system was modeled to assess impact forces and head accelerations. The helmet, made of High-Density Polyethylene with a 6-point suspension system, was tested against falling objects of 332 g and 665 g. Simulations, conducted from heights of 5 to 25 m, revealed that objects weighing as little as 332 g could cau

Pediatric Fractures Associated With Riding Bicycles: A National 20-year Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Biking is a popular childhood activity with an intrinsic risk of injury. While advocacy groups have promoted protective equipment to help mitigate these risks, trends in the national health burden of fractures associated with biking in the pediatric population have not been explored in depth. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database was queried between 2001 and 2020 to identify patients aged 18 years or below with fractures presenting to US emergency departments associated with riding bicycles. The patient narratives were analyzed to exclude patients no

Helmet noninvasive ventilation compared to facemask noninvasive ventilation and high-flow nasal cannula in acute respiratory failure: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although small randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies have examined helmet noninvasive ventilation (NIV), uncertainty remains regarding its role. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the effect of helmet NIV compared to facemask NIV or high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) in acute respiratory failure. METHODS: We searched multiple databases to identify RCTs and observational studies reporting on at least one of mortality, intubation, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, NIV duration, complications or comfort with NIV therapy. We asses

Incidence of Emergency Department Visits for Electric Rental Scooters Using Detailed Ridership Data.

INTRODUCTION: Electric scooter (e-scooter) rental usage has increased exponentially around the country, expanding to more than 120 cities by the end of 2018. Early attempts to capture the safety effects of widespread adoption of this technology have been hampered by lack of accurate ridership data. Here we describe a 17-month evolution of ridership characteristics in St. Louis, Missouri, and the frequency of e-scooter rental-related injuries serious enough to require an emergency department (ED) visit over this time frame; we also provide estimates of incidence rates of injuries based on compa
