The need for epidemic intelligence.

The past decade has witnessed an unprecedented upturn in tuberculosis morbidity and outbreaks of difficult- to-treat and highly lethal multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. In the early 1990s, a national consensus developed among public health officials to define more comprehensively the problem, and in January 1993, expanded tuberculosis surveillance was implemented nationwide. Carefully selected epidemiologic and case management variables were added to the Report of Verified Case of Tuberculosis form. Information is collected on the health status and treatment of patients, including human immuno

Preventive mental health and substance abuse programs and services in managed care.

If effective preventive behavioral health services were available to the millions of Americans enrolled in managed care organizations, the public health impact could be significant. This project sought to summarize published research-based information about effective preventive interventions for mental health and substance use (tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs) shown or likely to have no negative cost impact. Fifty-four studies satisfied seven screening criteria. Their findings demonstrated that preventive behavioral health interventions appropriate for managed care settings have been evaluat

Information provision and information needs in adult survivors of childhood cancer.

BackgroundKnowledge about their past medical history is central for childhood cancer survivors to ensure informed decisions in their health management. Knowledge about information provision and information needs in this population is still scarce. We thus aimed to assess: (1) the information survivors reported to have received on disease, treatment, follow-up, and late effects; (2) their information needs in these four domains and the format in which they would like it provided; (3) the association with psychological distress and quality of life (QoL).ProcedureAs part of the Follow-up survey o

Strengthening One Health: Global Applications of the Joint Risk Assessment Operational Tool.

Risk assessment is critical for managing health threats at the human-animal-environment interface, yet sector-specific approaches can result in fragmented actions. To address this gap, the Joint Risk Assessment Operational Tool (JRA OT), an operational tool of the Tripartite Zoonoses Guide, was developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the World Organization for Animal Health. The JRA OT provides a structured framework for joint qualitative risk assessments that integrate multisectoral expertise to identify risk pathways, asses

Analysis of the security and privacy requirements of cloud-based electronic health records systems.

BACKGROUND: The Cloud Computing paradigm offers eHealth systems the opportunity to enhance the features and functionality that they offer. However, moving patients' medical information to the Cloud implies several risks in terms of the security and privacy of sensitive health records. In this paper, the risks of hosting Electronic Health Records (EHRs) on the servers of third-party Cloud service providers are reviewed. To protect the confidentiality of patient information and facilitate the process, some suggestions for health care providers are made. Moreover, security issues that Cloud servi

Family systems approaches in pediatric obesity management: a scoping review.

Family-based obesity management interventions targeting child, adolescent and parental lifestyle behaviour modifications have shown promising results. Further intervening on the family system may lead to greater improvements in obesity management outcomes due to the broader focus on family patterns and dynamics that shape behaviours and health. This review aimed to summarize the scope of pediatric obesity management interventions informed by family systems theory (FST). Medline, Embase, CINAHL and PsycInfo were searched for articles where FST was used to inform pediatric obesity management int

The Impact of Psychotropic Medications on Bone Health in Youth.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psychotropics are prescribed to youth at rapidly growing rates and may negatively impact bone health. Little awareness exists of this association among prescribing providers. Childhood and adolescence are critical times for bone development. Understanding these effects and their management is important to informed psychotropic use. RECENT FINDINGS: Through a variety of mechanisms, antidepressants, benzodiazepines, mood stabilizers, neuroleptics, and stimulants may all negatively impact pediatric bone health. This confers added risk of osteoporosis in a population already at
