Australian and Canadian clinicians' views and application of 'carbon health literacy': a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical care contributes to at least 50% of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of healthcare. This includes the 40% of healthcare that is harmful or low value, adding avoidable emissions without improving health or quality of care. Clinicians are well-placed to mitigate emissions associated with the provision of clinical care. This study aimed to explore clinicians' views on a new construct we have termed 'carbon health literacy' to understand how knowledge, skills and capacities related to the emissions of clinical care has application in clinical practice. METHODS: Qualitative …

A Broad Examination of Mental Health Literacy Among College Students in the United States.

BACKGROUND: High levels of mental health literacy (MHL) have been linked to the ability to correctly recognize certain problems as mental health issues, which then may lead to effective help-seeking behaviors. Most research on MHL has focused on a limited number of psychiatric diagnoses, using Australian samples. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate various components of MHL in a large sample of undergraduate students in the United States. METHODS: We conducted a vignette-based study with 843 undergraduate students. Six psychiatric diagnoses (and two "non-disordered" scenarios) were re…

Individual and organizational health literacies: moderating psychological distress for individuals with chronic conditions.

BACKGROUND: People with chronic conditions experience high psychological distress. METHODS: Using the National Health Survey in Australia during 2017-18, the study assessed whether and which health literacies moderated the relationship between chronic conditions and psychological distress for diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), arthritis, other musculoskeletal conditions, asthma, other chronic lower respiratory diseases and cancer. Psychological distress was regressed on chronic diseases, health literacy domains and their interactions, controlling for demogra…

Mental health literacy in Arab states of the Gulf Cooperation Council: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Mental health literacy (MHL) has been relatively neglected, despite the increase of mental health illnesses worldwide, as well as within the Middle East region. A low level of MHL may hinder public acceptance of evidence-based mental health care. AIM: This systematic review aims to identify and appraise existing research, focusing on MHL among adults in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. METHODS: A systematic search of electronic databases (PubMed, PsychInfo, and Medline) was carried out from database inception to July 2019, in order to identify peer-reviewed journal a…

A Multimetric Health Literacy Analysis of Online Information for Gluteal Augmentation With Fat Grafting.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons the number of gluteal augmentations with fat grafting, colloquially known as the "Brazilian buttock lift" (BBL), doubled from 2014 to 2018. Recent studies have demonstrated that gluteal augmentation with fat grafting has a higher mortality rate when compared with other esthetic surgeries. We hypothesize that online patient-directed information for gluteal augmentation are overly complex, written at an elevated reading grade level, with incomplete or no information regarding associated surgical risks. OBJECTIVE: T

[Individual teacher's health literacy and their safety in dealing with chronically ill pupils and emergencies].

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) is regarded as a key determinant in health promotion. The support of HL should begin as early as possible to prevent later health problems. In the school setting, teachers play an important role. Due to all-day school and inclusion efforts, teachers are increasingly faced with the health problems of pupils. At the same time, many teachers show their own significant health problems, often due to an enormous workload. OBJECTIVES: This study assesses the level of the individual teacher's HL and examines possible relationships between the individual HL of teachers…

Health literacy is independently and inversely associated with carotid artery plaques and cardiovascular risk.

AIMS: Health literacy, the degree to which individuals understand and act upon health information, may have a pivotal role in the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), with low health literacy potentially explaining poorer adherence to prevention guidelines. We investigated the associations between health literacy, ultrasound-detected carotid atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: Baseline data (cross-sectional analysis) from a randomized controlled trial, integrated within the Västerbotten Intervention Program, Northern Sweden, was used. We included 3459 individuals,…

Chinese health literacy scale for tuberculosis patients: a study on development and psychometric testing.

BACKGROUND: The role of health literacy on tuberculosis patients has not been evaluated in China, in part because few special health literacy measurements exist. METHODS: A three-step design process was used: (1) Scale construction: Based on the model of revised Bloom's taxonomy, the item-pool was drafted from a literature review, focus group discussion, and in-depth interviews. In addition, a Delphi survey was used in order to select items for inclusion in the scales; (2) Pilot study: Acceptability and clarity were tested with 60 tuberculosis patients; and (3) Psychometric testing: Validity …

Associations of health literacy with diabetic foot outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: People with diabetes have low health literacy, but the role of the latter in diabetic foot disease is unclear. AIM: To determine, through a systematic review and meta-analysis, if health literacy is associated with diabetic foot disease, its risk factors, or foot care. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus and Science Direct. All studies were screened and data extracted by two independent reviewers. Studies in English with valid and reliable measures of health literacy and published tests of association were included. Data were extracted on the assoc…

A Cross-Sectional Study of Musculoskeletal Health Literacy in Patients With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Background: Approximately 33% of Americans have inadequate health literacy, which is associated with infrequent use of preventative services, increased hospitalization and use of emergency care, and worse control of chronic diseases. In this study, the Literacy in Musculoskeletal Problems (LiMP) questionnaire was used to evaluate the prevalence of limited musculoskeletal literacy in patients undergoing carpal tunnel release (CTR), as these individuals may be at increased risk of inferior outcomes. Methods: This cross-sectional study included individuals older than or equal to 18 years of age w…

The Association Between Family Health and Proactive Health Risk Management With the Mediating Role of Health Literacy: Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Modifiable unhealthy behaviors account for over two-thirds of new cases of noncommunicable diseases. Behavioral risk factor reduction is a potentially cost-effective means to improve long-term health outcomes. Although family serves as a pivotal cornerstone for fostering and maintaining individuals' health, the associations between family health (FH) and the proactive health risk management index (PHRMI) remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to construct a comprehensive index to measure the PHRMI and examine the mediating effect of health literacy on the association between …

Digital health communication and health literacy in times of COVID-19. Planning and implementation of a special course of study in health promotion and prevention.

As a result of the corona pandemic, the amount of digital health information has increased substantially. As the quantity and diversity of information increased, so does the need for evidence based and reliable health information. In the special course of study "Health Communication", students of the Bachelors program "Health Promotion" at Fulda University of Applied Sciences are enabled to develop and disseminate evidence-based health information and preventive messages that meet the demands of the target group. Due to the corona-related university closure, the module "Digital Health Communic

Exploring adolescents' ability to appraise health information: validation of the self-report short-form Critical Health Literacy Questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents' ability to evaluate health information is an increasingly important area in public health and health promotion; however, there is a scarcity of brief, psychometrically sound self-report tools focused on adolescents' information appraisal abilities. In this study, we aim to validate a unidimensional short form of the Critical Health Literacy for Adolescents Questionnaire (CHLA-QA) domain A and to examine its convergent and known-groups validity. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among Norwegian students (N = 522; response rate 33%) aged 13-15 years old. …

Age-Related Patterns in Health Literacy and Health Information-Seeking Behavior in a Korean Population: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Health information-seeking behavior (HISB) is a critical component of personal health management. Health literacy (HL) shapes whether and how people seek health information, but its role across age groups remains underexplored. Korea's highly digitalized information environment and rapidly aging population provide an important context for examining age-group differences in HL and HISB. OBJECTIVE: This study examined age-group differences in the association of HL with 2 related stages of HISB-HISB experience and, conditional on engagement, source-based HISB type-and assessed whethe…

Behavioral pathways and psychosocial determinants of adolescent mental health: positioning nutrition health literacy as a candidate upstream target.

Adolescence is a sensitive window for both nutritional and psychological development, and mental health problems in this group are rising worldwide. Nutrition health literacy, the capacity to obtain, understand, appraise, and apply nutrition information, has been proposed as a modifiable upstream factor that may connect dietary behavior with mental health, although evidence directly linking nutrition health literacy to mental health outcomes remains scarce. This mini review therefore synthesizes recent evidence on the behavioral and psychosocial routes to adolescent mental health, and asks how…

Investigation of the Relationship Between Health Literacy and Fall-Prevention Behaviours in Older Adults.

Background/Objectives: Falls are a leading cause of morbidity and loss of independence in later life, and more than half are preventable. Health literacy has been proposed as a modifiable determinant of preventive behaviour, but the evidence rests largely on unadjusted associations and on outcomes such as fear of falling rather than on behaviour itself. This study examined how health literacy relates to fall-prevention behaviour in community-dwelling older adults, and whether that relationship holds once sociodemographic and health-related characteristics are considered. Methods: In this cross…
