The health of the workers in a rapidly developing country: effects of occupational exposure to noise and heat.

Occupational hygiene and safety have not been high on the agenda of industrial management in developing countries for a variety of reasons. This cross-sectional study was undertaken to assess the exposure to noise and heat, and to study the level of occupational hygiene practiced, at a foundry in a rapidly developing country (Dubai, United Arab Emirates). Audiometry, muscle cramps and visual acuity were measured in workers at a foundry and compared with the results from workers at a soft-drink bottling plant. Thermal stress, relative humidity, ventilation, illumination and noise levels were me

Dimensions of social inequality in the health of women in England: occupational, material and behavioural pathways.

This paper examines the role of behavioural and psychosocial risk and protective factors in explaining social inequalities in the general self-assessed health of women. Using path analysis, data from the Health Survey for England (1993) are used to demonstrate how different dimensions of social position (working conditions, general social advantage and material deprivation) have distinct pathways to ill-health. Smoking, diet, alcohol consumption, exercise, social support and job strain were all related to poorer health, but not always in the predicted direction. The effects of social position

Stress experiences of occupational therapists in mental health practice arenas: a review of the literature.

The experience of job stress and burnout in occupational therapy has received only scant attention in the literature, although occupational therapists (OTs) share a number of important characteristics with other health care professionals that leave them vulnerable to the experience of stress. In addition, this group has a number of unique personal and work-related characteristics that could serve to increase its risk profile. Little effort has been directed at delineating work-related stressors or experienced levels of stress within different practice arenas of occupational therapy, even thoug

Development and evaluation of an occupational health services programme on the prevention and control of effects of vibration.

The outline of a study in occupational health services (OHS) on the prevention and control of effects of whole-body vibration is described and preliminary results are presented here. The study comprises an inventory of current activities of occupational health services in vibration-related issues, the development of a specific OHS-programme and evaluation of this programme, mainly on process level. Results of the inventory, a questionnaire survey in occupational health services (n = 112, response 67%), show that the impact of OHS in prevention and control of adverse health effects is small. Th

Occupational disease among minority workers: a common and preventable public health problem.

1. Minority workers are overrepresented in the most hazardous jobs and, as a result, are at high risk of developing occupational diseases. 2. Due to various social and economic factors, minority workers with occupational diseases are less likely than white workers to come to health care attention and be correctly diagnosed as having an occupational disease. 3. Occupational health clinics and providers need to discuss options for treatment clearly with the client and, when appropriate, be persistent in negotiating with employers to reduce or eliminate harmful exposures, while remaining sensitiv

Occupational Medicine and Total Worker Health®: from preventing health and safety risks in the workplace to promoting health for the total well-being of the worker.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of Public Health interventions for global social and economic development. Still, the community's well-being depends on each individual's health. In addition to pandemics, health conditions can be altered by chronic degenerative diseases, aging, disabilities, and work. Personal behaviors such as poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, and drug use can also affect health and safety at work. In the last twenty years, we have witnessed rapid changes in the nature of work, workplace and workforce. I

Discrepancy between Occupational Exposure Levels and Health Risks Limits the Health Benefits of a Concentration-Oriented VOC Regulation Strategy.

Industrial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are strictly controlled worldwide. However, the gap between VOC regulation and health effects has increased owing to the complexity of characterizing deleterious species and understanding their hazards. By identifying the differences in exposure patterns among VOC-related industries, we examined occupational exposure profiles in 24 industries by analyzing 557 samples collected in breathing zones. The high-end exposure level was used to estimate aggregate health risk, and the cumulative risks for affected organs/tissues were then assessed individuall

Promoting health during the American occupation of Japan the public health section, Kyoto Military Government Team, 1945-1949.

During the American occupation of Japan (1945-1952), young public health officers from the US Army Medical Corps were posted in local US Army military government teams. These young doctors (aged 25 to 27 years), who had not absorbed the strong anti-Japanese tradition of the US military during World War II, seem to have alleviated the initial resentment felt by the Japanese toward the new governors of their homeland. The case of the Kyoto Military Government Team illustrates the Kyoto citizenry's positive view of some American-directed public health measures. The team's services helped to count

Health effects of outdoor air pollution. Part 2. Committee of the Environmental and Occupational Health Assembly of the American Thoracic Society.

Although sources of airborne lead have been reduced over the last decade, particularly with the use of lead-free gasoline, there are still relatively high levels of lead contamination in soils and the residential housing stock built before the 1970s, which pose a risk for continued direct exposure through ingestion or airborne exposure if resuspended. Neurobehavioral effects, particularly as a result of early childhood exposures, have been documented, and, because of the way lead is stored in the body, late effects can become manifest during periods of high bone turnover (e.g., pregnancy, lact

Trends in Occupational Heat-Health Research in Low-and Middle-Income Countries: A Mapping Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Extreme heat is increasingly threatening the health of workers worldwide and disproportionately impacting workers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This mapping review was conducted to characterize the existing literature and to identify key gaps in field assessments of heat stress impacts on workers in LMICs. RECENT FINDINGS: A total of 210 reports were included in the analysis. Almost two-thirds of included articles reported on studies conducted in lower-middle income countries (65%), with most reports from the South-East Asia Region (40%) and from India (30%),

Occupational heat strain among home health care workers: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Extreme heat events affect workers' health. Home health care workers face physically strenuous tasks, mobility demands, and increased workloads during heat events. Yet little is known about the extent of heat strain and the specific symptoms they experience. This study aims to examine how home health care workers in Switzerland perceive heat exposure at work and what heat-related symptoms they experience. We examine which factors are associated with perceived heat strain. METHODS: We conducted an anonymous online cross‑sectional survey of home health care workers (N = 359) in nort
