[Climate change and mental health. Position paper of a task force of the DGPPN].

Climate change and the resulting higher frequency of extreme weather events have a direct negative impact on mental health. Natural disasters are particularly associated with an increase in the prevalence of depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. Indirect consequences of climate change, such as food shortages, economic crises, violent conflicts and forced migration, additionally represent severe psychological risk and stress factors. Climate anxiety and solastalgia, the distress induced by environmental change, are new psychological syndromes in the face of the existential thre

Coordination of healthcare for transsexual persons: a multidisciplinary approach.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe the experience in Spain concerning the public healthcare for transsexual persons using a multidisciplinary approach and to review the relevant literature. Treatment includes social and psychological support, cross-hormone treatment, and sex reassignment surgeries. Although the recommendations of The World Professional Association for Transgender Health are used as guidelines, the application of these standards of care varies considerably, probably because of specific clinical and country factors. RECENT FINDINGS: The sex reassignment process is complex and requi

Community-based surveillance programs in Cameroon, Chad, Niger and the DRC: a comparative assessment of integration in humanitarian crisis contexts.

BACKGROUND: Increasing community involvement to anticipate and organize a rapid response to epidemics remains a major challenge. From 2022 to 2025, the French Red Cross, together with host national Red Cross Societies, supported the Ministries of Health in Cameroon, Chad, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in setting up community-based epidemiological surveillance (CBS). On the basis of prevention, early detection and notification of suspected cases, these programs mobilize community players trained in early warning. This article aims to contribute to the limited evidence on CBS

"I was trying to look after myself, but I really wasn't": Understanding patient's perspectives on risk factors for lower extremity amputations.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity amputations (LEAs) as a result of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) cause considerable morbidity, mortality, and burden on the healthcare system. LEAs are thought to be preventable, yet the rate of LEAs, particularly in Australia, has risen despite the availability of preventative healthcare services. Understanding patient's perspectives of risk factors for LEAs may provide valuable insight into why many LEAs occur each year. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore patient's perspectives of risk factors for LEAs as a result of T2DM. METHODS: A qualitative de

Oncological Diseases and Social Costs Considerations on Undertaken Health Policy Interventions.

The growing incidence and prevalence of civilization diseases is prompting national and transnational entities to seek instruments that would reverse epidemiological trends. Not without significance is the need to design such solutions that are going to provide an improved relation between the costs incurred to maintain health or recovery and the profit for citizens of continuing to function in good health. In its strategic documents, the European Union indicates the most important development goals in each financial perspective and the tools necessary to achieve them. In the Europe 2020 strat

Unequal ageing: the quality of life of senior citizens in the EU before and after COVID-19. A multidimensional approach.

INTRODUCTION: The ageing population presents a significant demographic and socio-economic challenge for the European Union (EU). Declining fertility rates, coupled with increasing life expectancy, have led to a growing proportion of older individuals within the population, raising concerns about their quality of life. This study aims to assess the quality of life for seniors across EU countries in the years 2015, 2019, and 2022, with a particular focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The research seeks to answer the following question: How has the quality of life among seniors in the E

Neurodegeneration and Homelessness: A Bidirectional Relationship Shaping Health and Vulnerability.

Neurodegeneration and homelessness are deeply interconnected. Many structural, environmental, and interpersonal conditions experienced during homelessness-for example, inconsistent healthcare, forced displacement, chronic stress, and trauma-can contribute to accelerated cognitive decline through multiple pathways. Related neurocognitive impairment can also increase vulnerability to homelessness. Deficits in memory, executive functioning, attention, and impulse control can make it difficult to maintain employment, manage finances, navigate social services, and sustain supportive relationships.

Out of pocket and catastrophic health expenditure in Tanzania: recent evidence on the incidence, intensity and distribution.

BACKGROUND: In most low-income countries (LICs), health is mainly financed by out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditures. However, it is claimed that this form of payment causes a massive burden on poor households. This study investigates the catastrophic impact of out-of-pocket health expenditure by estimating the levels, intensities and distribution of catastrophic health expenditure among households in Tanzania. METHODS: The study applied the Wagstaff & va-Doorslaer methodology to measure the incidence and intensity of catastrophic expenditure and the concentration index to measure the distribution

Women living in the region under an emergency command post are experiencing delays in reaching health facilities: a multi-center cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The time between seeking emergency care and receiving the first healthcare service is referred to as delays in reaching health facilities. Delay in reaching health facilities had three main sub-themes in different studies. These include (i). Availability of transportation and infrastructure, (ii). Distance from health facilities and (iii). Lack of finance for transportation. Although there are plenty of findings about maternal delays in reaching health facilities, studies do not address the delay situation of women in conflict zones all over the world. In Ethiopia, specifically,

A strategic blueprint for strengthening respiratory syncytial virus prevention among under-five children in low- and middle-income countries: Bangladesh as a model for new immunisation approaches.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of respiratory morbidity and mortality in children under five years of age, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In 2023, two RSV immunisation options, including a maternal RSV vaccine and a monoclonal antibody (mAb), became approved in several high-income countries. The World Health Organization has recently prequalified the maternal vaccine and the Gavi has committed funding for its introduction, raising the prospect of RSV vaccine availability in LMICs in the near future. This analysis thus underscores the need for co

Implementation Barriers and Facilitators of an Integrated Care Initiative Targeting Socioeconomically Vulnerable Groups.

INTRODUCTION: The incorporation of integrated care initiatives for socioeconomically vulnerable groups into standard care is rare. Insight into implementation barriers and facilitators to select strategies for further implementation and upscaling are therefore needed. DESCRIPTION: This study evaluated the implementation of an integrated care initiative adopting interprofessional collaborative practice of patient-centred care for citizens with prediabetes in the form of group consultations. RESULTS: Key barriers included insufficient involvement of citizens in the design of the group consulta

Supporting local ownership of transition processes: a key pathway to sustaining the HIV response.

Globally, an increasing number of countries have made progress towards HIV epidemic control, yet decreasing donor funding and insufficient domestic investments threaten these strides. Within this context, the global community is interested in how to successfully transition responsibility for HIV services from donor-funded programmes to local ownership within the broader healthcare system. This analysis explores how to centre local leadership in transition processes to ensure long-term sustainability of HIV programmes, including moving from external to domestic financing. Existing frameworks sho

Now, more than ever, it's time to address the neglect of female genital schistosomiasis.

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) remains a neglected sexual and reproductive health (SRH) condition, predominantly affecting women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa. Infection with Schistosoma haematobium, resulting in trapped parasite eggs in the genital tract, causes lesions that mimic sexually transmitted infections and cervical neoplasia, often leading to misdiagnosis, stigma and delayed treatment. This review summarises current developments on FGS burden, prevention, diagnostics, integration, policy, community engagement and identifies critical threats to progress. Ongoing surveys show
