The negative chronotropic control of the insula: An SEEG-based investigation.

The insula is implicated in heart rate modulation within brain-cardiac interactions, yet direct electrophysiological evidence remains limited. This study investigates dynamic insula-cardiac coupling during ictal heart rate fluctuations to elucidate the insula's role in chronotropic regulation. Patients with drug-resistant epilepsy exhibiting both insular stereoelectroencephalography coverage and ictal heart rate changes underwent simultaneous intracranial electroencephalography and electrocardiography monitoring during seizures. Phase transfer entropy (PTE) was used to analyze directed informa

Validity of Current Smartwatches for Triathlon Training: How Accurate Are Heart Rate, Distance, and Swimming Readings?

Smartwatches are one of the most relevant fitness trends of the past two decades, and they collect increasing amounts of health and movement data. The accuracy of these data may be questionable and requires further investigation. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to validate smartwatches for use in triathlon training. Ten different smartwatches were tested for accuracy in measuring heart rates, distances (via global navigation satellite systems, GNSSs), swim stroke rates and the number of swim laps in a 50 m Olympic-size pool. The optical heart rate measurement function of each smartw

Fetal loss in threatened abortion after demonstration of fetal cardiac activity in a low socioeconomic population.

This study was conducted to determine the incidence and risk factors of fetal loss in threatened abortion after ultrasonographic detection of fetal cardiac activity in a low socioeconomic population. A total of 202 women with singleton pregnancies who presented with vaginal bleeding in which fetal heart activity was ultrasonographically demonstrated between 5 and 14 weeks' gestation were included. Pregnancies with fetal abnormalities were excluded from the study. All cases were followed-up with respect to pregnancy outcomes. A total of 54 of 202 pregnancies (26.7%) resulted in fetal loss befor

Predicting Maximal Lactate Steady State from Carminatti's Shuttle Run Test in Soccer Players.

The objective of the present study was to determine the validity of Carminatti's shuttle run incremental test-T-Car derived parameters in estimating the maximal lactate steady state determined in shuttle run format. Eighteen soccer players performed a T-Car test, and several trials to determine the maximal lactate steady state. From T-Car were derived the heart rate deflection point, peak speed, maximal heart rate and parameters resulting from percentage of peak measures. The validity was accessed by Bland-Altman plots, linear regressions, and two one-sided tests of equivalence analysis. The r

The relationship of electronically monitored physical activity to blood pressure, heart rate, and the circadian blood pressure profile.

We studied how closely changes in electronically monitored physical activity are reflected in changes in blood pressure and heart rate in a group of untreated hypertensive subjects. Thirty-nine hypertensive patients (office blood pressure > 140/ 90 mm Hg) of mean age 57 +/- 10 years (mean +/-SD) wore an ambulatory blood pressure monitor and a wrist actigraph simultaneously. Both average and peak activity for 5 min before each valid blood pressure reading were determined, as was average activity for awake and sleep periods, determined by patient kept diaries. For the overall group, awake and 24

Increasing paced heart rate reduces cerebral pulsatility.

Cerebral pulsatility is a key index of cerebral haemodynamics, a central determinant of intravascular shear stress within intracranial vessels, and is associated with cerebral small vessel disease. It increases with a spontaneously falling heart rate, but the effect of altering heart rates on cerebral haemodynamics is unknown. We therefore tested whether increasing paced heart rate would reduce middle cerebral artery Gosling's pulsatility index (PI)on transcranial ultrasound, during emergency or elective implantation of a pacemaker for bradycardia. In 20 participants (14 males, mean age 78), p

Elevated Heart Rate and Survival in Children With Dilated Cardiomyopathy: A Multicenter Study From the Pediatric Cardiomyopathy Registry.

Background In adults with heart failure, elevated heart rate is associated with lower survival. We determined whether an elevated heart rate was associated with an increased risk of death or heart transplant in children with dilated cardiomyopathy. Methods and Results The study is an analysis of the Pediatric Cardiomyopathy Registry and includes baseline data, annual follow-up, and censoring events (transplant or death) in 557 children (51% male, median age 1.8 years) with dilated cardiomyopathy diagnosed between 1994 and 2011. An elevated heart rate was defined as 2 or more SDs above the mean

The role of myocardial perfusion scanning, heart rate variability and D-dimers in predicting the risk of perioperative cardiac complications after peripheral vascular surgery.

OBJECTIVES: To study the value of a number of proposed prognostic factors in prediction of the risk of perioperative cardiac events after vascular surgery. DESIGN AND METHODS: Two hundred and ninety-seven patients undergoing peripheral vascular surgery were prospectively studied. Patients underwent preoperative 24 h ambulatory electrocardiography, measurement of haemostatic variables, myocardial assessment of perfusion by dipyridamole-thallium scintigraphy and radionuclide ventriculography. The primary endpoint was cardiac death or nonfatal myocardial infarction within 30 days of surgery. A c

Elevated heart rate is associated with increased mortality and rejection in pediatric heart transplant recipients.

PURPOSE: Elevated heart rate is associated with adverse outcomes in patients with heart failure. Heart transplant recipients often have elevated heart rate; however, the long-term associations of elevated heart rate with clinical outcomes are unknown. METHODS: The records of all pediatric (≤21 years) heart transplant recipients at our institution were reviewed. Patients who died or lacked a clinic visit within 1 year following heart transplant were excluded, as were those with a permanent pacemaker. Heart rate was collected from outpatient electrocardiograms and converted to Z-scores using ag

The effect of topical ophthalmic 1% atropine on heart rate and rhythm in normal dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if topically administered ophthalmic atropine affects heart rate or rhythm in clinically normal dogs. METHODS: Two groups of 15 healthy dogs were evaluated, one consisting of dogs weighing <15 kg, the other consisting of dogs weighing >15 kg. Each dog was suited with a Holter monitor. At start time 0, dogs received one drop of ophthalmic 1% atropine solution, or one drop of sterile saline solution as a control in each eye, via random assignment. Each dog served as their own control. This procedure was repeated two more times, at 6-h intervals, for a total of three trea

The incidence of bradycardia during endoscopic third ventriculostomy.

UNLABELLED: The incidence of bradycardia during endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is unknown. In an attempt to determine that incidence, we studied 49 pediatric patients with obstructive hydrocephalus who underwent ETV during general anesthesia. The median age was 54.5 mo (range 1-108 mo) and the median weight was 12.2 kg (range 2.4-22 kg). The heart rate was measured continuously in which four stages were identified for data analysis. Stage A is the preoperative phase, stage B is 5 min before perforating the floor of the third ventricle, stage C during perforation, and stage D after perf

[Myocardial dysfunction subsequent to supraventricular tachycardia].

In a patient without a demonstrable heart disease a congestive heart failure developed during an atrioventricular tachycardia which persisted for 20 days at the rate of 180/b/m'. After conversion to sinus rhythm, by means of transesophageal pacing, a quick regression of the failure symptoms followed. The heart rate increase and the persistence of tachycardia may have determined the depletion of myocardial stores and therefore, the myocardial dysfunction responsible for the cardiac failure. In order to prevent myocardial dysfunctions, it is necessary to interrupt supraventricular tachycardias a

Perceived Self-Efficacy, Gender Roles, and Cultural Identity As Determinants of Vascular and Neurovascular Health in Métis People in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Métis people, a distinct Indigenous group in Canada, have unique culture, identity, and experiences, although they have a shared history of colonization with other Indigenous groups. Although they are actively reclaiming and revitalizing their culture, identity, and community connections, Métis people remain disproportionally burdened by chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular diseases. This study examined relationships of psychosocial factors-self-efficacy, cultural identity affiliation, and gender role responsibilities-with established cardiovascular risk indicators in Métis

Heart Rate Variability and Inflammatory Stress Response in Young African American Men: Implications for Cardiovascular Risk.

Background: African American men have a disproportionately higher incidence of and suffer greater severity and earlier death from cardiovascular disease (CVD). A common feature of many diseases, which disproportionately afflict disadvantaged African Americans, is inflammation. In particular, inflammation plays a decisive role in the pathogenesis of CVD in that persistent inflammation contributes to plaque evolution and destabilization. Adverse childhood experiences increase the risk for adult inflammatory based disease, particularly cardiovascular disease. This inflammatory burden becomes evid

Effect of electrolyte and pH changes on the sinus node pacemaking in humans.

The importance of plasma electrolytes and pH levels in determining heart rate is not yet well grounded. Hemodynamic and biochemical data were collected during 8 purely diffusive hemodialysis, which allowed changes in extracellular fluid to be achieved without eliciting notable changes in the autonomic control of heart rate. A significant heart rate increase was obtained after potassium decrease and calcium and pH increase, with no significant variations in indices of autonomic activity. Model-based computer simulations were then used to separate the effects of each ionic species and pH on sinu

Effects of calcium channel blocker benidipine-based combination therapy on target blood pressure control and cardiovascular outcome: a sub-analysis of the COPE trial.

We compared three benidipine-based regimens-that is, benidipine plus angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), β-blocker (BB) or thiazide-and found that the benidipine-BB combination was less beneficial in reducing the risk of stroke than the benidipine-thiazide combination. This sub-analysis sought to compare the effects of reaching a target blood pressure (BP) (<140/90 mm Hg) on the cardiovascular outcomes among the three benidipine-based treatment groups in the Combination Therapy of Hypertension to Prevent Cardiovascular Events trial. This sub-analysis included 3001 subjects to evaluate the achi
