Cytokines in the gastric mucosa of children with Helicobacter pylori infection.

AIM: Few studies have looked at the cytokine profile in gastric mucosa in children with Helicobacter pylori infection. This study investigated cytokines and their effects on histological abnormalities in the gastric mucosa of children with H. pylori infection. METHODS: The levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), interleukin-4 (IL-4) and IL-8 proteins were measured in biopsy specimens from the gastric antrum and corpus of children with H. pylori infection, and related to inflammatory cell infiltrations. RESULTS: The antral and corporal mucosal levels of IFN-gamma and IL-8 proteins were signif

N-acetylcysteine, a novel treatment for Helicobacter pylori infection.

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC), being both a mucolytic agent and a thiol-containing antioxidant, may affect the establishment and maintenance of H. pylori infection within the gastric mucus layer and mucosa. Agar and broth dilution susceptibility tests determined the MIC of H. pylori strain SSI to NAC. H. pylori load in SSI strain-infected C57BL mice was determined as colony forming units per gram of gastric tissue. Gastritis assessment was scored and gastric surface hydrophobicity was determined by contact angle measurement. MICs of NAC were 5 to 10 and 10 to 15 mg/ml using the agar dilution and brot

Is Helicobacter pylori infection associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria?

BACKGROUND: Chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) is one of the most frequent skin diseases, however its causes remain unknown in the vast majority of cases. There is increasing evidence for systemic effects of gastric Helicobacter pylori infection, which may result in extra gastrointestinal disorders. Although CIU can result from several causes, a possible relationship between chronic urticaria and Helicobacter pylori has been recently suggested. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in a series of patients with CIU, and measure the eff

The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in benign laryngeal disorders.

Helicobacter pylori (HP) is an accepted cause of chronic active gastritis and has a major causative role in peptic ulcers. It is a gastric carcinogen. Its role in nonulcer dyspepsia (NUD) is less clear, yet 50% of patients with NUD are infected with HP, and some recent literature demonstrates long-term improvement of symptoms following eradication. HP has been investigated in several other organ systems, but has not been investigated to any major degree in laryngeal disorders, a region that could be directly exposed to the bacterium from pharyngolaryngeal reflux. This study represents one arm

Frequency of Helicobacter pylori infection in dyspeptic patients in Libya.

OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori infection is a very common infection worldwide particularly in the developing countries. The organism plays an important role in peptic ulcer diseases. The aim of the study was to detect and correlate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori with such diseases and to evaluate the histopathological grading of gastritis. METHODS: One hundred thirty two patients of 15-83 years of age (average 38) attending the endoscopy unit at the El-Jamahiria Hospital, Binghazi, Libya, mainly complaining from epigastric pain were randomly selected. Three antral biopsies for rapid ur

[Helicobacter pylori infection--clinical aspects and indications for treatment].

Helicobacter pylori (H. p.) causes active chronic antrum gastritis in all infected patients. In a relatively small percentage complications of H. p.-gastritis including duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, giant fold gastritis, lymphocytic gastritis, autoimmune gastritis, gastric carcinoma and gastric MALT lymphoma may develop. Strongly recommended indications for eradication therapy include gastroduodenal ulcer disease, giant fold gastritis, lymphocytic gastritis, autoimmune gastritis, gastric MALT lymphoma, atrophic gastritis, corpus-predominant gastritis, post gastric cancer resection and patient

Helicobacter pylori infection in skin diseases: a critical appraisal.

More than 50% of the human population have long-term Helicobacter pylori infection, causing, in some cases, severe diseases such as peptic ulcers and stomach cancer. In the last few years several extra-gastrointestinal disorders have been associated with H. pylori infection. This review summarized the current medical literature, identified through hand searching and MEDLINE research, including our own studies, with regard to H. pylori and skin diseases. From the literature it can be seen that the role of H. pylori in skin diseases is still a controversial subject. Randomized controlled trials

Review article: an approach to Helicobacter pylori infection in the elderly.

Tobacco use causes serious public health concerns and causes many health problems like (asthma, COPD, stroke, cancer, etc.). While a number of pharmacological treatments are used to reduce tobacco use, they often have adverse effects. Fewer studies have assessed non-pharmacological treatments {Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or fish oil} to reduce tobacco use. Omega-3 fatty acids, already known for their benefits in reducing bad cholesterol, managing diabetes, and helping with fatty liver, are now being studied for their potential impact on smoking habits. We aimed to e

[Epidemiology and clinical role of childhood Helicobacter pylori infection].

Colonization of Helicobacter pylori depends on virulence factors of the organism, host factors and environmental factors. The prevalence of H. pylori differs between developing and Western developed countries, suggesting that the socioeconomic status influences the acquisition of the infection. The prevalence of Japanese children has been almost equal to that of Western countries. Although a main mode of transmission remains unclear, childhood is critical for acquisition of the infection. H. pylori causes gastritis (especially nodular gastritis) and duodenal ulcers in children but rarely gastr

Peptic diseases and Helicobacter pylori infection after pancreatogastrostomy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To investigate the correlation between peptic diseases and Helicobacter pylori after pancreatogastrostomy. Pylorus-preserving pancreatodudenectomy is associated with an increased risk of postoperative peptic diseases. They are thought to be associated with Helicobacter pylori. Little is known about the long-term effects of instillation of alkaline pancreatic juice on the gastric mucosa and Helicobacter pylori infection. METHODOLOGY: We periodically checked the histology and Helicobacter pylori infection of gastric mucosae in 16 patients who had undergone pancreatogastrostomy

Role of antigastric autoantibodies in chronic Helicobacter pylori infection.

In recent studies a significant association between H. pylori infection and antigastric autoimmunity has been reported. Antigastric autoantibodies can be found in more than 30% of infected patients. Two distinct binding patterns of these autoantibodies have been described, first at the luminal membrane of the foveolar epithelium, and second at the canaliculi membranes of the parietal cells in the body mucosa. The latter type of autoantibodies correlates with histologic and clinical parameters of gastric mucosa atrophy. The gastric H,K-ATPase, which is known to be the autoimmune target in class

[Ischemic cardiovascular diseases. Correlation with Helicobacter pylori infection].

Coronary heart disease is the primary cause of mortality in western countries. The well-established ("classical") risk factors cannot fully explain epidemiological variations of this disease. From several years infections have been linked to ischemic vascular events and recent studies pointed to the role of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a spiral Gram negative bacterium, that chronically infects human stomach and is involved in the pathogenesis of gastritis and peptic ulceration. Systematic reviews of studies have suggested the existence of a possible weakly positive association between this

Effects of Helicobacter pylori infection on Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Both Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) and Helicobacter pylori infection are major etiologic factors for peptic ulcer. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of H. pylori infection on ZES with special reference to acid secretion. Sixteen patients with ZES were selected (median age, 59 years; range, 39-66 years; M/F, 9/7), and H. pylori status, ulcer location, gastric acid secretion, serum pepsinogen (PG) I and II concentrations, and PG I/II ratio were determined. The seroprevalence of H. pylori infection was 50%, whereas active H. pylori infection was seen in only 25% of the patien

[Treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection. Whom to treat and with what?].

Actually is considered that Helicobacter pylori play a major role in the genesis of peptic ulcer. Like in the gastric and duodenal ulcer. When we demonstrate the presence of Helicobacter pylori in the gastric antrum of patients with ulcer they must receive eradication treatment. Another indication for eradication treatment are the patients with malt lymphoma or patients with endoscopical resection of gastric carcinoma. The ideal treatment is the therapy that eradicate 90% of the cases. The most effective are the triple therapies with one proton pump inhibitor with two antibiotics like amoxycil

Link between Helicobacter pylori infection and idiopathic parkinsonism.

The conventional concept for an environmental cause of idiopathic parkinsonism is an insult (e.g. neurotoxin or encephalitis), superimposed on age-related attrition of nigral dopaminergic neurons, and temporally remote from neurological diagnosis. To the contrary, we describe the fit of Helicobacter pylori. This commonest of known bacterial infections, usually acquired in childhood, persists, and has been linked with peptic ulcer/non-ulcer dyspepsia, immunosuppression and autoimmunity. Acquired immunosuppression, predisposing to auto-immunity, is assessed as a model for the pathogenesis of par
