A new model for the estimation of cell proliferation dynamics using CFSE data.

CFSE analysis of a proliferating cell population is a popular tool for the study of cell division and divisionlinked changes in cell behavior. Recently Banks et al. (2011), Luzyanina et al. (2009), Luzyanina et al. (2007), a partial differential equation (PDE) model to describe lymphocyte dynamics in a CFSE proliferation assay was proposed. We present a significant revision of this model which improves the physiological understanding of several parameters. Namely, the parameter used previously as a heuristic explanation for the dilution of CFSE dye by cell division is replaced with a more phys

Acamprosate: a prototypic neuromodulator in the treatment of alcohol dependence.

Alcoholism is one of the most prevalent substance dependence disorders in the world. Advances in research in the neurobiological mechanisms underlying alcohol dependence have identified specific neurotransmitter targets for the development of pharmacological treatments. Acamprosate, marketed under the brand name Campral, is an orally administered drug available by prescription in the U.S. and throughout much of the world for treating alcohol dependence. Its safety and efficacy have been demonstrated in numerous clinical trials worldwide. Here we provide an overview of acamprosate in the contex

The hot hand fallacy and the gambler's fallacy: two faces of subjective randomness?

The representativeness heuristic has been invoked to explain two opposing expectations--that random sequences will exhibit positive recency (the hot hand fallacy) and that they will exhibit negative recency (the gambler's fallacy). We propose alternative accounts for these two expectations: (1) The hot hand fallacy arises from the experience of characteristic positive recency in serial fluctuations in human performance. (2) The gambler's fallacy results from the experience of characteristic negative recency in sequences of natural events, akin to sampling without replacement. Experiment 1 demo

An evidence-based medicine approach to combined treatment for ADHD in children and adolescents.

Psychiatrists need to update their skills to incorporate advances in psychiatric practice and to do so "at the bedside."To this end, evidence-based medicine (EBM), which is widely used as an educational heuristic in other areas medicine and has begun to make inroad in psychiatry training programs, provides practical methods to access, evaluate, and interpret the medical literature regarding disease causation, prognosis, diagnostic tests, and treatment strategies. With respect to treatment, EBM asserts the primacy of randomized, controlled trials for demonstrating efficacy, and, in some cases, t

Urine flowing: a phenomenological study of living with a urinary catheter.

The experience of living with a long-term urinary catheter was investigated with a community-dwelling sample of 14 adults ranging in age from 35 to 95 who had worn a catheter for 6 months to 18 years. Data were obtained by audiotaped face-to-face interviews. Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology and van Manen's methodology guided the study. Living with a urinary catheter was found to be like living with the forces of flowing water. People were keenly aware of the flow of urine through their catheters, and they noticed when their bags needed emptying or when urine drainage seemed sluggish or obstructed

Collective lifestyles as the target for health promotion.

The last five years have witnessed intense debate among health researchers in Canada regarding the overlap of the health promotion and population health discourses. Meanwhile, strong currents within health promotion have attempted to move the field beyond a focus on individual behaviour towards the influence of social environments on health, although the tendency is often to fall back on individual behaviour modification as the primary lever for change. The Population Health research agenda bypasses behavioural determinants of health and explores instead social determinants. This body of knowl

An algorithm for complete enumeration of the mechanisms of supraventricular tachycardias that use multiple atrioventricular, AV nodal, and/or Mahaim pathways.

The EINTHOVEN system is a model-based expert system that interprets the cardiac rhythm from the electrocardiogram. It simulates the expected behavior of realistic semi-quantitative cardiac models constructed by heuristic rules to generate interpretations that include both text descriptions and event-by-event causal explanations in the form of ladder diagrams. The simulation has been limited by an inability to predict all possible behaviors of hearts with more than one reentrant circuit. We now describe an algorithm that overcomes this limitation. Its output has been validated by an independent

Emotional imagery in simple and social phobia: fear versus anxiety.

In a first study, phobic volunteer subjects (N = 60) reacted psychophysiologically with greater vigor to imagery of their own phobic content than to other fearful or nonaffective images. Imagery heart rate responses were largest in subjects with multiple phobias. For simple (dental) phobics, cardiac reactivity was positively correlated with reports of imagery vividness and concordant with reports of affective distress; these relationships were not observed for social (speech) phobics. In a second study, these phobic volunteers were shown to be similar on most measures to an outpatient clinical

Bipolar disorder: are there manic-prone and depressive-prone forms?

Descriptive studies from the prelithium era and lithium prophylactic studies were reviewed to look for evidence that there are manic-prone and depressive-prone subtypes of bipolar illness. The manic-prone subtype has a high ratio of manic to depressive episodes, and a depressive-prone subtype has the reverse. Although data from the prelithium era are suggestive, the evidence is insufficient to accept or reject the relevance of this hypothesis. Data from the lithium era suggest that there is a relationship between the type of index episode and future episode on placebo as well as drug. The clin

Left-digit bias in surgical decision-making for lumbar spinal stenosis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Left-digit bias is a behavioral heuristic or cognitive "shortcut" in which the leftmost digit of a number, such as patient age, disproportionately influences surgical decisions. PURPOSE: To determine if left-digit bias in patient age influences the decision to perform arthrodesis with instrumentation vs decompression in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort. PATIENT SAMPLE: Patients with an ICD-10 diagnosis of lumbar stenosis or spondylolisthesis identified in the 2017-2021 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database. OUTCOME MEAS

Reinforcement learning for chemotherapy scheduling in a stochastic tumor evolution model.

We present a Q-learning framework for optimizing chemotherapy dosing schedules in a stochastic finite-cell model of tumor evolution under dr … ity of both initial conditions and state updates, and (iii) construct simplified, symmetry-informed heuristics that approximate the full learned policy. Our results highlight the potential of model-free adaptive control strategies to steer tumor evolution away from drug resistance in the presence of biological stochasticity and information constraints.

The Birmingham mandible and midface rules: final data analysis.

Heuristics and predictor rules are a mainstay in the field of emergency medicine where the breadth of knowledge required of frontline staff can be significant. The Birmingham mandible and midface (BruMM) rules were previously developed to streamline decision making concerning plain film radiography in suspected facial fractures. Frontline clinicians within a large NHS foundation trust were asked to apply the BruMM rules to any suspected mandibular or zygomatic fracture, prompting them to consider plain film radiographs as the investigation of choice. Radiographs were then reviewed by members o…

Reframing wildlife disease management problems with decision analysis.

Contemporary wildlife disease management is complex because managers need to respond to a wide range of stakeholders, multiple uncertainties … reduce uncertainty. As a result, contemporary decision-making may be oversimplified, rely on simple heuristics, and fail to account for the broader legal, social, and economic context in which the decisions are made. Concurrently, scientific research on wildlife disease may be distant from this decision context, resulting in information that may not be direc …

Polar bears are inefficient predators of seabird eggs.

Climate-mediated sea-ice loss is disrupting the foraging ecology of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) across much of their range. As a result, there have been increased reports of polar bears foraging on seabird eggs across parts of their range. Given that polar bears have evolved to hunt seals on ice, they may not be efficient predators of seabird eggs. We investigated polar bears' foraging performance on common eider (Somateria mollissima) eggs on Mitivik Island, Nunavut, Canada to test whether bear decision-making heuristics are consistent with expectations of optimal foraging theory. Using aer…

Occupational stress and white matter integrity: a methodological perspective : Short title: White matter integrity and burnout: considerations.

Work-related stress and burnout are increasingly prevalent, yet their neural correlates remain poorly understood. Kokubun and colleagues recently reported that fractional anisotropy in the superior longitudinal fasciculus, internal capsule, and external capsule statistically links workload to cynicism in healthy adults. While the original authors acknowledged several limitations, tract-averaging, FA non-specificity, and the heuristic use of Conservation of Resources theory, we argue that their implications deserve further emphasis. Atlas-based tract averaging may obscure regional variability w

Cognitive mechanisms underlying the recall of positive relationships in social networks.

Humans are embedded in complex social networks. To utilize them, they regularly need to recall with whom they are connected. This recall is cognitively demanding and utilizes a variety of heuristic cognitive mechanisms. We empirically investigate traces of these mechanisms in the context of free and repeated recall of positive social relationships (friendships, positive interactions) within an emerging undergraduate student community ([Formula: see text] participants). Applying multinomial modeling, we study the specific sequences in which individuals recalled their peers when prompted in a re
