A series of 229 patients with urogenital carcinomas were investigated for aberrant peptide hormone activities. Serum TSH and prolactin were frequently measured in elevated levels and showed some relation to the stage of disease. Ectopic production of beta-HCG was not observed in any of the cases, thyroid and steroid hormones did not exceed the normal ranges.

To ascertain the validity of hormonal theories of human homosexuality, which are based on animal research, this article reviews psychoendocrine data on lesbian and transsexual women. Sex hormone levels were found to be normal in the majority of homosexual women, but about a third of the subjects studied had elevated androgen levels. In women with prenatal androgen excess, heterosexuality appears to be more frequent than bisexuality, and exclusive homosexuality is rare. In the past, these tumors have been considered rare. Although hepatic cell tumors are benign, reports have indicated that the onset of the disease is of a critical nature--victims are frequently subject to sudden pain, shock, and hemorrhage, and a fatality rate of 10% was recorded in the aforementioned reports. A sensitive and specific assay for human prolactin has been developed using human prolactin and antiserum distributed by the United States National Pituitary Agency. Plasma prolactin concentrations in control subjects ranged from 0-20 ng/ml. No sex difference in prolactin concentration was observed. A brisk increase in plasma prolactin levels occurred in normal subjects during the administration of chlorpromazine and thyroid stimulating hormone releasing factor (TRH). These stimulatory tests of prolactin release should therefore be useful in the assessment of hypothalamic pituitary function. B

Administration spironolactone at a dosage of 400 mg/day to healthy male volunteers for 5 days resulted in a significant rise in plasma progesterone and 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone which persisted throughout the study.
