Stroke location is not associated with return to work after first ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In prior studies, age, race, job category, disability, and cortical functions such as praxis, language, and memory have been associated with vocational outcome, but the influence of stroke location on return to work has never been critically examined. METHODS: We examined the influence of stroke location on vocational outcome in patients with clinically confirmed acute ischemic stroke from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Stroke Data Bank. RESULTS: Of 143 patients working full time at the time of first ischemic stroke, 23 patients were dead

Treatment costs and loss of work time to individuals with chronic lymphatic filariasis in rural communities in south India.

This year-round case-control study investigated treatment costs and work time loss to people affected by chronic lymphatic filariasis in two rural communities in south India. About three-quarters of the patients sought treatment for filariasis at least once and 52% of them paid for treatment, incurring a mean annual expenditure of Rs. 72 (US $2.1; range Rs. 0-1360 (US $39.0)). Doctor's fees and medicines constituted 57% and 23% of treatment costs. The proportion of people seeking treatment was smaller and treatment costs constituted a higher proportion of household income in lower income group

When adult children migrate: Intergenerational solidarity, family functioning, and subjective wellbeing among older parents left behind in rural China.

China's sustained rural-to-urban labor migration has produced a population of older parents whose adult children work at a substantial distance from the home village. We examined whether the out-migration of adult children (respondents' grown offspring who had left the household for work) was associated with family functioning and subjective well-being among older parents remaining in three rural Chinese provinces (Sichuan, Anhui, and Henan), and which intergenerational solidarity pathways accounted for those associations. We conducted a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey of 479 rural

Mold insurance: crafting coverage for a spreading problem.

Mold contamination is a growing concern for homeowners in terms of both physical health and insurance. Health experts, although they concede that exposure to mold can cause respiratory illnesses, are calling for further research into other mold-related health effects and for development of standards for mold sampling and data analysis. The insurance industry is grappling with how---and whether---to provide coverage for household damage caused by mold, while some state and federal legislators are working to pass laws regarding mold testing and insurance.

Valuing Invisible Labor: A Feminist Political Economy Analysis of the Cost and Burden of Critical Care Nursing in Low- and Lower-Middle-Income Countries.

Critical care nursing is central to intensive care delivery, yet its costs and burdens remain largely invisible in low- and lower-middle-income countries. As critical care services expand in response to epidemiological transitions and global health emergencies, economic evaluations increasingly guide policy and resource allocation. However, prevailing health economic frameworks privilege infrastructure, technology, and physician-led interventions while treating nursing labor as a fixed or residual input. Using a feminist political economy and social reproduction lens, this discursive paper arg

Who got tested and who got sick? Sociodemographic inequalities in COVID-19 testing and hospitalization among 1.48 million individuals in Sweden.

In the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, PCR testing served different purposes for individuals and for policy makers. Policy makers relied on testing for representative case numbers to track and mitigate the spread of the disease whereas individuals needed tests to protect themselves and others, or to travel or go work. Systematic differences in testing across population groups can bias case numbers, making it more difficult for policy makers to implement effective non-pharmaceutical interventions. We link records of 494 699 PCR-tests taken between 2020-07-01 and 2020-12-31 to individual

Seroprevalence and risk factors for Coxiella burnetii (Q fever) seropositivity in dairy goat farmers' households in The Netherlands, 2009-2010.

Community Q fever epidemics occurred in The Netherlands in 2007-2009, with dairy goat and dairy sheep farms as the implicated source. The aim of the study was to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors for seropositivity in dairy goat farmers and their household members living or working on these farms. Sera of 268 people living or working on 111 dairy goat farms were tested for Coxiella burnetii IgG and IgM antibodies using immunofluorescence assay. Seroprevalences in farmers, spouses and children (12-17 years) were 73.5%, 66.7%, and 57.1%, respectively. Risk factors for seropositivity

Risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection before and after the Omicron wave in a cohort of healthcare workers in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal healthcare worker (HCW) cohorts throughout the COVID-19 pandemic provide a unique opportunity to study the relative contributions of various exposures to infection risk over time. This study aimed to examine how demographic, health, occupational, household and community factors influenced the SARS-CoV-2 infection risk in a cohort of HCWs in Southeastern Ontario, Canada, during the early pandemic and the Omicron waves. We compared the contribution of these factors to infection risk and explored the implications for future epidemic preparedness and the protection of HCWs

Single Motherhood, Living Arrangements, and Time With Children in Japan.

The authors examined relationships between single parenthood and mothers' time with children in Japan. Using data from the 2011 National Survey of Households with Children (N = 1,926), they first demonstrate that time spent with children and the frequency of shared dinners are significantly lower for single mothers than for their married counterparts. For single mothers living alone, less time with children reflects long work hours and work-related stress. Single mothers coresiding with parents spend less time with children and eat dinner together less frequently than either married mothers or

Bringing it home: Couple health behavior discordance and the physiological returns to social participation in China.

OBJECTIVE: Social participation is assumed to benefit whoever engages in it. We ask whether that benefit survives a marriage in which spouses keep different health behaviors. BACKGROUND: The health implications of social participation outside the household may depend on circumstances within the marriage. Dyadic and stress perspectives suggest that behavioral differences between spouses may shape its associations with physiological health. METHOD: Using data from the 2011 and 2015 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (N = 1705 couples), we estimated Actor-Partner Interd

Intimate Partner Relationships and Gender Norms in Mali: The Scope of Cash Transfers Targeted to Men to Reduce Intimate Partner Violence.

Mali has implemented the Filets Sociaux (Jigisémèjiri) program that aims to reduce poverty through cash transfers (CTs) to predominantly male heads of household with accompanying measures. This paper reports on a qualitative study of the effects of the program on intimate partner relationships. In-depth interviews were conducted with men and women in monogamous and polygamous households. Findings revealed that the positive aspects of intimate partner relationships were communication and shared values. However, discussions around decision-making revealed male authority with limited influence by
