Epidemiology and risk factors of self-reported systemic allergic reactions to a Hymenoptera venom in beekeepers worldwide: a protocol for a systematic review of observational studies.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic allergic reaction (SAR) to a Hymenoptera venom is a potentially life-threatening disorder. The rate of SAR between beekeepers in comparison with a healthy individual is different. The risk for an SAR is particularly high in beekeepers due to their persistent or seasonal exposure to the stinging Hymenoptera. We aim to provide a critical appraisal and a synthesis of evidence-based data from epidemiological observational studies, focusing on SARs to a Hymenoptera venom and the associated risk factors for SARs in beekeepers worldwide. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Searching will in…

Role of host feeding niches and host refuges in habitat-related behaviour of Hyssopus pallidus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), a larval parasitoid of the codling moth.

Parasitoid fitness depends largely on the capability to locate a host in an ecosystem. A parasitoid of a polyphagous host might not be able to find or to access the host in all its feeding niches. This study evaluated the niche selection of Hyssopus pallidus (Askew), a larval parasitoid of Cydia pomonella (Linnaeus), at the plant level with the goal of assessing its potential for biological control on different fruit crops throughout the plant cycle. Parasitoid behaviour during host location and reproduction rate were investigated on host caterpillars actively feeding on apple, pear, apricot o

Effects of successful or unsuccessful parasitism by the solitary endoparasitoid wasp Cotesia vestalis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) on the testis development in several host moth species.

Parasitism by a parasitoid wasp alters the physiology and behavior of its host insects. This study investigated the effects of successful and unsuccessful parasitization on individual host development and testis growth in several moth species. Although the solitary koinobiont endoparasitoid wasp, Cotesia vestalis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), primarily parasitizes the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella, Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), its host range is relatively broad. Previous research confirmed successful parasitization of P. xylostella, Mythimna separata (Noctuidae), and Helicoverpa armigera ar…

New fossil genus and species from the subfamily Sigalphinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in Eocene Baltic amber with remarks on the genus Acampsohelcon Tobias, 1987.

The new peculiar genus and species, Balticampsis Belokobylskij, gen. nov. and B. inopinatus Belokobylskij, sp. nov., from the tribe Sigalphini (Acampsina) of the subfamily Sigalphinae are described and illustrated from late Eocene Baltic amber. This is the first reliable record of a fossil member of the Sigalphinae. A discussion about the taxonomic position of the genus Acampsohelcon Tobias, 1987 is provided: it was initially included in the subfamily Sigalphinae as the tribe Acampsohelconini. The other genera of the former Acampsohelconinae are separated in the subfamily Afrocampsinae status

A new species of Lepidotrigona (Hymenoptera: Apidae) from Thailand with the description of males of L. flavibasis and L. doipaensis and comments on asymmetrical genitalia in bees.

We describe Lepidotrigona satun Attasopa and Bänziger new species from southern Thailand based upon associated males and females (workers). The new species is a member of the L. ventralis species group, which is otherwise represented in Thailand only by L. flavibasis and L. doipaensis. We also describe the males of the latter two species, associated with nests from close to their type localities in northern Thailand. Lepidotrigona doipaensis Schwarz and L. flavibasis (Cockerell) had previously often been misidentified as L. ventralis (Smith), a species confirmed only from Borneo. Based upon di

Effect of Sublethal Doses of Imidacloprid on the Biological Performance of Aphid Endoparasitoid Aphidius gifuensis (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) and Influence on Its Related Gene Expression.

The integrated pest management (IPM) strategy was developed and used in combination with pesticides and beneficial biological control agents. To further develop IPM efficiency, it is important to evaluate the side effects of pesticides on biological control agents. Aphidius gifuensis is one of the most important aphid natural enemies and has been successfully used to control Myzys persicae and other aphid species. Imidacloprid (IMD) is a popular pesticide used worldwide and is highly toxic to non-target arthropods. Here, we investigated the short-term sublethal toxicity of IMD in Aphidius gifu

[Mastocytosis: an important differential diagnosis in anaphylactoid reaction to Hymenoptera sting. A case report and overview of clinical aspects, diagnosis and current therapy of mastocytosis].

A 77-year old farmer presented with a history of three severe anaphylactoid reactions after hymenoptera stings for the last three years. No sensitisation to hymenoptera venoms could be shown on allergological work-up. The serum level of tryptase however was clearly elevated (37.1 micrograms/l; normal value: < 13.5 micrograms/l). The diagnosis of systemic mastocytosis could be confirmed by bone marrow biopsy. Patients with mastocytosis are at increased risk of anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reactions. They should be educated how to avoid trigger factors and they should always carry an emergency kit…

Diagnostic outcomes and temporal changes in skin tests and specific immunoglobulin E levels following Hymenoptera sting reactions: single-center analysis of 194 patients.

Hymenoptera stings are a common occurrence worldwide, with a significant proportion of the general population experiencing at least one sting during their lifetime. The order Hymenoptera includes several species, such as honey bees, hornets, bumblebees, and yellow jackets, that cause hypersensitivity reactions. The most common form of hypersensitivity is systemic sting reaction mediated by specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) to venom components. The prevalence of systemic sting reaction in the general population is estimated to be approximately 3%, while gross local reactions are reported in 2.4-…

Range-wide genetic analysis of an endangered bumble bee (Bombus affinis, Hymenoptera: Apidae) reveals population structure, isolation by distance, and low colony abundance.

Declines in bumble bee species range and abundances are documented across multiple continents and have prompted the need for research to aid species recovery and conservation. The rusty patched bumble bee (Bombus affinis) is the first federally listed bumble bee species in North America. We conducted a range-wide population genetics study of B. affinis from across all extant conservation units to inform conservation efforts. To understand the species' vulnerability and help establish recovery targets, we examined population structure, patterns of genetic diversity, and population differentiati

Population Growth of Varroa destructor (Acari: Varroidae) in Colonies of Russian and Unselected Honey Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Stocks as Related to Numbers of Foragers With Mites.

Varroa (Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman) is an external parasite of honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) and a leading cause of colony losses worldwide. Varroa populations can be controlled with miticides, but mite-resistant stocks such as the Russian honey bee (RHB) also are available. Russian honey bee and other mite-resistant stocks limit Varroa population growth by affecting factors that contribute to mite reproduction. However, mite population growth is not entirely due to reproduction. Numbers of foragers with mites (FWM) entering and leaving hives also affect the growth of mite populat

The contact toxicity of indoxacarb and five other insecticides to Orius insidiosus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) and Aphidius colemani (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), beneficials used in the greenhouse industry.

The contact toxicity of indoxacarb, abamectin, endosulfan, insecticide soap, S-kinoprene and dimethoate to Orius insidiosus (Say) and Aphidius colemani Viereck were studied in the laboratory. These beneficials are often used in the greenhouses to manage various insect pests. Indoxacarb is slow acting and therefore, to estimate lethal dosages, observations should be continued for several days until data stabilize. Seven days after treatment, the LC50 was 0.119 g AI litre(-1) for O insidiosus adults and 0.019 g AI litre(-1) for A colemani. At that time, the recommended field concentration was 0.
