A case of tuberculoid leprosy with complete depigmentation on its active margins, in a predisposed individual to vitiligo is presented. The postulated mechanism of hypopigmentation vis-a-vis leprosy lesions is discussed in brief in the context of the presenting unusual association.

Griscelli syndrome type 2 (GS2), caused by biallelic RAB27A variants, is classically associated with hypopigmentation and life-threatening hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). However, a few patients exhibit normal pigmentation, termed GS2 sine albinism. We identified two unrelated Japanese patients with this presentation caused by compound heterozygous RAB27A variants, representing the first functionally characterized cases among Japanese patients. Functional studies were performed using RAB27A-null cell systems to evaluate the two allele pairs: p.Trp73Arg/p.Val143Ala (patient 1) and p.S…

Focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH), also known as Goltz syndrome, is a rare syndrome described in the literature. Patchy skin hypoplasia is the most evident sign. Hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, papillomas, limb defects, and orofacial manifestations have also been reported. A 12-year-old Saudi girl with unremarkable family history presented with FDH. The diagnosis was confirmed using a genetic study. Physical examination revealed asymmetrical streaks of vermiculate dermal atrophy, telangiectasia with hyperpigmentation, and hypopigmentation on the left half of the face, trunk, and bilateral ext…

It has been observed that depigmentation in vitiligo passes through two stages; patches of light brown hypopigmentation which gradually changes into milky white patches. In this work, we studied two cases of hypopigmented vitiligo regarding the melanocytes and keratinocytes' changes before and after 7 months of psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy. Skin biopsies were taken from the vitiliginous lesions before and after 7 months of PUVA therapy and were examined using haematoxylin and eosin and Masson Fontana stains, L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine reaction, immuno-histochemical stains and u…

Albinism is a disorder of hypopigmentation affecting the skin, appendages, and eyes. Ultraviolet light-induced cutaneous tumors are common in patients with albinism due to reduced or absent protection from melanin. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the number one skin tumor seen in patients who are albinos. Although nonmelanomatous skin cancers are more common in patients with albinism, dysplastic nevus and melanoma present a greater diagnostic challenge in this group because of their hypopigmented appearance. We report 2 cases of cutaneous malignancies in patients who had oculocutaneous albini…

Thirteen patients with hypopigmentation of the skin characteristic of hypomelanosis of Ito, and with developmental disabilities or structural malformations, or both, were examined at our center. Eight were found to have abnormal karyotypes in lymphocytes, fibroblasts, or both. No single clinical feature was predictive of chromosome imbalance in this group of patients. Cytogenetic findings included a balanced de novo X-autosome translocation; ring 10; 45,X/46,X,+ring; mosaic del 13q11 (fibroblasts); mosaic triploidy (fibroblasts); mosaic tetrasomy 12p (fibroblasts); mosaic apparently balanced 1…

INTRODUCTION: Koleen-De Vries syndrome (KDVS) is a rare genetic condition characterized by typical facial features, intellectual disability, cardiac and renal diseases, and ophthalmic manifestations. The syndrome is known to be caused by a microdeletion in the 17q21.31 region, involving multiple genes, including the KANSL1 gene.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 9-year-old boy with no family history of ophthalmic syndromes. The patient exhibited bilateral hypopigmented iris and unilateral choroidal and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) hypopigmentation.
DISCUSSION: The presence of o…

Earlobe keloids, although not a life-threatening disease, can severely impair a patient's quality of life. Contact cryosurgery is a safe tec … e 18-month follow-up period, there was no evidence of bleeding, infection, recurrence, or permanent hypopigmentation. Two patients had a transient hypopigmentation which disappeared 2 months after the final session of contact cryosurgery. The results of our study highly encourage the use of contact cryosurgery which has tolerable side effects and high safety.

Pityriasis alba (PA) is a localized hypopigmented disorder of childhood with many existing clinical variants. It is more often detected in i … enesis of this disorder. The end result of this mechanism is inappropriate melanosis manifesting as hypopigmentation. It must be differentiated from other disorders of hypopigmentation, such as pityriasis versicolor alba, vitiligo, nevus depigmentosus, and nevus anemicus. Alleviation of the various risk factors via patient education on proper skin care and hygiene …

Tyrosinase is a key enzyme in melanin biosynthesis. Activators of tyrosinase with stimulatory effects on melanogenesis are beneficial for the treatment of hypopigmentation diseases. In the present study, mushroom tyrosinase activity assay was performed to screen tyrosinase activators from traditional Chinese herbs. Four components from Radix Polygoni multiflori were tested. The most active compound, 2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-beta-D-glucoside (THSG), was found to be a significant tyrosinase activator. The maximal activation was 126% at a concentration of 75.0 microg/mL. The three anthra…
