The effect of measurement error on the positive predictive value of PSW methods for SLD identification: How buffer zones dispel the illusion of inaccuracy.

Patterns of Strengths and Weaknesses (PSW) methods are widely used for identifying specific learning disabilities (SLDs). Several researchers, however, have reported that the diagnostic accuracy of PSW methods is unacceptably low when strict thresholds were used to identify students with SLDs. We believe these findings give a misleading impression of the magnitude of the diagnostic errors that are likely to arise in PSW assessments. In a simulation study of 10 million cases using a simplified PSW method for demonstration, most of what have been called diagnostic errors were cases in which obse

Altered effective connectivity between lateral occipital cortex and superior parietal lobule contributes to manipulability-related modulation of the Ebbinghaus illusion.

Action and perception interact reciprocally in our daily life. Previous studies have found that object manipulability can affect visual perceptual processing. Here we probed the neural mechanisms underlying the manipulability-related modulation effect using the well-known Ebbinghaus illusion with the central circle replaced by a high (i.e., a basketball) or a low (i.e., a watermelon) manipulable object. Participants (N = 30) were required to adjust the size of a comparison circle to match that of the central object in the Ebbinghaus configuration. The results showed that the perceived illusion

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Visual Illusion Effect According to Sensory Phenotypes in Patients With Spinal Cord Injury and Neuropathic Pain.

Treatment of neuropathic pain (NP) in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) remains a major challenge. The aim of the present study is to investigate if the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with visual illusion, following a previously published protocol, has differential effects on pain-related sensory symptoms according to sensory phenotypes profiles. One hundred and thirty SCI patients with NP participated in this open-label trial. Sixty-five patients were given a daily 20-minutes combined treatment of transcranial direct current stimulation and visual illusion for

Who Do I (Not) Ask to Play my Lottery? Effects of Perceived Positive and Negative Agency, Communion and Luck on the Illusion of Control by Proxy.

The paper investigates the illusion of control by proxy in games of chance - an attempt to exert control by assigning it to others who are p … er generator in a task consisting of obtaining lottery numbers. We obtained consistent preventative illusions of control (i.e. avoidance of proxies with strictly negative qualities, as well as proxies with positive communion but negative agency), however we observed indifference between proxies with positive qualities and random number generators.

Visual illusion in male self-assessment of penile dimensions: a clinical study on penile length perception bias between flaccid and erect states.

BACKGROUND: Despite the significance of penile dimensions in male health and self-perception, there is a lack of population-specific references and understanding of self-assessment biases. AIM: To establish population-specific references and investigate self-assessment biases in penile dimensions. METHODS: A single-center cross-sectional study (2024-2025) prospectively enrolled 342 Chinese males. Standardized measurements of flaccid and stretched lengths were performed by a trained andrologist. Participants were asked to report their perceived erect penile length, and stratified into three m

Is restoration of vertebral body height after vertebral body fractures and minimally-invasive dorsal stabilization with polyaxial pedicle screws just an illusion?

INTRODUCTION: Thoracolumbar spine fractures often require surgical treatment as they are associated with spinal instability. Optimal operative techniques and treatment are discussed controversially. Aim of our prospective cohort study was to investigate the sagittal alignment after reduction, the secondary loss of reduction and the subjective outcome as well as the causal correlation of these parameters after minimally invasive stabilization of thoracic and lumbar fractures with polyaxial pedicle screws. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a single-center study, a total of 78 patients with an average a

Kinesthetic illusion induced by visual stimulation influences sensorimotor event-related desynchronization in stroke patients with severe upper-limb paralysis: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Repetition of motor imagery improves the motor function of patients with stroke. However, patients who develop severe upper-limb paralysis after chronic stroke often have an impaired ability to induce motor imagery. We have developed a method to passively induce kinesthetic perception using visual stimulation (kinesthetic illusion induced by visual stimulation [KINVIS]). OBJECTIVE: This pilot study further investigated the effectiveness of KINVIS in improving the induction of kinesthetic motor imagery in patients with severe upper-limb paralysis after stroke. METHODS: Twenty part

"I can't tell whether it's my hand": a pilot study of the neurophenomenology of body representation during the rubber hand illusion in trauma-related disorders.

BACKGROUND: Early traumatic experiences are thought to be causal factors in the development of trauma-related dissociative experiences, including depersonalization and derealization. The rubber hand illusion (RHI), a well-known paradigm that measures multi-sensorial integration of a rubber hand into one's own body representation, has been used to investigate alterations in the experience of body ownership and of body representation. Critically, however, it has never been studied in individuals with trauma-related disorders. OBJECTIVE: To investigate body representation distortions occurring i

Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC for peritoneal metastasis. Justified hope or desperate illusion? Fifteen years of experience from a Greek Peritoneal Surface Malignancy center.

PURPOSE: Peritoneal spread of neoplastic diseases is considered a fatal condition with a dismal prognosis. Few therapeutic options were offered to these patients and surgery had only palliative character. However, advances in surgical techniques and new drugs development, have changed the management of this terminal stage disease. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) followed by hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), has been proposed as a promising alternative to palliative surgery and systemic chemotherapy, since 1980s. Many changes through all these years have refined the technique and s

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the posterior parietal cortex reduces the onset time to the rubber hand illusion and increases the body ownership.

The body ownership induced by the rubber hand illusion (RHI) has been related to a neural network involving a frontal-parietal circuit. Previous functional neuroimaging studies have demonstrated neural activation in the parietal area relative to the multisensory integration processing and to the recalibration of the felt position of body while a ventral premotor cortex activation has been linked to bodily self-attribution during the RHI. Our study aimed to investigate the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) or on the premotor cortex

Does speed equal distance over duration in perception?

If the perceived speed of a moving object equals the perceived distance traveled in perceived duration, speed perception should inherit distance illusions, unless they elicit proportional duration illusions. Three experiments systematically evaluated whether an object appears to move faster (a) along subjectively longer horizontal lines (Müller-Lyer distance illusion) and (b) around subjectively larger circles (Ebbinghaus size illusion). The predicted Müller-Lyer and Ebbinghaus speed illusions were consistently absent across absolute (Experiments 1a and 1b), binary comparative (Experiments 2a …

Temporal analysis of regional anaesthesia-induced sensorimotor dysfunction: a model for understanding phantom limb.

BACKGROUND: The peripheral deafferentation induced by regional anaesthesia (RA) results in misperception of size-shape (S) and posture (P) of the anesthetized limb. During RA, most patients seem to describe motionless 'phantom limbs' fixed in stereotyped illusory positions, suggesting that RA could unmask stable postural patterns. The question of whether movement illusions exist or not after anaesthesia needs a prospective study. This study aimed to describe the phenomenology of RA-induced kinesthetic illusions (K illusions). METHODS: We examined prospectively the body image alteration during…

Self-face recognition shares brain regions active during proprioceptive illusion in the right inferior fronto-parietal superior longitudinal fasciculus III network.

Proprioception is somatic sensation that allows us to sense and recognize position, posture, and their changes in our body parts. It pertains directly to oneself and may contribute to bodily awareness. Likewise, one's face is a symbol of oneself, so that visual self-face recognition directly contributes to the awareness of self as distinct from others. Recently, we showed that right-hemispheric dominant activity in the inferior fronto-parietal cortices, which are connected by the inferior branch of the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF III), is associated with proprioceptive illusion (awar

Illusory and veridical mapping of tactile objects in the primary somatosensory and posterior parietal cortex.

While several behavioral and neuroscience studies have explored visual, auditory, and cross-modal illusions, information about the phenomenology and neural correlates of somatosensory illusions is meager. By combining psychophysics and somatosensory evoked potentials, we explored in healthy humans the neural correlates of 2 compelling tactuo-proprioceptive illusions, namely Aristotle (1 object touching the contact area between 2 crossed fingers is perceived as 2 lateral objects) and Reverse illusions (2 lateral objects are perceived as 1 between crossed-fingers object). These illusions likely …

Model-Based Analyses for the Causal Relationship Between Post-stroke Impairments and Functional Brain Connectivity Regarding the Effects of Kinesthetic Illusion Therapy Combined With Conventional Exercise.

Aims: Therapy with kinesthetic illusion of segmental body part induced by visual stimulation (KINVIS) may allow the treatment of severe upper limb motor deficits in post-stroke patients. Herein, we investigated: (1) whether the effects of KINVIS therapy with therapeutic exercise (TherEx) on motor functions were induced through improved spasticity, (2) the relationship between resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) and motor functions before therapy, and (3) the baseline characteristics of rs-FC in patients with the possibility of improving their motor functions. Methods: Using data from

Deconstructing psychosis and misperception symptoms in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with Lewy body disease develop a variety of psychotic and misperception symptoms, including visual hallucinations and delusions, as well as 'minor hallucinations', that is, a sense of presence, passage hallucinations and visual illusions. Although these symptoms have been suggested to have common underlying mechanisms, the commonalities and differences among them have not been systematically investigated at the neural level. METHODS: Sixty-seven patients with Parkinson's disease underwent neuropsychological and behavioural assessments, volumetric MRI and 18F-fluorodeoxyglu…

Very Important Person (VIP) Syndrome: Psychological Illusion or Real Surgical Risk? A Propensity Score-Matched Cohort Study of Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy With a Surgeon Survey.

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Special treatment of very important persons (VIPs) is widely believed to cause deviation from standard care and worse outcomes, but has rarely been tested objectively, especially in surgery. We examined whether VIP status is associated with worse outcomes after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy and the burden surgeons report when operating on such patients. METHOD: In a single-centre retrospective study, 75 patients flagged as VIP among 571 men undergoing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy for non-metastatic prostate cancer were matched 1:4 to 300 controls

Risk factors for early psychosis in PD: insights from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's Disease (PD) psychosis refers to the spectrum of illusions, formed hallucinations and delusions that occur in PD. Visual hallucinations and illusions are thought to be caused by specific cognitive and higher visual function deficits and patients who develop such symptoms early in the disease course have greater rates of cognitive decline and progression to dementia. To date, no studies have investigated whether such deficits are found prior to the onset of PD psychosis. METHOD: Here we compare baseline cognitive, biomarker (structural imaging and cerebrospinal fluid) a…

No evidence for altered up- and downregulation of brain activity in visual cortex during illusory shape perception in autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may be marked by an altered balance between sensory input and prior expectations. Because many illusions rely on integrating sensory input with prior information such as spatial context, individuals with ASD may therefore be less susceptible to visual illusions than typically developing (TD) individuals. Yet empirical evidence on the matter is rather divergent, varying depending on the type of illusion, study procedure, and population. Visual illusions lead to neural activity alterations in the visual system. In the so-called Kanizsa illusion, these are likely ca…
