How awkward! Social anxiety and the perceived consequences of social blunders.

Seventy high socially anxious (HSA) and 74 low socially anxious (LSA) participants rated perceived interpersonal and emotional consequences of both (a) autobiographical social blunders recalled from their own lives and (b) imagined blunders presented in standardized hypothetical social scenarios. Ratings of participants' autobiographical blunders were also provided by research assistants who were blind to hypotheses. Results indicated that HSA participants overestimated the negative consequences of their own autobiographical blunders. These negative perceptions among HSA participants extended

Pupil Size Reflects Trial-Level Variability in Imagery Vividness During Immersive Storytelling but Not (or Hardly) Individual Differences in Trait Imagery.

Previous research has shown that the eyes' pupils are larger when imagining dark as compared to bright objects or scenes. On the basis of this, it has been claimed that pupil size is a sensitive marker of mental imagery vividness. We investigated this claim in three experiments, conducted in two countries (Norway and The Netherlands; Ntotal = 115), in which participants read, listened, or freely imagined stories that evoked a sense of darkness or brightness. In addition, self-reports of vividness were collected for each story to measure variations in imagery vividness during the experiment; an

Frontoparietal cortex and cerebellum contribution to the update of actual and mental motor performance during the day.

Actual and imagined movement speed increases from early morning until mid-afternoon. Here, we investigated the neural correlates of these daily changes. Fifteen subjects performed actual and imagined right finger opposition movement sequences at 8 am and 2 pm. Both actual and imagined movements were significantly faster at 2 pm than 8 am. In the morning, actual movements significantly activated the left primary somatosensory and motor areas, and bilaterally the cerebellum; in the afternoon activations were similar but reduced. Contrast analysis revealed greater activity in the cerebellum, the

Improving imagery rescripting treatments: Comparing an active versus passive approach.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In imagery rescripting (ImRs), aversive mental images are modified to reduce symptoms in a variety of psychological disorders. However, uniform guidelines on how to optimally implement ImRs do currently not exist. It remains unclear whether therapists should stimulate patients to imagine themselves to actively intervene within the new image, or whether they may imagine helpers to change the situation. We aimed to compare these two variants of ImRs within an analogue experimental setting. METHODS: After having watched an aversive film, one-hundred participants were r

Brain motor system function in a patient with complete spinal cord injury following extensive brain-computer interface training.

Although several features of brain motor function appear to be preserved even in chronic complete SCI, previous functional MRI (fMRI) studies have also identified significant derangements such as a strongly reduced volume of activation, a poor modulation of function and abnormal activation patterns. It might be speculated that extensive motor imagery training may serve to prevent such abnormalities. We here report on a unique patient with a complete traumatic SCI below C5 who learned to elicit electroencephalographic signals beta-bursts in the midline region upon imagination of foot movements.…

Stabilization of posture by precision touch of the index finger with rigid and flexible filaments.

Light touch of the index finger with a stationary surface at non-mechanically supportive force levels (<100 g) greatly attenuates the body sway of standing subjects. In three experiments, we evaluated the properties of finger contact and of the contacted object necessary to produce postural stabilization in subjects standing heel-to-toe with eyes closed, as well as how accurately hand position can be controlled. Experiment 1 involved finger contact with flexible filaments of different bending strengths, a flat surface, and an imagined spatial position. Contact with the flat surface was most ef

Positive episodic future thinking and its impact on the perceived performance anxiety in performing artists.

Performance anxiety is characterized by specific fears of social situations involving potentially being judged or scrutinized by others. Research on coping strategies has focused on breathing techniques, biofeedback training and the use of beta-blockers; less is known about the impact of positive episodic future thinking (i.e., the imagination of successful events in one's personal future). Given previous evidence of beneficial effects of episodic future thinking on emotional well-being, we hypothesized that positive episodic future thinking may lead to a decrease of performance anxiety in per…

Art in support of life: Caravaggio and the plague.

In the struggle with COVID-19, art offered a way to face the solitude of the lockdown. The focus of this paper is primarily on Caravaggio's … it is possible to understand his process of exploration of ancestral darkness. The author uses her imagination to reflect on how art can help to contact the profound fears buried in the unconscious which are now being awakened by the pandemic. The contemplation of this painting facilitated the emergence of emotions related to the darkness of our time, with t …

Content Representation of Tactile Mental Imagery in Primary Somatosensory Cortex.

The imagination of tactile stimulation has been shown to activate primary somatosensory cortex (S1) with a somatotopic specificity akin to that seen during the perception of tactile stimuli. Using fMRI and multivariate pattern analysis, we investigate whether this recruitment of sensory regions also reflects content-specific activation (i.e., whether the activation in S1 is specific to the mental content participants imagined). To this end, healthy volunteers (n = 21) either perceived or imagined three types of vibrotactile stimuli (mental content) while fMRI data were acquired. Independent of…

Decoding stimulus identity in occipital, parietal and inferotemporal cortices during visual mental imagery.

In the absence of input from the external world, humans are still able to generate vivid mental images. This cognitive process, known as visual mental imagery, involves a network of prefrontal, parietal, inferotemporal, and occipital regions. Using multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA), previous studies were able to distinguish between the different orientations of imagined gratings, but not between more complex imagined stimuli, such as common objects, in early visual cortex (V1). Here we asked whether letters, simple shapes, and objects can be decoded in early visual areas during visual menta

Stage- and cell-specific expression of ecdysone receptors and ecdysone-induced transcription factors during midgut remodeling in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

In insects, especially in mosquitoes that are adult blood feeders, midgut remodeling is an important event during metamorphosis. It involves two processes viz., programmed cell death (PCD) of larval cells, and proliferation and differentiation of imaginal cells to form pupal/adult midgut. These processes are regulated by 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) and juvenile hormone (JH), but the signaling mechanisms, which trigger specific changes remain poorly understood. Here, we report stage- and cell-specific expression of ecydone receptor (EcR), ultraspiracle (USP), broad (Br), E75B and hormone receptor

Enantioselective electrophilic trifluoromethylation of beta-keto esters with Umemoto reagents induced by chiral nonracemic guanidines.

Chiral nonracemic guanidines act as Brønsted bases to generate guanidinium enolates for the enantioselective electrophilic trifluoromethylation of beta-keto esters by means of S-(trifluoromethyl)dibenzothiophenium tetrafluoroborate (Umemoto reagent) with good enantioselectivity of 60-70% range. Despite the fact that the ees are still improvable, the model reported in this work could spark the imagination of chemists to design new chiral bases to improve the stereochemical outcome.

Psychopathic callousness and perspective taking in pain processing: an ERP study.

Psychopathy is a multifaceted personality disorder characterized by distinct affective/interpersonal traits, including callousness-unemotionality/meanness, which are often considered the hallmarks of empathic deficits. It has been posited that the processing of others' pain could play an important role in empathy capabilities. This study aimed to investigate the influence of perspective taking on electrocortical responses during pain processing in relation to psychopathic callousness. The late positive potential (LPP) -a well-established electrophysiological indicator of sustained attention to

Modulation of interbrain synchrony by emotional valence and maternal presence in mother-child dyads: neural links to empathy and attachment.

Interbrain synchrony (IBS) is thought to reflect the flow of information between individuals and interpersonal mechanisms like empathy and bonding. Previous research suggests that IBS varies according to different factors, including interpersonal bond type, individual characteristics, emotional valence and physical presence/absence. This study investigated how IBS in mother-child dyads varies during imagined emotional situations, focusing on valence and imagined presence/absence of the mother. We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning to measure IBS over the right pre
