We mapped the cortical representations of the abductor pollicis brevis, flexor carpi radialis, biceps and deltoid muscles in six subjects with unilateral wrist fractures, immediately after the removal of the splint. First-stage larvae of Caenorhabditis elegans were immersed in 0.15% 1-phenoxy-2-propanol to induce temporary paralysis, including the suppression of pharyngeal pumping. Subsequent addition of ivermectin (to give 50 micrograms/ml) induced coiling and prolonged immobilization of such larvae, as also of control larvae (previously immersed only in water). The results suggest that ingestion of drug by means of pharyngeal pumping is not a prerequisite for the uptake of ivermectin at levels sufficient for antinematodal action.

Prolonged bed rest and immobilization inevitably lead to complications. Such complications are much easier to prevent than to treat. Musculoskeletal complications include loss of muscle strength and endurance, contractures and soft tissue changes, disuse osteoporosis, and degenerative joint disease. Cardiovascular complications include an increased heart rate, decreased cardiac reserve, orthostatic hypotension, and venous thromboembolism.

In a prospective study of 108 patients with a clinical diagnosis of fracture of the carpal scaphoid, but without radiological evidence of fracture, the patients were randomised to treatment with either a supportive bandage or a dorsal plaster cast. Four patients proved to have incomplete fractures and three to have avulsions from the scaphoid tuberosity. Two of the fractures had been suspected radiologically at the primary investigation. Oligodeoxyribonucleotides terminating in a 5'-primary amine group are synthesized using solid-phase supported phosphoramidite chemistry. The 5'-terminal amine group in the deprotected oligomers is further derivatized with either succinic anhydride to give 5'-carboxylic acid or with dithiobis(succinimidylpropionate) followed by treatment with dithioerythritol to produce 5'-thiol-terminated oligonucleotides. The 5'-thiol-terminated oligonucleotides are selectively immobilized on solid supports containing either p-chloromercuribenzoate or 2,2'-dithiobis(5-nitropyridine) activated thiol groups.

The objective of this study was to compare the degree of osteoarthritis caused by different periods of repeated immobilization and mobilization.
