A review of the long-term protection after hepatitis A and B vaccination.

Vaccine-preventable viral hepatitis continues to be a cause of considerable morbidity and mortality: on worldwide basis, approximately 1.4 million cases of hepatitis A are reported every year. The true incidence, however, has been estimated to be 3-10 times higher. Regarding hepatitis B, more than a third of the world's population has been infected. The World Health Organization has estimated (2000) that there are 367 million chronic carriers of hepatitis B worldwide, and approximately 1 million deaths per year as a consequence of chronic complications and acute fulminant disease. Hepatitis B

Measles reimmunization in children immunized before 1 year of age.

An outbreak of measles presented an opportunity to examine the immune response of children initially immunized with measles vaccine before 1 year of age to reimmunization at 15 months of age with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. Eighteen previously immunized children had higher acute and convalescent hemagglutination inhibition titers than 13 control children. None of the previously immunized children had measles-specific IgM appear in convalescent serum samples. These results indicate a brisk secondary immune response to measles reimmunization in children immunized before 1 year of age. T

B cell memory in xid mice is long-lived despite reduced memory B cell frequency.

Brutons tyrosine kinase (Btk) deficient xid mice have a diminished primary T cell dependent immune response, resulting in a reduced memory B cell frequency. Boosting at 35 days post primary immunization, however, generates a normal secondary immune response, indicating a functional memory B cell compartment. The longevity of B cell memory appears to depend on both the presence of antigen and expression of cell survival genes such as bcl-2. Since there is a natural decay in the number of memory B cells over time and since xid B cells have been demonstrated to have reduced Bcl-2 levels, we aimed

Napa Immunization Study: Immunization Rates for Children with Publicly Funded Insurance Compared with those with Private Health Insurance in a Suburban Medical Office.

INTRODUCTION: Healthy People 2020 set a goal to increase the proportion of children who receive the recommended doses of Diphtheria Tetanus and Pertussis, polio, measles mumps and rubella, Haemophilus influenzae type b, hepatitis B, varicella and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines to 80% from the 2009 baseline rate of 69%. The purpose of this study is to compare the recommended immunization rates for low-income children insured through publicly funded health insurance (PFI) to the rates for children with private health insurance (PHI) in a suburban medical office. METHODS: The immunization rates

Adequate tetanus toxoid immunization and its correlates among married women with a recent live birth in Afghanistan: Insights from a national survey.

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and correlates of adequate tetanus toxoid (TT) immunization among married women in Afghanistan. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2022-2023 Afghanistan Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), focusing on 12,450 married women aged 15-49y who had a live birth in the two years preceding the survey. Multivariable logistic regression determined the correlates of adequate TT immunization. The prevalence of adequate TT immunization was 49.9% (95% CI 48.2%-51.6%). The odds of adequate TT immunization were higher in women with primary (AOR

Mucosal Administration of Recombinant Baculovirus Displaying Toxoplasma gondii ROP4 Confers Protection Against T. gondii Challenge Infection in Mice.

Pathogens require physical contact with the mucosal surface of the host organism to initiate infection and as such, vaccines eliciting both mucosal and systemic immune responses would be promising. Studies involving the use of recombinant baculoviruses (rBVs) as mucosal vaccines are severely lacking despite their inherently safe nature, especially against pathogens of global importance such as Toxoplasma gondii. Here, we generated rBVs displaying T. gondii rhoptry protein 4 (ROP4) and evaluated their protective efficacy in BALB/c mice following immunization via intranasal (IN) and oral routes.

Determinants of complete immunization among senegalese children aged 12-23 months: evidence from the demographic and health survey.

BACKGROUND: The expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) is one of the most cost-effective interventions to reduce childhood mortality and morbidity. However, determinants of childhood immunization have not been well studied in Senegal. Thus, the aim of our study is to assess routine immunization uptake and factors associated with full immunization status among Senegalese children aged 12-23 months. METHODS: We used the 2010-2011 Senegalese Demographic and Health Survey data. The DHS was a two stages cross-sectional survey carried out in 2010-2011. The analysis included 2199 children aged 12-

Prime-boost vaccine strategy against viral infections: Mechanisms and benefits.

The essential goal of vaccination is to generate potent and long-term protection against diseases. Among different vaccine modalities, prime-boost vaccine strategies could enhance cellular and also humoral immunity in several animal models. These strategies have been applied for the development of vaccines against important infectious diseases such as HIV, SIV, HCV, HSV, and HBV indicating promising results even in clinical trials. Several factors including selection of antigen, type of vector, delivery route, dose, adjuvant, boosting regimen, the order of vector injection, and the intervals b

Rabies-prevention policy update: new reduced-dose schedule.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends reducing the number of doses from 5 to 4 of human diploid cell vaccine or purified chick embryo cell vaccine required for postexposure prophylaxis to prevent rabies in humans. The vaccine doses should be given on day 0 (first day of prophylaxis) and days 3, 7, and 14 after the first dose. For persons with immune suppression, the 5-dose regimen should continue to be used. Recommendations for the use of human rabies immunoglobulin remain unchanged. The American Academy of Pediatrics endo

[Study of an immunization plan for broilers via the spray method against Newcastle disease using vaccines from the Bl and La Sota strains].

Studied was the immunization pattern against Newcastle disease in birds with the use of a spray method on broilers obtained congenitally from their mothers, having antihemagglutinins. All birds on one of the premises ( a total of 14, 000) were vaccinated when 5 days old with a liquid vaccine of strain B1 (one fourth dose per bird) using the Dutch pulverizing apparatus Flox-10 -- group I. Other 14,000 birds of another of the premises of the same batch were treated at the same age with the same dose via the same route of application of a liquid vaccine of the La Sota strain --group II. All birds

Demand-side determinants of timely vaccination of oral polio vaccine in social mobilization network areas of CORE Group polio project in Uttar Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: Children who receive all doses of scheduled vaccines reduce their susceptibility to vaccine-preventable diseases. In India, full immunization coverage has increased significantly. However, only a small proportion of children are immunized on time. Globally, studies on factors affecting coverage of childhood immunization have found a significant impact by demand and supply-side determinants. This paper explores the demand-side determinants of timely immunization of the third dose of oral polio vaccine (OPV3) among children aged 6-11 months in the catchment areas of CORE Group Polio

Performance and determinants of routine immunization coverage within the context of intensive polio eradication activities in Uttar Pradesh, India: Social Mobilization Network (SM Net) and Core Group Polio Project (CGPP).

BACKGROUND: Studies that have looked at the effect of polio eradication efforts in India on routine immunization programs have provided mixed findings. One polio eradication project, funded by US Agency for International Development (USAID) and carried out by the CORE Group Polio Project (CGPP) in the state of Uttar Pradesh of India, has included the strengthening of routine immunization systems as a core part of its polio eradication strategy. This paper explores the performance of routine immunization services in the CGPP intervention areas concurrent with intensive polio eradication activit

Introduction of a second dose of measles in national immunization program in India: a major step towards eradication.

Measles is a highly infectious, acute respiratory illness that is caused by a virus of the genus Morbillivirus. The disease infects nearly 30 million children each year, and deaths usually occur from complications related to pneumonia, diarrhea and malnutrition. A systematic review of published Indian literature depicts the median case fatality ratio (CFR) of measles to be 1.6%. Through immunization, measles deaths dropped a remarkable 78% from 733,000 in 2000 to 164,000 in 2008. As of 2008, 192 of 193 Member States of WHO use 2 doses of measles vaccine in their national immunization programs,

[Vaccinations in adults--who? when? why?].

Despite the success of childhood vaccinations in Europe, many infectious diseases pose a threat to adults, particularly because immunity induced by vaccination is not life long in some cases. This paper presents the rationale for adult boosters for diphtheria, hepatitis B, pertussis, poliomyelitis and tetanus. Moreover indication for adult-vaccinations against measles, mumps, German measles and varicella is discussed, as a significant part of the population in Germany is susceptible or without known immunity/vaccination history. Finally, immunisation of the elderly against infections with infl
