There are limited data on immunological disorders, infection profile, and autoimmunity among adults with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) in the literature. To expand this knowledge base, we evaluated immunoglobulin levels, lymphocyte subsets, and T-cell function in 26 adults, consecutively referred to our 22q11.2DS multidisciplinary team. Their medical records were also reviewed with respect to frequency and severity of infections and autoimmune disorders. Six patients had low immunoglobulin levels; among these patients, one had a combined IgA and IgG1 deficiency, one had an isolated

Primary immunodeficiencies constitute a group of highly complex congenital disorders most of which are characterized by poor prognosis with high mortality and morbidity. Hematopoietic SCT became an established therapy for such disorders. The first clear-cut report of successful allogenic SCT in 1968 dealt with the treatment of a patient with primary immunodeficiency, that is, SCID and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. Starting with this pioneering experience in 1968, hundreds of SCID patients and hundreds of patients affected by other life-threatening forms of primary immunodeficiency throughout the w

This report describes a case of a young man with DiGeorge Syndrome, repaired Tetralogy of Fallot, relapsed metastatic Hodgkin's Lymphoma, immunodeficiency, and a history of recurrent and severe infections. A review of the literature indicates that patients with DiGeorge Syndrome are at greater risk for infection, malignancy, and cardiac events due to anatomic and immunologic complications resulting from a deletion in the 22q11.2 chromosome. As an increased number of patients with DiGeorge Syndrome are surviving into adulthood, it is important to understand the progression of the disease and th

A 25-year-old woman with Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) had complete external ophthalmoplegia, short stature, ataxia, cardiac conduction defects, and pigmentary retinopathy. Muscle biopsy revealed ragged-red fibers. Electron microscopy showed increased numbers of mitochondria with disordered structure and paracrystalline inclusions. Enzymatic analysis revealed a deficiency of complex II of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, and, more specifically, a deficiency of succinic dehydrogenase, although both subunits of this enzyme proved to be present by immunologic analysis. Therapy with vitamin cofa

The clinical, hematologic, and immunologic findings of a syndrome of agranulocytosis, hypogammaglobulinemia, and thymoma are described. Neutrophil agranulocytosis predisposing to severe infectious disease resulted from a deficiency of mature cells in bone marrow. Autologous and heterologous stem cell growth in vitro was inhibited by the patient's serum. Immunoglobulin deficiency was secondary to the absence of peripheral blood B lymphocytes, while T-cell subpopulations and cellular immunity were present. Surgical removal of a spindle cell thymoma had no effect on the agranulocytosis and B-cell

Intramuscular Immunoglobulin (IMIG) have been used for 40 years in substitution therapy for antibody deficiencies and as prophylaxis for and treatment of several infectious diseases. Modified and intact intravenous immunoglobulin preparations (IVIG) have now been available for more than 10 years: only the intact product express full Fc- mediated functions with a biological half-life of IgG (3-4 weeks). These preparations have constituted an important achievement in the treatment of humoral immunodeficiencies also resulting in a dramatic improvement of the prognosis. The use of IVIG has also mo

Cord blood mononuclear cells (MNC) were isolated from 20 normal full-term newborns. These MNC were preincubated with either 50, 100, or 200 micrograms/ml Thymostimulin or without Thymostimulin. The interleukin-2 (IL-2) and gamma-interferon (gamma-IFN) production, cytotoxicity, and lymphoproliferation and IL-2 receptor (Tac) expression were all significantly increased after Thymostimulin treatment. For evaluation of the in vivo effect, two combined-immunodeficiency patients defective on the thymic level, one with progressive BCG infection, and one with DiGeorge syndrome were used. Before Thymos

The first case of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Norway, diagnosed in January 1983, is presented, with results of clinical, immunological, and microbiological studies and the results of autopsy. Immunological studies showed several immunological abnormalities, including a profound deficiency of the T-cell system of the type usually associated with AIDS. During the 11 months of symptomatic disease the patient had a series of opportunistic infections, including recurrent candida esophagitis, probable Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and severe and recurrent perioral Herpes simplex v

Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by telangiectasia, progressive ataxia, sinopulmonary infections and a combined immunodeficiency (usually consisting of IgA deficiency, IgE deficiency, IgG2 and IgG4 deficiency and a disturbed T cell immunity). The alpha-fetoprotein level is elevated. Cytogenetic studies reveal a very specific chromosome instability with multiple chromosome 7 and/or 14 rearrangements (preferential breakpoints 14q32, 14q12, 7q35 and 7p12). X-ray hypersensitivity is one of the hallmarks of the disease. Nijmegen Breakage Syndrome (NBS), an

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in children has been reported to be associated with various constitutional anomalies; however, it has not been described previously in patients with Griscelli syndrome (GS). In this report, we present a case with GS and refractory anemia with an excess of blasts. We believe that careful evaluation of peripheral blood and bone marrow could increase the number of patients who are found to have GS-associated MDS.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a heterogeneous form of primary immune deficiency characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia, recurrent bacterial infections, and various immunologic abnormalities. In addition to recurrent infections, patients with this syndrome have an increased incidence of autoimmune diseases and malignancy. A patient with CVID in whom myofibroblastic tumors affecting both adrenal glands and skin is presented.

A case of chronic lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly existing over a period of 11 years, with a variety of acquired deficiencies of immunity and autoimmune phenomena, is described. It is almost identical with the 5 children reported in 1967 by Canale and Smith as a new benign syndrome "chronic lymphadenopathy simulating malignant lymphoma". The relationship to similar disorders with lymphadenopathy and immunological abnormalities is discussed.

Hyper-IgM (HIGM) syndrome is a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by normal or elevated serum IgM levels associated with absent or decreased IgG, IgA and IgE. Here we summarize data from the HIGM syndrome Registry of the Latin American Society for Immunodeficiencies (LASID). Of the 58 patients from 51 families reported to the registry with the clinical phenotype of HIGM syndrome, molecular defects were identified in 37 patients thus far. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical, immunological and molecular data from these 37 patients. CD40 ligand (CD40L) deficiency was found in 35

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the frequency of atopy and allergic disease in all groups of primary immunodeficiency (PID) patients. The study was done on 318 patients with PID between the ages of 6 months and 18 years. The patients and their parents were questioned regarding their histories of asthma and allergic disease. Within the study group, 82.4% of the patients had antibody deficiency, 10.4% combined immunodeficiency, 6.6% phagocyte number or function defect, and 0.6% complement deficiency. Patients with selective immunoglobulin (Ig)A deficiency had a more significant

Serum IgG subclass levels were measured using an indirect competitive immunoenzymatic assay with monoclonal antibodies in 221 patients affected with definite immunodeficiency (ID) syndromes and 229 patients presenting with infection patterns suggestive of ID, but with normal immunoglobulin class levels and no clear evidence of ID. In common variable ID and IgG-IgA deficiency with normal or high IgM, subclass imbalance (mostly IgG1-IgG3 or IgG2-IgG4 deficiency) was the rule, with a higher incidence of severe infections in IgG2-IgG4 defects. One-fifth of patients with IgA deficiency, especially

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH, also referred to a hemophagocytic syndrome) is a life-threatening condition in which uncontrolled activation of lymphocytes and macrophages, and thus the secretion of large amounts of inflammatory cytokines, leads to a severe hyperinflammatory state. Over the last few decades, researchers have characterized primary forms of HLH caused by genetic defects that impair lymphocytes' cytotoxic machinery. Other genetic causes of HLH not related to impaired cytotoxicity have also recently been identified. Furthermore, the so-called 'acquired' forms of HLH are e
