2-Chloro-1-methylpyridinium iodide is a coupling reagent for peptide synthesis. By its use different peptides were synthesized with protected di- and trifunctional amino acids. While urethan-protected amino acids react free of racemization, the fragment condensation needs N-Hydroxysuccinimide, as shown by the Young test.

A synthesis of the N-hydroxysuccinimide ester of S-acetylthioacetic acid is described. This material is stable when stored dry and has advantages over the currently available reagents used to introduce sulfhydryl groups into a variety of proteins. Proteins modified with this reagent can be used to prepare conjugates for enzyme immunoassay. The conjugation techniques described cause little or no loss of either enzyme activity or antibody titer and function, and the conjugates contain little polymeric material.

A sensitive and selective method for the measurement of carbimide, the hydrolytic product of calcium carbimide, in plasma is described. The procedure involves extraction with ethyl acetate, derivatization with heptafluorobutyric anhydride and analysis by gas-liquid chromatography with electron-capture detection. The lower limit of sensitivity of the assay is 5.0 ng/ml carbimide in plasma. The overall accuracy of the procedure is 96.1% with a coefficient of variation not exceeding 8.7%. Human urine was tested for tricyclic antidepressants with fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) reagents on Abbott's ADx system and with EIA reagents on Syva's ETS system. A 75-ng/mL imipramine calibrator cutoff was used with the ADx system and a 300-ng/mL nortriptyline calibrator cutoff with the ETS system. The ETS system was adapted to analyze tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) samples using the Syva Emittox serum TCA assay.
