Treading the Path towards Genetic Control of Snail Resistance to Schistosome Infection.

Schistosomiasis remains the most important tropical snail-borne trematodiasis that threatens many millions of human lives. In achieving schistosomiasis elimination targets, sustainable control of the snail vectors represents a logical approach. Nonetheless, the ineffectiveness of the present snail control interventions emphasizes the need to develop new complementary strategies to ensure more effective control outcomes. Accordingly, the use of genetic techniques aimed at driving resistance traits into natural vector populations has been put forward as a promising tool for integrated snail cont

Evaluation of the Compliance of Orthodontists to Infection Control Procedures in Turkey.

OBJECTIVE: Orthodontists do not perform surgical procedures, nevertheless they are obliged to practice appropriate sterilization techniques to prevent cross-infection. This is also important from an ethical and legal point of view. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the compliance of orthodontists to infection control procedures in Turkey. METHODS: A questionnaire with 36 items was delivered by e-mail to a total of 1152 orthodontists/residents between October 2014 and March 2015 by the Turkish Orthodontic Society. Various data from surveys were analyzed using the IBM SPSS statistics …

[Infection control practices while performing prostate biopsies in France: A CIAFU survey].

UNLABELLED: In 2008, the French Public Health Committee admitted that associating ultrasound probe protection, and related precautions, and low-level disinfection would be equivalent to the intermediate level disinfection. In 2010, the French Urology Association (AFU) updated guidelines regarding trans-rectal prostate biopsies, namely preventive measures related to cross-transmission of infections. We report an evaluation of compliance to them, driven in 2016 by AFU's infection committee. Although not recommended, almost one third of the urologists still perform biopsies under general anesthes

Helicobacter pylori infection in women with Hashimoto thyroiditis: A case-control study.

An association between Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection as environmental risk factors for Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) has been reported. We investigated this hypothesis in women in which HT is more common. Serum immunoglobulin G antibodies against H pylori (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), CagA protein (Western blot assay), circulating antibodies to thyroid antigens, mainly thyroperoxidase (TPOAbs) and thyroglobulin (TgAbs), were tested in 101 females with HT and 111 non-HT control women without a history of autoimmune disease. Thyroid function, socioeconomic status at childhood, and

CXCR5(+) follicular cytotoxic T cells control viral infection in B cell follicles.

During unresolved infections, some viruses escape immunological control and establish a persistant reservoir in certain cell types, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which persists in follicular helper T cells (TFH cells), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which persists in B cells. Here we identified a specialized group of cytotoxic T cells (TC cells) that expressed the chemokine receptor CXCR5, selectively entered B cell follicles and eradicated infected TFH cells and B cells. The differentiation of these cells, which we have called 'follicular cytotoxic T cells' (TFC cells), required

Toxoplasma gondii infection in interstate truck drivers: a case-control seroprevalence study.

BACKGROUND: Infection with Toxoplasma gondii can be acquired via the ingestion of undercooked or raw meat containing tissue cysts, or via ingestion of water contaminated with oocysts. Professional long distance truck driving may have epidemiological importance for food-borne infections since drivers eat out of home and in places where hygiene and cooking practices are uncertain. We aimed to determine whether interstate truck drivers in Durango, Mexico have an increased risk of infection with T. gondii as indicated by seropositivity; and to determine the socio-demographic, work, clinical, and b

Vasculoplacental complications in pregnant women with HIV infection: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Data from the international literature suggest that there may be an association between maternal human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and vasculoplacental complications during pregnancy. Studies on this subject have reached discordant conclusions. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of vasculoplacental complications during pregnancy in women with and without HIV infection. STUDY DESIGN: This single-center case-control study compared the incidence of pregnancy-related hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia, and vascular intrauterine growth restriction in 280 wom

Optimal control of a two-strain tuberculosis-HIV/AIDS co-infection model.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB). The risk for TB infection greatly increases with HIV infection; TB disease occurs in 7-10% of patients with HIV infection each year, increasing the potential for transmission of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. In this paper a deterministic model is presented and studied for the transmission of TB-HIV/AIDS co-infection. Optimal control theory is then applied to investigate optimal strategies for controlling the spread of the disease using treatment of infected individuals with TB as the system cont

Control and eradication strategies for brucella melitensis infection in sheep and goats.

AIM: To describe the various strategies for the control and eradication of B. melitensis infection in sheep and goats. METHODS: The advantages and drawbacks of these strategies are discussed on the basis of the author's personal experience and a revision of the relevant literature. RESULTS: Vaccination programmes in various combinations can be applied either to decrease the prevalence of infection in the animal population or, when combined with adequate complementary eradication measures, to achieve a brucellosis-free status. CONCLUSION: Controlling the disease should be the primary goal of

HIV-1 infection and the PPARγ-dependent control of adipose tissue physiology.

PPARγ is a ligand-dependent master transcription factor controlling adipocyte differentiation as well as multiple biological processes taking place in other cells present in adipose tissue depots such as macrophages. Recent research indicates that HIV-1 infection-related events may alter adipose tissue biology through several mechanisms involving PPARγ, ranging from direct effects of HIV-1-encoded proteins on adipocytes to the promotion of a proinflammatory environment that interferes with PPARγ actions. This effect of HIV-1 on adipose tissue cells can occur even in the absence of direct infec

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases in Taiwan: epidemiology, detection, treatment and infection control.

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) efficiently hydrolyze extended-spectrum beta-lactams such as cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, and aztreonam. ESBLs are most often plasmid-mediated. In Taiwan, the prevalence of ESBLs in bacteria has risen, ranging from 8.5 to 29.8% in Klebsiella pneumoniae and 1.5 to 16.7% in Escherichia coli isolates. The most prevalent types of ESBLs are SHV-5, SHV-12, CTX-M-3, and CTX-M-14 in isolates of K. pneumoniae and E. coli, with differences between institutions. SHV-12 and CTX-M-3 have been reported as the most common ESBLs in isolates of Enterobacter cl

Role for the CD28 molecule in the control of Coxiella burnetii infection.

Q fever is an infectious disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, an obligate intracellular bacterium that replicates in macrophages. As cell-mediated immune response to microbial pathogens requires signals mediated by T-cell receptors and costimulatory molecules such as CD28, we wondered if CD28 is involved in protection against C. burnetii infection. CD28-deficient (CD28-/-) mice were inoculated with C. burnetii by intraperitoneal and intravenous routes. With both wild-type and CD28-/- mice, C. burnetii organisms were detected exclusively in spleen and liver. The antibody response against C. bur

Risk factors for Fasciola hepatica infection in children: a case-control study.

We conducted a case-control study to clarify the risk factors for human fascioliasis in the Northern Peruvian Altiplano. Cases (n=61) were individuals who were diagnosed as having chronic fascioliasis by faecal and/or serologic (Fas2-ELISA) studies. Controls (n=61) had negative serologic and coprological results for Fasciola hepatica. We identified an association between fascioliasis and four variables (40 analysed): the habit of drinking alfalfa juice (OR=4.5; 95% CI 1.8-11.1; P<0.001); familiarity with aquatic plants (OR=4.3; 95% CI 1.8-10.6; P<0.001); dog ownership (OR=5; 95% CI 1.7-15.1; P
