Predictors of Service Awareness: Results from a Community Survey in an Urban Area.

We examined information seeking strategies and predictors of service awareness from a 2019 survey of Detroit area adults. Participants were age 60+ (mean age = 72.10; SD = 8.08), and most were African American (89.0%) and female (86.9%). Most (74.80%) reported finding information most or all of the time, and 87.50% reported awareness of 12 to 15 services. Respondents with more frequent family/friend interaction (OR = 2.374, 95% CI = 1.054, 5.347), greater use of information seeking strategies (OR = 1.188, 95% CI = 15 1.073, 1.315), and higher health status (OR = 3.445, 95% CI =1.625, 7.306) we

What information women want about intrauterine devices and contraceptive implants and where they want to receive this information: findings from an Australian online survey.

Background Information about contraceptive options is important for informed decision making. We aimed to understand the information needs and preferences of potential users of intrauterine devices and contraceptive implants, methods that are underutilised in Australia. Methods We conducted an online survey of Australian women aged 18-45years. The survey comprised mostly close-ended questions, with a few opportunities for free-text comments. Results In total, 1745 women participated in the survey. Participants had a mean age of 31years; most identified as heterosexual (67%) and said that they

Women with epilepsy in childbearing age: Pregnancy-related knowledge, information sources, and antiepileptic drugs.

Pregnancy-related issues in epilepsy (PRIE) are essential for management of epilepsy in women. We conducted a study among women with epilepsy (WWE) aged 15-45years about their knowledge, sources, and needs for information regarding PRIE, which included their current antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) usage. Women with epilepsy, visitors of Croatian Association for Epilepsy webpage, were offered an online questionnaire, and 200 responses were analyzed. The mean number of correct answers about PRIE was 3.5 out of 5. Main predictors of knowledge on PRIE were a prior consultation with a neurologist and hi

Factors associated with health discussion network size and composition among elderly recipients of long-term services and supports.

Social networks play an important role in helping older adults monitor symptoms and manage chronic conditions. People use verbal discussions to make sense of symptoms, determine their seriousness, and decide whether to seek medical care. In this study, problem-specific social networks called health discussion networks (HDNs) are examined over time among older adults receiving long-term services and supports (LTSS). Data were gathered from older adults who had recently moved into a nursing home (NH) or assisted-living facility (ALF) or who had started to receive home- and community-based servic

Neural correlates of information gain during search revealed by fMRI.

When confronted with uncertainty, humans engage in information-seeking behavior to gather sufficient information. Identifying the brain regions involved offers insight into the underlying cognitive mechanisms. Using Shannon information theory, we quantified the information contained in the image tiles presented in an fMRI experiment. Nineteen participants judged whether a caption described an image by viewing a sequence of tiles and signaling when it matched. Random-effects ANOVA and representational similarity analysis revealed that regions associated with information gain resulted in two com

AI feedback-seeking and learning engagement in art education: psychological antecedents and reflective mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION: Generative artificial intelligence provides students with a feedback source that differs from traditional teacher and peer interaction, yet limited research has explained why students actively seek feedback from AI or how such feedback-seeking is associated with subsequent learning engagement. Drawing on transactional stress and coping theory and social cognitive theory, this study examined the psychological antecedents and reflective mechanisms of AI feedback-seeking in art education. METHODS: Two complementary studies were conducted. Study 1 utilized survey data from 315 highe

Formal help-seeking among community-based Czech individuals with sexual interest in minors is associated with the perceived urgency of self-identified concerns.

BACKGROUND: In the community, there are non-forensic individuals who experience sexual interest in minors and have specific mental health needs and concerns. If left unaddressed, these issues may contribute to problematic sexual behaviors. Although supportive treatment programs are emerging in Czechia, self-motivated help-seeking remains generally low in this at-risk population. OBJECTIVE: To inform strategies for encouraging preventive service use, this study aimed to examine how past help-seeking experiences relate to factors that may influence the likelihood of seeking professional help, a

Exploring Help-Seeking Behaviors among Black Sexual Minority Cisgender Women in Late Adolescence: The Role of Abuse Experiences.

Sexual minority youth (e.g., lesbian, queer, bisexual) encounter higher rates of abuse compared to their heterosexual peers. Similarly, Black youth are disproportionately affected by adverse experiences, including abuse. Seeking help after experiencing abuse has been shown to improve both mental and physical health outcomes. There is a lack of research on how the intersection of these identities affects help-seeking behaviors when experiencing different types of abuse. To address this gap, our study analyzed national data from 716 Black cisgender sexual minority women (SMW) aged 18 to 21 (Mage

Understanding Generational Differences in Muslim American Mental Health Help-Seeking.

Attitudes toward mental health help-seeking are shaped by a complex interplay of environmental, sociocultural, religious, and generational factors. Within Muslim communities, these attitudes are further informed by religious teachings, cultural norms, and intergenerational dynamics. This study explores the disparities in mental health-seeking behavior between first- and second-generation Muslim Americans. The sample consisted of 37 participants, including 16 first-generation immigrants (foreign-born) and 21 second-generation individuals born in the USA to at least one immigrant parent. The stu

"It Is in the Air": Seeking and Scanning for Information About Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Young-Adult Men Who Have Sex with Men in the US.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a biomedical intervention that dramatically lowers one's risk of acquiring HIV. However, PrEP uptake has been slow among young-adult men who have sex with men (YMSM) - one group highly vulnerable to HIV infection in the US. Drawing from health communication scholarship on information seeking and scanning, as well as on concepts from the health belief model, we convened individual interviews and focus groups with N = 50 PrEP-eligible YMSM in the US to understand how and where YMSM acquire information about PrEP. Our qualitative analyses yielded four sets of fi

Google searches and medical publication trends since the 2014 US Food and Drug Administration position on power morcellation: Do these translate into patient awareness?

OBJECTIVES: Our primary objective was to assess patient awareness by observing Google Trends comparing search terms used in relation to morcellation rather than morcellation alone. Our secondary objective was to review trends and locations of publications on leiomyosarcoma and morcellation following the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) position statement. STUDY DESIGN: To assess Internet trends, we obtained the relative search volume (RSV) for each month from 1 January 2004 to 1 March 2019 from Google Trends using the terms 'fibroid', 'morcellation', and 'fibroid cancer'. RSV ranges from
