Barriers to oral health service access for rural and remote Australian children: a mixed-methods systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Children living in rural and remote communities experience challenges in dental care access. While several studies have reported barriers contributing to inequalities in services utilisation, a synthesis of evidence is lacking for those underserved children. In this review we explore the barriers and challenges to accessing oral health services among children and families living in rural and remote Australia. METHODS: This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for mixed-methods systematic review. We structured our review question using the PICO framework (popul

Recommendations for third molar removal: a practice-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated general dentists' reasons for recommending removal or retention of third molars and whether patients adhered to dentists' recommendations. METHODS: In a 2-year prospective cohort study (2009-2011) in the Pacific Northwest, we followed 801 patients aged 16 to 22 years from 50 general dental practices. Generalized estimating equations logistic regressions related patient and dentist characteristics to dentists' recommendations to remove third molars and to patient adherence. RESULTS: General dentists recommended removal of 1683 third molars from 469 (59%) participan

Oral health status of older adults in Kentucky: results from the Kentucky Elder Oral Health Survey.

The purpose of the Kentucky Elder Oral Health Survey (KEOHS) was to assess the oral health status of Kentuckians 65 and older. The KEOHS consisted of a self-administered questionnaire and a clinical examination. Recruitment occurred from May 2002 through March 2005 of persons aged 65 and older (n = 1,386) whose functional ability was classified by residential setting. Independent elders living in their own homes were designated as "well-elders," those who lived in skilled nursing facilities and who were functionally dependent were designated as "nursing home elders," and those older adults who

Characterizing service receipt among families of young autistic children from low-resourced communities.

When young autistic children (aged 3-5) receive appropriate services, they experience long-term developmental benefits, along with positive impacts on their families and society. However, families of autistic children from low-resourced communities often face compounded barriers to accessing needed services. It is important to characterize service receipt, including current services and unmet service needs, to identify which unmet service needs should be targeted for intervention among families from low-resourced communities. In this study, 52 parents of 3-5-year-olds with autism from low-reso

Relationship of Edentulism, Sleep Disordered Breathing and Cardiovascular Disease: NHANES, 2007-2008.

BACKGROUND: Edentulism, though declining in younger adults, remains prevalent in the U.S. older adult population. Poorer health outcomes, including cardiovascular outcomes have been associated with edentulism. Sleep disorders are also common in older adults and have been associated with cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this study is to determine if edentulism is associated with cardiovascular disease when sleep disorders are included in the analyses. METHODS: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2007-2008 were used in this study. Adjusted logistic regression a

The trends in antibiotic use by general dental practitioners in the Czech Republic (2006-2012).

We assessed antibiotic prescribing in practical dentistry in the Czech Republic, as antibiotics are widely prescribed by dental practitioners and warning signals of their overuse can be observed. The individual antibiotic prescriptions were extracted from the database of the General Health Insurance Company and further analysed. The proportion of dentists' prescription within the whole primary health-care sector and the rate of prescriptions of particular antibiotics were both in defined daily doses per 1,000 insurees and day (DID) and in number of prescriptions calculated. The proportion of a

Digit-sucking: a review of the literature, clinical observations and treatment recommendations.

Prolonged digit-sucking habits can have a negative impact on dental, speech, physical and emotional development. Children can be helped to eliminate their sucking habits quickly, without coercion, and in a positive way. Admittedly, most of my data is based purely on clinical observation. However, clinical observation is the basis for classical scientific investigation. I welcome this investigation; it is long overdue. Much of the literature available to parents appears to take a rather cavalier attitude with regard to the dental consequences of sucking habits. Parents are frequently left with

Health care expenditures among children with and those without spina bifida enrolled in Medicaid in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: National data on health care use among children with special needs are limited and do not address children with spina bifida (SB). One recent study examined health care costs during 2003 among privately insured individuals with SB. Our objective was to compare health care use and expenditures among publicly insured children with SB to children without a major birth defect and among children with SB with and without hydrocephalus. METHODS: Data from the North Carolina Birth Defects Monitoring Program and Medicaid were linked to identify continuously enrolled children with SB (case

The Caribbean Netherlands: Health System Review.

This analysis of the health system of the Caribbean Netherlands reviews developments in governance, organization, financing and delivery of care, health reforms and health system performance on the islands of Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba (the BES islands). Since the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010, residents of the BES islands live in special municipalities of the Netherlands, each with its own government (public entity). The Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport (VWS) in The Hague, through the Department of Care and Youth Caribbean Netherlands (ZJCN), oversees the health sy

Brazilian Immigrant Parents' Perspectives on Oral Health in Early Childhood and Suggested Strategies for Education, Access, and Care: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Oral health in early childhood is vital for long-term well-being, yet dental caries is highly prevalent among young children in the United States, especially in low-income and immigrant families. Brazilian immigrants, a rapidly growing Latin American population in the United States, face distinct barriers to oral health care, such as language differences, limited access to care, and a lack of culturally tailored resources. Despite this, Brazilian immigrants are understudied in public health research. Understanding Brazilian immigrant parents' perspectives is essential to advancing

Medicaid dental coverage and racial/ethnic variation in preventive dental care and unmet needs during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining oral health during pregnancy is important for maternal and child health, yet many low-income individuals face barriers to dental care. Medicaid dental benefits (MDBs) vary by state and may influence access to preventive services and unmet dental need during pregnancy. We examined whether state MDBs for pregnant adults were associated with dental cleaning and unmet dental need, overall and by race and ethnicity. METHODS: We analyzed 2012–2021 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data from 45 states in a pooled cross-sectional design, restricting to Medicaid-enroll

Survival Rate of 3-unit Fixed Partial Dentures Replacing First Molars: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Fixed partial dentures (FPDs) made of 12% Au-Pd alloy are covered under Japan's national health insurance system. The survival rate of such 3-unit fixed FPDs remains unknown, however. The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess their survival rate in the replacement of first molars. A total of 140 FPDs were included, and the endpoint was removal of an FPD. During the observation period, 43 FPDs were removed. The FPD survival rate was 70.2% at 10 yr, 58.2% at 15 yr, and 42.1% at 20 yr according to the Kaplan-Meier method. The estimated mean survival period was 19.4 yr. The main reason
