Development of a Coding Scheme for Interpersonal Mindfulness in Couple Dyads: Ratings of Observed Mindful Partnering.

Mindfulness has well-documented benefits for mental, physical, and relational health. However, research about the role of mindfulness in health has scarcely explored interpersonal mindfulness, a distinct type of mindfulness expressed externally and relationally in interpersonal interactions. Mindfulness is known to be beneficial in romantic relationships but has been underexplored to date. A new interpersonal mindfulness construct known as "mindful partnering" (MP) presents a comprehensive application of interpersonal mindfulness to romantic relationships. This study advances research on MP by

Increasing knowledge about recovery-related life domains among pregnant and parenting women in comprehensive substance use disorder treatment: The Art of Addiction Recovery Program.

BACKGROUND: Group treatments designed specifically for pregnant and parenting women with substance use disorders are lacking. This study provides a preliminary assessment of the Art of Addiction Recovery Program, a manualized group treatment imbedded within a comprehensive substance use disorder treatment program for pregnant and parenting women. METHODS: The Program consists of 14 sessions, each focusing on a different topic, including health, social relationships, the recovery process, well-being, and introspection. Each session includes both the presentation of information by a facilitator

Predictors of Burden and Resilience in Family Caregivers of Individuals With Opioid Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers are an essential resource for individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). Overburdened caregivers often experience detrimental effects to their emotional and physical well-being. METHOD: A cross-sectional, nonexperimental, correlational study was used to identify correlates and predictors of burden and resilience in caregivers of care recipients with OUD. Pearson product-moment correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to explore the relationships between caregiver characteristics, care recipient characteristics, the caregiver-care-recipient dyad cha

Committed relationships and substance use: recent findings and future directions.

Recent research on substance use in committed relationships covers three general areas. First, partners tend to be concordant for substance use, and concordance is at least partially the result of partner influence (or convergence). Second, substance use (particularly discrepant use) predicts relationship outcomes such as lower relationship quality and greater conflict, intimate partner aggression, and risky sex. Concordant use, however, can be protective. Finally, relationship variables, such as conflict, intimate partner aggression, and support for cessation, predict substance use. Recent ad

Engagement in clinical interaction: an introduction.

This article defines and reviews the concept of ENGAGEMENT in social interaction. Engagement refers to the level of interpersonal involvement displayed by participants in social situations. Various signals, including both spoken and unspoken signals, display engagement of participants in social exchanges. Engagement has been studied from a variety of perspectives, such as language development in children, educational interactions, human-machine exchanges, and medical encounters. Engagement can be conceptualized from a global level (e.g., engagement of persons with a disability in community lif

Taking the stress out of stressful conversations.

Stressful conversations are unavoidable in life. In business, they can run the gamut from firing a subordinate to, curiously enough, receiving praise. But whatever the context, stressful conversations carry a heavy emotional load. Indeed, stressful conversations cause such anxiety that most people simply avoid them. Yet it can be extremely costly to dodge issues, appease difficult people, and smooth over antagonisms; avoidance usually only worsens a problem or a relationship. Using vivid examples of the three basic stressful conversations that people bump up against most often in the workplace

Trauma-Related Shame: An Evolutionary Concept Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Feelings of shame after interpersonal assault directly impact survivor well-being. Although the concept of trauma-related shame has been well defined and applied in psychology, the direct application to nursing care for victims of sexual assault is unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to perform an interdisciplinary concept analysis to clarify and synthesize the concept of trauma-related shame as it relates to interpersonal assault. METHOD: A multidisciplinary literature search was conducted using the term "trauma-related shame." Article titles and abstracts were reviewe

Metacognitive Beliefs Uniquely Contribute to Interpersonal Problems: A Test Controlling for Adult Attachment, Big-5 Personality Traits, Anxiety, and Depression.

Interpersonal difficulties are common across psychological disorders and are a legitimate target of treatment. Psychotherapeutic models differ in their understanding of interpersonal problems and how these problems are formulated and treated. It has been suggested that they are both the cause and effect of emotional distress symptoms, that they result from early attachment experiences, and that they are related to personality dimensions. However, the metacognitive model of psychopathology predicts that emotion disorder symptoms and interpersonal problems are linked to a common set of factors i

Stress, coping, and suicide risk in psychiatric inpatients.

The present study investigated the relationship between interpersonal problems, coping styles, and suicide risk. Seventy-one adult psychiatric inpatients completed a suicide risk scale, a measure of interpersonal problems, and a coping scale designed to measure eight coping styles. Patients admitted with a history of suicidal attempts were compared with patients admitted for other reasons. Interpersonal problems were found to be significantly and positively related to suicide risk. The coping style of "suppression" (tendency to avoid threatening or uncomfortable situations) was found to be sig

An ethnography of relationships in societies high in relational mobility.

The model by Kruglanski et al. accounts for a phenomenon that is idiosyncratic and unique to societies high in relational mobility. As such, partner's merit and appreciation, and actor's significance quest are neither necessary nor sufficient conditions for romantic love in other societies. To illustrate this, we present the construal of relationships in Chinese society as a case study.

Relational models are too elaborate for basic social relationship reasoning.

Thomas proposes that infants use relational models to reason about interactions between relationship partners. However, many basic social interactions do not contain enough information to differentiate between models. We propose that both basic interaction reasoning and the formation of diverse, culturally relevant relationship categories are better accounted for by positing relationship features that can be flexibly combined.

A cultural lens on romantic dependence.

Wahring et al. offer a compelling argument that men depend more on romantic partners than women. Our commentary highlights the importance of integrating cultural frameworks - such as relational mobility, support norms, and masculinity ideals - into their model. We argue that sociocultural contexts shape not only the degree of relational dependence but also the nature of close relationships and support behaviors.

People prefer to negotiate with women, even when outcomes are identical and gender is unknown.

While gender and economic outcomes in negotiation have been studied for decades, much less is known about gender differences in subjective outcomes, such as trust, rapport, and willingness to negotiate again, despite their importance for long-term success. In a series of studies with over 2,000 participants, we find that people consistently report better subjective outcomes when negotiating with women. This preference persists even in anonymous negotiations where gender is unknown and cannot be inferred from behavior, as well as in conditions where negotiation partner gender is randomly assign

The third axis: partner choice.

Though we find the 'triple theory' of moral cognition, with its emphasis on resource-rational contractualism, to be well argued, we suggest that Levine et al.'s model starts too late in the process. That is, we agree that their proposed abstractions and heuristics can help to develop mutually beneficial arrangements, but effective contracts also require the identification of reliable actors.

If Turing Played Piano With an Artificial Partner.

Music is an inherently social activity that allows people to share experiences and feel connected with one another. There has been progress in neural network architectures that implement large-language-like generative models producing realistic musical scores, but less progress has been made to enable social experiences for a human playing interactively along with an artificial partner. Playing music socially sometimes works better without a score: Each participant must complement the ideas of other musicians. We investigated whether a generative model trained for passive production of musical

[Maintaining Intimate Relationships After Total Penectomy: A Nursing Care Perspective].

In Eastern cultures, sexuality and intimate relations are typically regarded as delicate issues and generally ignored in treatment processes, which may cause physical, psychological, and even spiritual suffering throughout the process of recovery. This article discusses a case report involving a 42-year-old male patient, who was diagnosed with penile cancer and subsequently received a total penectomy and urethral reconstruction. Nursing care was provided from May 24 to June 15, 2023. The information was gathered using observation, interviews, and chart reviews. In addition to a surgical wound

Friends not food: A scoping review into veg∗an mental health and psychosocial wellbeing.

Past research suggests veg∗anism mostly elicits negative social consequences, including interpersonal conflict and reduced quality of social relationships. Given interpersonal conflict and poor-quality social relationships are associated with poorer mental health, the social consequences elicited by veg∗anism could conceivably influence mental health, though few studies have investigated this. We conducted a scoping review to examine if veg∗an related social consequences influence individuals' mental health. Three databases were searched (PsycINFO, ProQuest and Web of Science), identifying 481

No one sees you quite like I do: The social relations model in personality perception.

The Social Relations Model (SRM) offers a comprehensive framework for examining how individuals perceive personality traits in others, decomposing personality perceptions into perceiver, target, and relationship effects. These components demonstrate meaningful variation across traits, time, classes of relationships, and levels of acquaintance. Nevertheless, while target and perceiver effects have been well-documented, the relationship effect, capturing idiosyncratic, dyad-specific personality perceptions, remains underexplored despite accounting for substantial variance and predicting meaningf
