OBJECTIVE: Adults with serious psychological distress have a high likelihood of mental health problems severe enough to cause serious impairment in social and occupational functioning requiring treatment. These adults visit doctors frequently yet have poor health compared to adults without serious psychological distress. This study examined associations between emotional states of serious psychological distress in relationship to healthcare utilization indicators. A guiding hypothesis was that somatization underlying emotional states contributes to excessive healthcare seeking among adults wit

Training child investigative interviewing skills is a specialized task. Those being trained need opportunities to practice their skills in realistic settings and receive immediate feedback. A key step in ensuring the availability of such opportunities is to develop a dynamic, conversational avatar, using artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can provide implicit and explicit feedback to trainees. In the iterative process, use of a chatbot avatar to test the language and conversation model is crucial. The model is fine-tuned with interview data and realistic scenarios. This study used a

A household probability sample of 229 adults was interviewed four to seven months after the Sierra Madre earthquake (June 28, 1991; Los Angeles County). The study predicted psychological distress from these variables: demographics, traumatic event history, low magnitude event history, earthquake related threat perceptions, and earthquake related resource loss. Based on the Conservation of Resources (COR) stress model, it was predicted that resource loss would be central in predicting psychological distress. Three major hypotheses were supported: (1) resource loss was positively associated with

In India's mental health service delivery, caregivers' needs are often overlooked despite the substantial burden and stress they experience, particularly when caring for individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUD), which in turn affects patient recovery. Ayurveda conceptualizes treatment as resting on four sub-pillars, one of which is the caregiver, and emphasizes specific caregiver qualities, called "Parichara" qualities, essential for favorable treatment outcomes. These include Buddhiman, Daksha, Anurakta, and Shuchi. These Ayurvedic concepts align with psychological capital (PsyCap), and t

BACKGROUND: CFTR-modulators are a category of drugs that facilitate trafficking and opening of the abnormal CFTR protein in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) who have certain genetic mutations. Clinical trial data show that individuals taking CFTR-modulators have increased or stable lung function (FEV1) as well as reduced frequency of pulmonary exacerbations. There are no data on whether CFTR-modulators influence psychosocial aspects of the lives of individuals with CF. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how the introduction of CFTR-modulators has affected individuals' li

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous research has suggest that obesity is associated with increased risk for psychopathological disorders, however, little is known about which obese patients are most vulnerable to psychopathological disorders. We therefore investigated 126 treatment-seeking obese women to describe eating disorder pathology and mental health correlates, and to identify disordered eating behaviors that may place obese at increased risk for psychopathological disorders.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) was used to identify Eating Disorder

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicable disease (NCDs), psychological, substance use disorders, and stress-related issues have been less understood in Indian industrial settings. Systems for screening and early identification of the above have not been integrated in workplaces, nor there is a strong regulatory backing for the same.
AIM: To explore the feasibility of integrating mental health and select NCD risk factor screening with the periodical medical examination of employees. To identify proportion of employees with select NCD risk factors and symptoms suggestive of mental health problems.

BACKGROUND: Research documents a strong relationship between childhood maltreatment and depression. However, only few studies have examined the specific effects of various types of childhood abuse/neglect on depression. This meta-analysis estimated the associations between depression and different types of childhood maltreatment (antipathy, neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and psychological abuse) assessed with the same measure, the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse (CECA) interview.
METHOD: A systematic search in scientific databases included use of CECA interview and strict clini
