[Clinical features of children with colorectal polyps and the efficacy of endoscopic treatment: an analysis of 1 351 cases].

OBJECTIVES: To study the clinical features of children with colorectal polyps and the efficacy of endoscopic treatment. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of 1 351 children with colorectal polyps who were admitted and received colonoscopy and treatment in the past 8 years, including clinical features and the pattern and outcomes of endoscopic treatment. RESULTS: Among the 1 351 children, 893 (66.10%) were boys and 981 (72.61%) had an age of 2-<7 years, and hematochezia (1 307, 96.74%) was the most common clinical manifestation. Of all the children, 89.27% (1

A large inflammatory fibroid polyp in the sigmoid colon treated by endoscopic resection.

Inflammatory fibroid polyp (IFP) is a rare, localized, nonneoplastic lesion originating from the submucosa of the gastrointestinal tract. Microscopically, these lesions are made up of a complex network of variable-size blood vessels and diffuse inflammatory cells contained in the edematous stroma. They are most often found in the stomach, followed by the small intestine, and rarely in the esophagus or the large intestine. We report a case of sigmoid colonic IFP presenting bloody stool treated with endoscopic resection.

Oral melanosis: a case report of Peutz-Jegher's Syndrome in Suva, Fiji.

This paper reports on a case of oral melanosis resultng from Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome, a hereditary disease characterized by harmatomatous polyposis and by mucocutaneous melanic pigmentation, in a 14-year-old Fijian girl with a family history of the disease. The patient underwent surgery for treatment of an intestinal obstruction due to a small intestine intussusception. Recognition of the characteristic pigmentation by dentists may lead to early diagnosis of associated harmatomatous polyps or neoplastic disease that may be life threatening.

Laparoscopically monitored colonoscopic polypectomy: an established form of endoluminal therapy for colorectal polyps.

BACKGROUND: Benign polyps, the most common disorders of the colon, are considered by many to be premalignant lesions. Colonoscopy is widely used to remove the majority of these polyps. However, a variety of "difficult polyps" are not accessible for colonoscopic removal because of their location and size, the tortuosity of the colon, or the complexity of the lesion (sessile vs pedunculated). In the past, a formal segmental resection usually was suggested for these difficult polyps. METHODS: For 110 patients with a median age of 73 years, a total of 149 polyps were removed as follows: 88 from t

Juvenile polyposis.

Juvenile polyposis is an uncommon condition characterized by the development of multiple juvenile polyps, predominantly in the colon but also in the rest of the gastrointestinal tract. The condition usually presents in childhood; only 15 per cent of patients present as adults. The rarer and often fatal form, namely, juvenile polyposis of infancy, is typified by diarrhoea, protein-losing enteropathy, bleeding and rectal prolapse. The more common form of juvenile polyposis (affecting the colon, stomach and small bowel) occurs in the first or second decade with rectal bleeding and anaemia. A fami

[Diffuse familial polyposis].

Familial gastrointestinal polyposis constitutes a multiplication of the principle varieties of common polyps, not only in the colon but also in other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. These are hereditary and familial diseases with autosomal dominant transmission. The genetic defect can also be responsible for associated extra-gastrointestinal lesions. The classification of these familial polyposes is based on the histological features of the polyps. The adenomatous polyposes consist of familial recto-colonic polyposis (FRCP), which is the most frequent form, and Gardner's syndrome. This va

Juvenile Hamartomatous Polyp Causing Jejunal Intussusception in an Eight-Year-Old Child: A Case Report.

While juvenile hamartomatous polyps are common pediatric findings, they are almost exclusively restricted to the colon and rectum; their occurrence in the small intestine is exceptionally rare and presents a significant diagnostic dilemma. This case report describes an eight-year-old patient who presented with vague constitutional symptoms, including intermittent vomiting, abdominal pain, and severe weight loss resulting in a Z-score of -3.29. Initial diagnostic investigations, including abdominal ultrasound, computed tomography, upper digestive endoscopy, and contrast bowel studies, failed to

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome complicated with pulmonary embolism: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare disease, that causes gastrointestinal polyps, ectodermal abnormalities, and gastrointestinal symptoms. CCS is prone to thromboembolism, but clinical workers have not yet established a clinical consciousness of preventing thromboembolism. The present case illustrates pulmonary embolism (PE) complicated by CCS. CASE SUMMARY: A 46-year-old male patient presented with mucus, purulent, and bloody stool. Ectodermal changes included skin pigmentation, alopecia, and nail dystrophy. Colonoscopy revealed the presence of multiple polyps. After a comp

NTHL1 Gene Mutations in Polish Polyposis Patients-Weighty Player or Vague Background?

Multiple polyposes are heterogeneous diseases with different underlying molecular backgrounds, sharing a common symptom: the presence of transforming into cancerous intestinal polyps. Recent reports have indicated biallelic mutations in the NTHL1 gene, which is involved in base excision repair (BER), as predisposing to an elevated risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). We aimed to evaluate the significance of the p.Q82* truncating variant in predisposition to intestinal polyposis by assessing its frequency in polyposis patients. We genotyped 644 Polish patients and 634 control DNA samples using high

Intestinal adenocarcinoma in an augmented ileocystoplasty.

We present a case of a 67-year-old patient with a history of augmentation ileocystoplasty 31 years ago following genitourinary tuberculosis. Radiological investigations performed due to asymptomatic microscopic haematuria revealed three contrast-enhancing polyps within the neobladder. The patient had enterocystoprostatectomy and histopathological examination of the neobladder revealed mucinous adenocarcinoma in all three polyps, together with a prostatic adenocarcinoma Gleason 7 (3+4). After adjuvant chemotherapy and 1 year of follow-up, he had no sign of clinical or radiological recurrence. T

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in children: report of two cases and review of the literature.

In this article, we report two new cases of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in children and review the literature over the past twenty years. This series of 70 cases demonstrates that the clinical pictures observed in children are similar to those of adults. Rectal prolapse or extrusion of polyps can be the clue to the diagnosis at an early age, even in the absence of pigmentation, which can appear later. Gastroduodenal polyps were strikingly frequent in the less than or equal to 16-yr-old group (62%) a circumstance that can create operative difficulties. Five out of the 70 patients (7.14%) had tumors

Gentle Giant? Giant Gastric Solitary Peutz-Jeghers Polyp.

Solitary hamartomatous polyps with identical pathological features of the typical hamartomas of the Peutz-Jegher syndrome are extremely rare. These solitary lesions lack the associated intestinal polyposis, classic mucocutaneous pigmentation, and family history typifying the Peutz-Jegher syndrome. We describe the case of a 31-year-old woman with a giant solitary gastric hamartoma endoscopically diagnosed and laparoscopically resected.

[Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (mucocutaneous melanosis associated with gastrointestinal polyposis). Presentation of 5 cases presenting in the same family].

Five brothers suffering from Peutz-Jeghers syndrome with freckles in the skin of the face and mucous membrane of the oral cavity, and intestinal polyps are reported. These patients have not been traditionally considered of being at risk. The current opinion is that patients with this disorder can develop malignancies in the gastrointestinal tract, and tumors in other organs.

Peroral sustained-release indomethacin treatment for rectal adenomas in familial adenomatous polyposis: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The efficacy of peroral sustained-release indomethacin on rectal adenomas in colectomized patients with familial adenomatous polyposis and its toxicity were evaluated preliminarily. METHODOLOGY: A total of seven colectomized patients with familial adenomatous polyposis were treated with peroral sustained-release indomethacin at the usual clinical doses. The numbers of rectal polyps before and after treatment and approximately one year after cessation of treatment were counted using a flexible colonoscope and compared. RESULTS: After treatment, reductions of rectal polyp size

[The syndrome of juvenile polyposis].

Juvenile polyposis (JP) was first distinguished from other gastrointestinal polyposis syndromes in 1964. Since then, some 272 cases of this entity have been reported in the literature. The underlying polyps found in JP are of the hamartomatous type, but it is known that juvenile polyps may contain adenomatous tissue, or may be accompanied by adenomas. For the most part, juvenile polyps are found in the colon, but may also develop in the stomach, duodenum, jejunum or ileum. In 20 to 50% of the cases, juvenile polyposis occurs as a familial condition. Extra-intestinal anomalies are found in appr
