Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the iris and ciliary body is extremely rare. We present a case which was misdiagnosed as granulomatous uveitis with neovascular glaucoma, and underwent a trabeculectomy with mitomycin-c along with iris biopsy. The post-operative period showed early bleb failure and catastrophic growth of the suspected mass. Histopathological examination revealed a diagnosis iris plasmacytoma. We present the case of a 56-year-old man who developed a neoplasm of epithelioid histology in his anophthalmic left orbit 21 years after he underwent enucleation for a spindle cell iris melanoma. The recurrent tumour was managed by orbital exenteration. Neither further recurrence nor metastasis was diagnosed over a 5-year follow-up period. This case, along with five other similar cases in the literature,1-3 emphasises the importance of long-term follow-up after treatment of iris melanoma.

PURPOSE: To determine the long-term effects of ruthenium-106 plaque radiation therapy for iris and iridociliary melanomas in terms of tumour regression and complications.
METHODS: Between 1 November 1997 and 31 December 2007, 36 patients with an iris or iridociliary melanoma were treated with Ruthenium-106 (Ru-106) ophthalmic plaque radiation therapy. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that Artisan iris claw lens insertion is beneficial in acquired aphakia, matching or exceeding pre-operative BCVA in the overwhelming majority of the cases. In addition, this series did not identify any post-operative problems with uveitis, glaucoma, or hyphaema.
