BACKGROUND: Uveal melanomas can develop in the choroid, ciliary body and iris. In choroidal and ciliary body melanomas, specific chromosomal changes correlate with metastatic disease. Iris melanomas have a better prognosis than choroidal melanomas, and it would be interesting to know if they share chromosomal changes. In addition, iris melanomas might harbour UV-induced mutations of tumour suppressor genes, such as PTEN and CDKN2A.

AIMS: To develop a minimally invasive, maximally effective method to biopsy anterior segment tumours.
METHODS: A 25 gauge aspiration cutter (vitrector) was used to biopsy anterior segment tumours. The probe was introduced under sodium hyaluronate 1% and through a 1 mm incision. Aspiration (600 mm Hg) cutting (300 cpm) was performed to obtain specimens for cytology and histopathology.

Indocyanine green (ICG)-enhanced laser therapy was evaluated for the treatment of experimental intraocular melanoma. Immediately after an intravenous injection of ICG, a 790-nm chromophore, 810-nm semiconductor diode laser was used to irradiate Greene hamster melanomas that had been implanted in the iris of rabbits. ICG-enhanced laser treatment of melanoma (14 eyes) was compared with treatment by laser alone (4 eyes), ICG alone (1 eye), and no treatment (2 eyes). A gene dosage effect for catalase (CAT) was investigated in three individuals : one with 11p13 deletion, aniridia, ambiguous genitalla, and gonadoblastoma ; one trisomic for 11p with the exception of 11p13; and one trisomic for 11p13. A 54-year-old woman who presented with photopsia was found to have elevated intraocular pressure in both eyes and optic disc cupping in the right eye. Angle infiltration was noted on gonioscopy. She was previously been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. To evaluate the outcome of eyes with a confirmed iridociliary epithelial tumour (ICET) following biopsy. Forty-two specimens were selected from the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin database, including 11 globes enucleated following ICET biopsy and 31 iridociliary biopsies with a confirmed ICET. Over a one year period, the multidisciplinary consultation of the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Hospital for neurofibromatosis examined 26 children. Twenty-two children underwent an ophthalmological examination (21 NF1, 1 NF2). Lisch nodule was the most frequent symptom (12 cases) and corneal nerves were visible in 3 cases. BACKGROUND/AIMS: Iris melanoma differs from posterior uveal melanoma in clinical behaviour and location. Situated anteriorly, it is directly exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), unlike posterior melanomas shielded by the lens. PURPOSE: Diffuse anterior retinoblastoma is an exquisitely rare variant of retinoblastoma in which the tumor resides in the anterior segment of the eye, without apparent retinal involvement. Previously published cases have been managed with enucleation. We describe globe salvage and visual preservation in 3 consecutive cases using chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

A transcleral inoculation of 15x10(6) melanocytes of the B16-F10 and G-361 cell lines was carried out in the anterior chamber of one eye in New Zealand white rabbits. Tumor growth occurred in 24 eyes (77%) of the B16-F10 group and in 22 (73%) of the G-361 group.
