The influence of the source of dietary Fe (ferric citrate alone or mixed with bovine blood at a proportion of 1:1 (v/v)) on the digestive utilization of Fe, P, Ca and Mg, and on haemoglobin regeneration efficiency (HRE) was investigated in control and Fe-deficient rats. Diet A contained (by analysis) 43.5 mg Fe/kg diet (as ferric citrate), and diet B contained 44.3 mg Fe/kg diet (ferric citrate-bovine blood). In Fe-deficient rats fed on diet A or B the apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of Fe increased by 42.3 and 45.7% respectively. The ADC of Ca and Mg decreased significantly in Fe-def

The authors used the 57 Co urinary excretion test to assess the intestinal absorption of iron in anemia associated with hypoferrinemia and in iron overload states. Among the anemia associated with hypoferrinemia, a high elimination of 57 Co had been found in all patients (15) with post-haemorrhagic iron deficiency anemia. Conversely, this elimination was very low in all 10 patients with anemia due to chronic inflammatory diseases. Moreover the test detected few iron deficiency anemia due to a decreased intestinal absorption of iron. In the iron overload states, the test had been performed in 2

A cobalt excretion test was performed in 50 patients with various, mainly hematologic, disorders and was found to be an accurate and easily obtainable index of iron absorption. The test was found to be of very limited value in predicting iron stores. The cobalt excretion test may have some usefulness as a simple, apparently safe, noninvasive test for identification of persons with iron depletion resulting from uncomplicated blood loss. However, in more complex circumstances, it fails to differentiate iron deficiency anemia from anemia due to other causes.

During pregnancy, iron supplementation is commonly recommended once daily, partly because hepatic hepcidin secretion following iron intake suppresses subsequent iron absorption. However, the optimal timing of iron administration during maternal iron deficiency remains unknown. We established a pregnant mouse model of iron deficiency and compared the effects of iron (FeSO4, 1 mg/kg) supplementation at the beginning (ZT12) and end (ZT0) of the daily active phase of pregnant mice on maternal, placental, and fetal outcomes. Supplementation at ZT12 significantly enhanced placental iron transport-re

Iron dextran complex is commonly used to treat iron deficiency anemia (IDA). In this work, dextran was degraded and oxidized by UV/H2O2 treatment, and the product Dex-90 was chelated with FeCl3 to prepare the iron dextran complex (Dex-90-Fe). Results showed that UV/H2O2 treatment could significantly decrease the molecular weight of dextran and increase its carboxyl content, making it easier to chelate with iron (III). Moreover, Dex-90-Fe had a high iron content (30.77 % ± 0.87 %) and good thermal stability, which might be formed by Dex-90 with iron (III) via FeO bond. Furthermore, the therapeu

BACKGROUND: Anaemia and iron deficiency are a global healthcare burden affecting almost 25% of the population. Many anaemia cases are caused by depletion of iron stores which can be treated by oral iron supplementation. However, anaemia may also result from functional iron deficiency, where chronic inflammation prevents utilisation of stored iron. Anaemia and iron deficiency are rarely profiled in general populations; however, they can have significant healthcare implications.
METHODS: Data from n = 33,029 serum samples were retrospectively analysed from individuals undertaking private health

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a nutritional metabolic condition that effects infants, children, even adults, both men and women. Individuals with IDA have inadequate iron intake or impaired absorption of iron. The main cause of IDA is the low bioavailability of iron from conventional means, diet and supplementation, even if present in an ambient amount. The major objective of this study was to increase the bioavailability of iron using green technology. For this purpose, iron oxide nanoparticles were fabricated using iron-rich spinach leaves extract. The characterization of the particles was

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Iron deficiency is common in patients with heart failure, affecting up to half of ambulatory patients and an even greater percentage of patients admitted for acute decompensation. Iron deficiency in this population is also associated with poor outcomes, including worse quality of life in addition to increased hospitalizations for heart failure and mortality. Evidence suggests that patients with iron deficiency in heart failure may benefit from repletion with IV iron.
RECENT FINDINGS: In this review, we outline the etiology and pathophysiology of iron deficiency in heart fai

BACKGROUND: Anemia affects one-fourth of the world's population and is caused mostly by iron deficiency. Iron supplementation is the most essential strategy for preventing iron deficiency anemia. Conventional oral iron salts have many drawbacks such as poor absorption & bioavailability, and poor tolerability resulting in poor clinical outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness and safety of ferrous ascorbate, ferrous fumarate, ferrous bis-glycinate, and Sucrosomial iron in the management of iron deficiency anemia.
METHOD: The study is a retrospective observational clinical study compr

Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is an inherited disorder, characterized by abnormal iron metabolism, resulting in systemic iron overload. The iron deposits in multiple organs including the liver, pancreas, heart, pituitary gland, joint, and skin and causes tissue damages leading to clinical manifestations. On the contrary, celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder associated with genetic and environmental triggers and frequently associated with iron deficiency. Additionally, pregnancy results in a physiological state of increased iron requirement due to volume expansion and fetus growth an

Introduction. Iron deficiency (ID) is the most prevalent nutritional deficiency and the main cause of anemia in infants. There is consensus on daily iron supplementation as a preventive strategy; and weekly iron supplementation has also been shown to be effective, but evidence in infants is scarce. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of daily versus weekly iron administration for the prevention of ID anemia (IDA) in infants. Population and methods. Randomized, controlled clinical trial. Infants seen at a public health center, without anemia at 3 months of age, were ran

Iron is an essential trace element for plants; however, low bioactive Fe in soil continuously places plants in an Fe-deficient environment, triggering oxidative damage. To cope with this, plants make a series of alterations to increase Fe acquisition; however, this regulatory network needs further investigation. In this study, we found notably decreased indoleacetic acid (IAA) content in chlorotic pear (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd.) leaves caused by Fe deficiency. Furthermore, IAA treatment slightly induced regreening by increasing chlorophyll synthesis and Fe2+ accumulation. At that point, we i

The yellowing of leaves due to iron deficiency is a prevalent issue in peach production. Although the capacity of exogenous melatonin (MT) to promote iron uptake in peach plants has been demonstrated, its underlying mechanism remains ambiguous. This investigation was carried out to further study the effects of exogenous MT on the iron absorption and transport mechanisms of peach (Prunus persica) plants under iron-deficient conditions through transcriptome sequencing. Under both iron-deficient and iron-supplied conditions, MT increased the content of photosynthetic pigments in peach leaves and
