Isolated pancreatic islets were implanted intraportally into normoglycemic or alloxan-induced diabetic C57BL/6 mice. Each animal was grafted with 200-250 syngeneic islets. Four, 8, 14, or 56 days after the transplantation, 2 to 3 x 10(5) microspheres (10 micron diam) were injected into either the portal vein or the abdominal aorta of anesthetized animals. Isolated granulomatous noncaseating pancreatitis is a rare condition exceptionally described in human population. We demonstrate a case of the a 71-years-old female patient suffering from recent diabetes mellitus, generalized atherosclerosis and hypertension who died due to pulmonary embolism and terminal bronchopneumonia. A 63-year-old woman with localized lipomatosis in the pancreatic head is reported. She was diagnosed to have a lipoma by clinical data including CT scanning. Histopathological examination of the extirpated mass revealed that the lesion was mostly composed of mature fatty tissue without any lobulation or encapsulation by connective tissue, there was a small amount of scattered pancreatic parenchyma at the peripheral and deeper parts of the mass. No Langerhans' islets were detected. Based on these findings, the lesion was diagnosed as localized lipomatosis in the pancreatic head.

Numerous blood group antigens are present in different human tissues where they appear as immunological markers of certain structures. The Pr antigen is the only antigen present in the islet of Langerhans. The A, B, H and Lewis antigens are present in the centro acinar cells and the Pr and Lewis antigens are found on the membrane of the pancreatic ducts. A, B, H and Pk antigens are expressed in the capillaries. These kinds of studies could be important for the transplantation of the endocrine pancreas.

Consequently, maintenance of a steady viable islet cell mass is very difficult. We have used cell or tissue-specific promoters to express lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) proteins in selected cells in independent lines of transgenic mice. Deposition of amyloid is the most constantly present alteration in the islets of Langerhans in type 2 diabetes mellitus and is also quite common in insulin-producing tumors of the pancreas and it is very likely that these two amyloids are identical. We have isolated amyloid fibrils from an insulin-secreting human tumour and purified the fibrillar protein. N-terminal amino acid sequence of the protein is unique and does not resemble insulin or its precursors. Instead it has about 50% homology with the neuropeptide CGRP (calcitonin gene related peptide).
