Women with mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are at increased risk for the development not only of breast, but of ovarian cancer. We studied prion proteins (PrP) in skin and brains of Libyan Jews carrying the E200K mutation who died of familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Unexpectedly, studies with brain showed that PrP molecules encoded both by the wild-type (wt) and mutant alleles exhibit altered properties characteristic of the prion protein associated with prion diseases (PrPSc). We screened 16 cases of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and 28 healthy control subjects to detect possible polymorphisms in their prion protein gene (PRNP). Liver cirrhosis (LC) is a common disease with varied primary causes and ethnic disparities. Clinical characteristics and outcomes of Arab Bedouin (AB) and Jewish patients with LC were retrospective collected and compared. We included 1048 patients, 95 (9%) Arab Bedouin and 953 (91%) Jewish patients. The incidence of cirrhosis was much lower among AB. Child sexual abuse is present in all strata of Israeli society. However, there is scant research on the emotional experiences of non-abusing mothers after disclosure. Based on the findings of substantial research, Western professionals today perceive corporal punishment as a threat to child well-being. They also view it as a violation of children's rights. Nonetheless, many minority groups in Western societies still consider it to be a legitimate child-rearing practice. In response to this gap, this article presents qualitative findings from an exploratory context-informed study of Ultra-Orthodox Jewish fathers in Israel, regarding their perceptions and ascribed meanings of corporal punishment.
