An organocatalytic enantioselective vinylogous aldol/lactonization cascade reaction between β,γ-unsaturated amides and α,β-unsaturated trifluoromethyl ketones has been developed. With a (R,R)-cyclohexanediamine-based tertiary amine-thiourea catalyst, optically active trifluoromethyl dihydropyranones have been constructed in moderate to excellent yields (up to 99%) with excellent enantioselectivities (98 → 99.5% ee). Quorum sensing (QS) is a process by which bacteria sense their population density and regulate behavior accordingly. QS not only regulates bacterial virulence but also directly influences host cells. BACKGROUND: Dirofilaria immitis causes dirofilariosis, a potentially fatal condition in canids. Dirofilaria infections can be prevented with a macrocyclic lactone (ML) prophylactic regimen. However, some D. immitis isolates have become resistant to MLs. Genetic changes on the P-glycoprotein 11 gene, encoding an ABCB transporter, have been linked to the ML-resistant phenotypes and have been proposed as markers of drug resistance. However, nothing is known about the expression and the localization of this transporter in D. immitis, despite its strong link to ML-resistant phenotypes.

The anti-cancer effect of dehydrocostus lactone (DHL) derived from Saussurea costus (Falc.) Lipech against laryngeal carcinoma was assessed. The cytotoxic activity of DHL against laryngeal carcinoma is still obscure. Therefore, our study investigated the role of DHL in the growth inhibition of laryngeal carcinoma in vitro and in vivo, and the molecular mechanism of DHL-induced apoptosis in cancer cells of the larynx. The results showed that DHL inhibits the viability, migration and proliferation of Hep-2 and TU212 cells with little toxic effects on human normal larynx epithelial HBE cell line.

This study evaluates the anticancer effects of dehydrocostus lactone, a plant-derived sesquiterpene lactone, on human chronic myeloid leukemia cells. Dehydrocostus lactone significantly inhibits cell proliferation by inducing cells to undergo cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and differentiation.
