The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using Toxocara canis larva-specific antigens was used to confirm a presumptive clinical diagnosis of visceral larva migrans in patients whose serum specimens were submitted to the Center for Disease Control. The clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with diagnostic ELISA titres (greater than or equal to log2 5) were compared with patients who had less or no detectable antibody. The typical patient with serologically confirmed toxocaral visceral larva migrans was about five years of age and resided in the southern half of the USA.…

The occurrence of visceral larva migrans due to Ascaris suum (A. suum) and Toxocara canis (T. canis) has occasionally been reported in Japan, although parenchymatous involvement of the CNS is extremely rare in A. suum/T. canis visceral larvae migrans. Recently we experienced 7 cases with myelitis caused by visceral larva migrans due to A. suum/T. canis (parasite myelitis). The characteristics of this myelitis are: (1) sensory disturbances (Lhermitte's sign, paresthesia, and hypesthesia) are predominant symptoms, while severe motor weakness is rare, (2) spinal cord lesions on T2-weighted MRI sh…

PURPOSE: This study aimed to characterize co-occurrence patterns, statistical associations, and phenotypic clusters of clinical manifestatio … clinical phenotypes.
RESULTS: Four principal clusters were identified: subclinical disease, ocular larva migrans, visceral larva migrans, and neurotoxocariasis/multisystemic disease. The ocular larva migrans and visceral larva migrans clusters were largely distinct, whereas ocular features were frequently co-reported in the neurotoxocariasis/multisystemic clus …

The present situation of parasitic zoonoses in Japan is reviewed. A total of 51 species, i.e., 6 species of protozoan parasites, 14 species of trematode parasites, 11 species of cestode parasites, 18 species of nematode parasites and 2 species of acanthocephalan parasites are potential zoonotic parasites. Most (11 species) of the zoonotic nematodes provoke larva migrans. Habitats of zoonotic parasites vary greatly depending upon individual species. Some parasites cause heterotopic parasitism (e.g., Paragonimus westermani) and metastasis (Entamoeba histolytica). In larva migrans, parasites migr…

In 6 differnet animal assays in the laboratory, thiabendazole had clear anti-inflammatory effect, though it was less potent than aspirin in all assays. These findings add support to clinical suggestions that the drug may have anti-inflammatory properties in man. Such properties may contribute to the clinical response observed following the use of thiabendazole in cases of trichinosis, cutaneous larva migrans, visceral larva migrans, dracunculosis and scabies. In parasitic infections in which corticosteroids are commonly used in clinical management, notably trichinosis, the fact that thiabendaz…

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic hepatic pseudotumors (EHP) are known complications of visceral larva migrans (VLM). By radiologic studies, EHP can be suspicious for primary or metastatic hepatic neoplasia. Diagnosis of an EHP by fine needle aspiration (FNA) led to the diagnosis of Toxocara VLM in a patient with suspected hepatic neoplasia.
CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old Cambodian man had hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis with grade III portal fibrosis diagnosed in 2003. He had had negative routine alpha-fetoprotein and radiologic screening for hepatic neoplasia until 2006 when abdominal computed tomogra…

This report documents cerebral involvement by Toxocara in a child who died in a fire. Although visceral larval migrans caused by Toxocara canis is relatively common, especially in the southern states, cerebral involvement rarely has been documented histologically. Foci of inflammation, consistent with visceral larva migrans, were present in the liver.

An unusual case of life-threatening visceral larva migrans (toxocariasis) is reported herein. The patient was admitted with acute dyspnea and bilateral pleural effusion; rapidly pericardial tamponade developed. Blood and body fluid eosinophilia were elevated. Extensive investigations revealed no malignant process or vasculitis, but Toxocara infection was confirmed by rising specific antibody titers. The high seroprevalence of Toxocara antibodies, particularly in children, suggests that a diagnosis of visceral larva migrans should be considered before a diagnosis of systemic hypereosinophilic s…

Epidermal parasitic skin diseases are a family of parasitic diseases which occur globally or are frequent in special settings. Epidermal parasitic skin diseases occur in travelers and migrants, although epidemiology and/or clinical manifestations differ between these groups. The objective of this study is to summarize the existing knowledge concerning tungiasis, hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans, scabies, pediculosis capitis and pediculosis corporis in the context of travel and migration, and to identify risk factors for infection. The PUBMED database was searched using the terms tungia…

Baylisascaris procyonis, the raccoon roundworm, infects a wide range of vertebrate animals, including humans, in which it causes a particularly severe type of larva migrans. It is an important cause of severe neurologic disease (neural larva migrans [NLM]) but also causes ocular disease (OLM; diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis [DUSN]), visceral larva migrans (VLM), and covert/asymptomatic infections. B. procyonis is common and widespread in raccoons, and there is increasing recognition of human disease, making a clinical consideration of baylisascariasis important. This review provides…

The contaminated soil with mammal feces is an important factor of risk to infection with zoonotic diseases. Amongst these zoonoses are visceral larva migrans and cutaneous larva migrans caused by Toxocara spp. and Ancylostoma spp., respectively. The aim of this study was to assess the environmental contamination by Toxocara spp. eggs and hookworms (Ancylostoma spp.) in public parks and squares in the city of Guarulhos, a metropolitan area of São Paulo, São Paulo State, Brazil. Soil samples were collected, between September and December 2010, and examined using the centrifugal flotation techniq…

Toxocariasis or visceral larva migrans is a parasitosis due to the migration in the human organism of animal ascarid larvae. Its importance is under-estimated and the reported tunisian cases are rare. We report nine cases of toxocariasis, noted between January of 2000 to March of 2002, in the laboratory of parasitology-mycology in La Rabta Hospital. They were six children and three adults. The clinical forms are varied: ophthalmologic form (5 cases), general syndrome (1 case), oedema (1 case) and hypereosinophilia (2 cases), and confirmed serologically by the presence of anti Toxocara canis an…

Toxocara canis is a dog helminth which causes visceral larva migrans (VLM) when infecting humans as a larva. The infection is demonstrated by detecting IgG antibodies against excretory-secretory larval antigens (ESLA) in serum by ELISA. The production of ESLA involves the collection of adult worms from dog puppy stools, the separation of eggs from dissected uteri, and the in vitro growing of egg-derived larvae, following the time-consuming and laborious protocol described by De Savigny [De Savigny, D.H., 1975. In vitro maintenance of T. canis larvae and a simple method for the production of To…

Strongyloides stercoralis causes a distinctive form of cutaneous larva migrans that is recognized as larva currens. The rapid rate of intracutaneous migration, the cutaneous localization, the chronicity of recurrence, and the frequency of urticarial reaction justify its presentation as a clinically distinguishable form of creeping eruption. This clinical complex should be identified as a cutaneous sign of systemic disease.

Toxocariasis is the clinical term used to describe human infection with either the dog ascarid Toxocara canis or the feline ascarid Toxocara cati. As with other helminths zoonoses, the infective larvae of these Toxocara species cannot mature into adults in the human host. Instead, the worms wander through organs and tissues, mainly the liver, lungs, myocardium, kidney and central nervous system, in a vain attempt to find that, which they need to mature into adults. The migration of these immature nematode larvae causes local and systemic inflammation, resulting in the "larva migrans" syndrome.…

Among tropical dermatoses, the main indications of ivermectine are tropical parasitoses such as filariasis and cosmopolitan diseases due to ectoparasites such as scabies. The efficacy and tolerance of ivermectine in filariasis (onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, loiasis) have been the topic of numerous articles and reviews. More recent studies showed that ivermectin was also efficient in the therapy of scabies, cutaneous larva migrans and larva currens.

BACKGROUND: Human toxocariasis is primarily a soil-transmitted zoonosis, so children with geophagia are at an increased risk of toxocariasis … eosinophilia, and low-density lesions in the liver at computed tomography, a diagnosis of visceral larva migrans syndrome was made.
CONCLUSION: Visceral larva migrans is usually suspected in a young child with history of geophagia, pets exposure, hepatomegaly, whose complete blood count reveals leukocytosis and marked eosinophilia.

The raccoon roundworm Baylisascaris procyonis (B. procyonis) may infect humans to cause severe or fatal meningoencephalitis, as well as ocular and visceral larva migrans. Young children are at greater risk for cerebral larva migrans with severe meningoencephalitis, and early empiric therapy may improve outcomes. Familiarity with characteristic brain imaging findings may prompt earlier diagnosis, particularly in the setting of CSF eosinophilia. We report a case of a 19-month-old boy who presented with truncal ataxia and was found to have peripheral and CSF eosinophilia. MRI demonstrated symmetr…

In this paper we report the usefulness of polymerase chain reaction technique in the diagnosis of visceral larva migrans in a mouse model. Liver samples obtained from two set of experimentally infected mice (10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000 embryonated Toxocara canis eggs per mouse) along with the eggs of T. canis, T. cati and Ascaris suum were included in this study. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed using Toxocara primers (SB12). The first PCR product electrophoresis revealed very thin positive bands or no bands in liver samples. However, on second PCR a clear-cut bands were observed. N…
