BACKGROUND: Laser energy has become the preferred option to treat urinary stones during ureteroscopy (URS), rigid or flexible (FURS). Tis review aimed to report the outcomes of endocorporeal laser lithotripsy (ELL) during URS, as well as laser settings.
METHODS: A literature review was conducted up to April 2025 with no time limit on PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane databases. A narrative synthesis is presented for clarity.

Local, so-called incurable, recurrences of breast or genital cancers were as therapeutic challenge in the past. The authors undertook a pilot trial of laser treatment in 45 patients, as a palliative measure, in view of the serious psychological and physical problems experienced by these women constantly confronted by the presence of painful, visible and often ulcerated tumor lesions. CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers were used for tumor vaporisation and coagulation, the combined use of these two wavelengths providing the new study concept which emerged from this pilot trial.

Hazard evaluation methods for lasers, with wavelengths greater than 1.4 microns (mostly in the middle infrared), have changed significantly in the current version of the American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers, ANSI Z136.1-1993. A correct evaluation involves comparing the hazard potential based on two evaluation models; one based on individual pulses and the other based on an equivalent continuous-wave exposure. An example of the hazard evaluation method within this spectral region is provided.

A new technique of hyperopic correction similar to radial thermokeratoplasty is presented. A pulsed Holmium:YAG laser was used, emitting a wavelength of 2.06 microns. We demonstrate the capability of a narrow linewidth quantum cascade laser (QCL) to selectively excite a very narrow velocity range of nitric oxide (σ ≤ 7(3) m/s) with a pure ro-vibrational quantum state.
