In this study, we have tested how various identified leech neurons in culture grow on surfaces that they normally contact in situ. Neurons were cultured either on ganglion capsules from which neurons had been removed or on skin. On these substrates, outgrowth patterns were characteristic for each cell type. Retzius cells plated on capsules extended bundles of thick, fasciculated processes with few branching points and in the opposite direction a tangle of fine neurites. Anterior pagoda (AP) neurons plated on capsules extended two single processes in opposite directions but failed to grow on sk

BACKGROUND: Mandibular reconstruction by means of fibula transplants is the standard therapy for severe bone loss after subtotal mandibulect … the arterial vessel of the pedicle, subsequent high dose low-molecular weight heparin therapy, and leeches. After 6 hours postoperatively, images of early flap recovery show first sings of recovery by fading livid skin color.
RESULTS: The application of this technique in a patient with venous thrombosis resulted in the complete recovery of the flap 60 h …

A 46-year-old male sought periodontal care for a swelling on his right mandibular gingiva. An excisional biopsy revealed a well-differentiat … osed low serum levels of protein S. The patient was started on systemic heparin and local medicinal leeches. A week later, systemic warfarin sodium was added and successfully resolved the vascular compromise of the graft. Two years later, the patient is active and lives a full life with occasional adjustments of warfarin sodium. This case represents the f …

Haematophagous organisms are a rich source of salivary anticoagulant polypeptides that exert their activity by blocking the catalytic site and one of two positively charged exosites on the host protease thrombin. Here, we describe a molecular engineering approach to hybridise post-translationally sulfated polypeptides from different blood-feeding organisms to enhance anticoagulant activity. This led to the discovery of a triply sulfated hybrid anticoagulant, XChimera, possessing fragments from flea, leech, and fly salivary polypeptides that exhibits femtomolar inhibitory activity against throm

Hands are anatomically complex and have great social, physical and emotional importance. Hand or digit replantation following traumatic partial or complete amputation is a complex injury for nursing staff to understand and manage. The absence of clear guidance, combined with a lack of consensus in the literature gives rise to ambiguity and insufficient understanding of appropriate and effective management. This article aims to outline nursing care of the patient in the first few days following hand or digit reattachment, particularly focusing on the recognition and management of arterial and v

Annetocin, an oxytocin-related peptide which we isolated from the earthworm Eisenia foetida, induced a series of egg-laying-related behaviors in the earthworms. These stereotyped behaviors consisted of well-defined rotatory movements, characteristic body-shape changes, and mucous secretion from the clitellum. Each of these behaviors is known to be associated with formation of the cocoon in which eggs are deposited. In fact, some of the earthworms injected with annetocin (> 5 nmol) laid eggs. Such egg-laying-related behaviors except for oviposition were also induced by oxytocin, but not by Arg-

The red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus was introduced to the Barents Sea from the North Pacific in the 1960s. A previous study concluded that it may be indirectly responsible for increased transmission of Trypanosoma murmanense to cod Gadus morhua in the southern Barents Sea by promoting an increase in the population of the leech vector Johanssonia arctica. Eleven species of fish, totalling 681 individuals, caught in October 2002 along the coast of Finnmark, were examined for trypanosome infections. The aims were to investigate changes in levels of infection in cod since 1999-2001, and t

Technical limitations with intracellular electrophysiological methods usually restrict recording of postsynaptic potentials only from neuronal soma, a site remote from the actual synapse. The intervening dendritic cable interposed between the actual synapse and the site of recording can significantly filter the synaptic signal. Therefore, investigations of drug effect on synaptic mechanisms, based on postsynaptic recordings obtained at the soma, must be interpreted with care. The potential role of dendritic cable filtering in the atypical pentobarbital depression of a K(+)-dependent inhibitory

Haemogregarina macrochelysi n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Haemogregarinidae) of the alligator snapping turtle, Macrochelys temminckii, is characterized by slender, recurved gamonts 29-35 x 3-4.5 microm, in which the anterior limb comprises 48-54% of the total length. The gamont nucleus, 5-7.5 x 2-5 microm, is situated at approximately midbody of the gamont. Meronts typical of Haemogregarina occupying erythrocytes have 3-8 small, compact nuclei and are 13-17 x 4.5-9 microm. Erythrocytic meronts that contain larger, nearly square or rectangular nuclei become rounded, and then undergo 7 or more nuclear di

The aims of the present study were to analyze the ovary cord structure and oogenesis in Erpobdella johanssoni under light, fluorescent and transmission electron microscopy and to compare the obtained results with other clitellate annelids, especially with other arhynchobdellid leeches. Each of the paired ovaries is composed of the ovary wall (ovisac) and several (7-8) short, cone-shaped ovary cords. The ovary cords are of the "Erpobdella" type, i.e. they are short and polarized and five zones containing germ cells at consecutives stages of their development can be distinguished along their lon…

OBJECTIVE: To give a reference to the safe and standardized production of Whitmania pigra, through the comparative research on residues of heavy metals and pesticide in W. pigra, breeding base soil and breeding water .
METHOD: Residues of heavy metals and pesticide in W. Pigra, soil and water were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometers, atomic fluorescence spectrophotometers and GC-ECD.
RESULT AND CONCLUSION: With the exclusion of Pb residue, the residues of HCH, DDT and other heavy metals in W. pigra, soil and water in breding base met the requirements of the national standards.

Azobenzene photoswitches were recently reported to control the activity of neural cells and heart beat in leeches. Here, we report photocontrol of excitation of cultured cardiomyocytes that have been made light sensitive by using the addition of azobenzene trimethylammonium bromide (AzoTAB). The trans-isomer of AzoTAB reversibly suppresses spontaneous activity and propagation of excitation waves, whereas the cis-isomer has no detectable effect on the electrical properties of cardiomyocytes. Photoisomerization of AzoTAB was achieved by switching the illumination wavelength, λ, from ~440 nm (tra…

A case of a totally amputated ear that was successfully replanted using microvascular anastomosis is reported. This is the sixth such case reported in the literature. This case varies from those of previous reports in that systemic heparinization was not administered and interpositional vein grafts were not used.
