Palliative and end-of-life care for patients with ovarian cancer.

Palliative care improves the quality of life of patients and their families through the prevention and treatment of distressing symptoms while addressing the psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of patient care. Emerging paradigms of delivery promote early involvement in the disease trajectory and specialty approaches to care. Interdisciplinary assessment and shared decision making are important components. Throughout the disease course, aggressive symptom management can improve patients' quality of life and their ability to tolerate and continue treatment. End-of-life care focuses on

Mechanical Circulatory Support: Primer for Consultant Specialists.

Mechanical life support therapies exist in many forms to temporarily replace the function of vital organs. Generally speaking, these tools are supportive therapy to allow for organ recovery but, at times, require transition to long-term mechanical support. This review will examine nonrenal extracorporeal life support for cardiac and pulmonary support as well as other mechanical circulatory support options. This is intended as a general primer and overview to assist nephrologist consultants participating in the care of these critically ill patients who often experience acute renal injury as a r

Palliative oncology and palliative care.

New therapeutic approaches can produce promising results even in severely ill cancer patients. But they also pose new challenges with respect to prognostication, as patients who were once not eligible for treatment, due to age or comorbidities, now are. Palliative oncology constitutes a major part of oncological care, with life prolongation and quality of life as its main goals. Palliative care specialists are experts in symptom control and psychosocial and existential support, and the integration of their expertise early on in patient care can prolong survival. In this article, I discuss the

End-of-life care for homeless patients: "she says she is there to help me in any situation".

Homelessness annually affects an estimated 2.3 million to 3.5 million individuals living in the United States. Homeless people face difficulties in meeting their basic needs. Many have substance abuse problems and mental illness, lack social support, and have no medical insurance. These challenges complicate the homeless patient's ability to engage in end-of-life advanced planning, adhere to medications, and find an adequate site to receive terminal care. Employing a multidisciplinary team to care for homeless patients can help address their needs and improve care. For patients who continue to

Invisible But Essential: A Qualitative Study on the Experiences of Informal Caregivers in Home-based Palliative Care.

Informal caregivers provide essential support to cancer patients from diagnosis through treatment, palliative care, and end-of-life care. While their practical contributions are widely acknowledged, the emotional and psychological experiences of caregivers remain underexplored, particularly in home-based palliative care settings. Understanding these experiences is crucial to improving support and interventions for caregivers. This study explored the emotional and subjective experiences of informal caregivers providing home-based palliative care for family members with cancer, using retrospecti

Professional quality of life of hospital nurses: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Health care systems are struggling to meet the growing demands for nursing care due to a shrinking workforce. The interplay between workforce shortages, professional quality of life, and insufficient support structures threatens not only nurses' well-being but also the quality of care. Addressing these factors is crucial to ensure the resilience of the nursing workforce and the quality of patient care. OBJECTIVE: To examine the levels of the three dimensions of Professional Quality of Life (ProQoL): compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS) am

Measurement and practical aspects of quality of life in breast cancer.

There are many aspects of quality of life which are non-intuitive and need to be studied to get information for the improvement of cancer treatment. There is general agreement that quality of life should be measured as an important end-point in clinical trials, especially when palliative treatment is intended. The present paper summarizes the main aspects of measurement of quality of life as well as the results of quality of life studies concerning breast cancer. Many practical problems in our health care system clearly undermine the quality of life of cancer patients. The Finnish Hospital Lea

Health-related quality of life in children and adolescents with spinal muscular atrophy in the Czech Republic.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy is a rare hereditary neuromuscular disorder (with a prevalence of 1 per 30,000) that greatly debilitates patients and, in most cases, shortens their life expectancy. Although there is no causal therapy, improvements in symptomatic therapy have extended patients' life expectancy and increased their quality of life. Unfortunately, the advancements in care vary from country to country. To improve the care for children with spinal muscular atrophy in the Czech Republic, we created a survey to obtain the baseline information about their quality of life and compar

[Medicinal management of pain and symptoms following the withdrawal of treatment in babies and children].

We present three cases to illustrate the end-of-life care after withdrawal of mechanical ventilation. In a one-year-old girl with meningococcal septic shock, muscle relaxants were continued when mechanical ventilation was withdrawn. In a 10-day-old girl with perinatal asphyxia a high dose of fentanyl was given before mechanical ventilation was withdrawn. A 6-week-old girl in a vegetative state was fighting for breath after detubation. At the request of the parents to end this condition, vecuronium bromide was given. In these three cases death was probably brought forward by a maximum of 12-24

Typology of Family Support in Home Care for Iranian Older People: A Qualitative Study.

The world population is rapidly aging. In older people, age-related biological decline in most body systems causes functional decline, an increase in dependence, and an increased need for support, especially by their family members. The aim of this study was to explore the main aspects of family support for older parents in home care. This qualitative study was conducted using a deductive qualitative content analysis approach. Participants were 21 older parents living in their own homes, as well as four family members of some participants. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews a

To improve survival: an overview of pediatric resuscitation and the updated PALS guidelines.

The updated 2005 American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support guidelines aim to improve overall survival from cardiac arrest. These revised guidelines are result of extensive evaluation of scientific evidence and have become simplified to emphasize quality basic life support (BLS) and effective cardiac compressions. Successfully applied techniques of both basic and advanced life support are crucial in improving neonatal and pediatric resuscitation outcomes. This article reviews the scientific evidence and the updated management and treatment guidelines essential for the health ca
